1 G O L D W I N G R O A D R I D E R S 2018 Chapter PA Q Web Site Hello All, I hope everyone's staying warm the weather is cold again. I just got back from Florida from taking a load down to Fort Lauderdale. Went down and seen my mother for a day it was nice at 70. Seen a lot of bikes out but then I had to come back home to 30 and snow. I'm leaving to go down to Florida March 28th or the 29th we're leaving for a week s worth of vacation. Let's hope the weather gets nice so we all can get our bikes out and do some riding. Please remember we are trying to get a list together to go riding. Bring your opinions and options to my attention. Thank you all for everything. It seems to be all the talk on the news here. So far I have been lucky. I got another ride in a few days ago. I see some things are getting on the calendars of other chapters so please get your suggestion submitted for rides with a meal, have ice cream or visit, so we can get our schedule finished. Stay well. Rita Gillespie AC D

2 PA DISTRICT EDUCATOR: Hello everyone. In the last newsletter, I talked about the data available on the Rider Education website. I also explained how to enter this site so you can review your own information. This month, I would like to explain the difference between Safe Mileage and High Mileage. Safe Mileage begins on the day you join GWRRA. Your safe mileage increases for every mile you ride your motorcycle without having a reportable accident. If you have an accident which is reportable for insurance claim or by law enforcement as an accident, your mileage reverts back to 0 miles. The program awards a pin for every 5,000 miles safely ridden. We have many members with 100,000 miles in the program. High Mileage is just for bragging rights. This is not a GWRRA program. High Mileage indicates the number of miles you have accumulated since you began riding a motorcycle legally. Safe miles bars awarded in 50,000 increments are displayed from a head pin. I must say it again, This is not a GWRRA program. However, we have members in the Pennsylvania District with over 400,000 miles and they are still adding up the miles! In the coming months, I will explain what the Levels Program is, how the program works, and why it is important to all of us as GWRRA members. It is up to you to monitor and update your information for the website, but I am here to help when needed. Please feel free to contact me when you have questions or need other assistance. 3 .Cleveland International Motorcycle Show 2018: Goldwing! The end of January has come, which means the Cleveland International Motorcycle show has hit town. This year's show was far more interesting than most, primarily because the all-new 2018 Goldwing was being shown. I arrived early, to make sure I was at the front of the line, and able to get to the bikes to get some clear pictures before people crowded in. And crowd they did! Honda's entire booth was practically dedicated to the new Goldwing. Their booth, shown here, consisted of a large open area flanked by a stage with a video wall, with three Goldwings shown - two Goldwing Tours (with trunk) and one Goldwing (the bagger version, equivalent to the old F6B). Other Honda bikes were sprinkled around the periphery, but make no mistake - this year as far as Honda was concerned, the show was all about the Goldwing. And this was apparently the case as far as many attendees were concerned as well. The Goldwing was the talk of the show, with consistent crowds around the three bikes all day. Nowhere else in the show did I see the excitement that was being generated by the new Wings. Even the all-new Yamaha Star Venture didn't get even close to the crowds and attention that was paid to the new Wings. My final takeaway: I walked into the show with some preconceptions based on everything I had seen and read about the new bike. Frankly, I was skeptical. I honestly didn't expect to like the new Goldwing a great deal - just too many compromises had been made in too many areas in the name of saving weight. However...I was blown away. I am actually extremely impressed with the new Goldwing. It's obviously technology-packed, but it's not overbearing - it's still a motorcycle first. I definately wouldn't mind one in my garage! There are a few things that really need addressing - the passenger grab rails for one, the utter joke of a helmet lock (especially given the lack of storage space), and some of the menuing firmware. But overall, Honda has done an amazing job on this new bike. Now to see if people will buy it! To read my full review of the new GL1800 Goldwing along with tons of pictures and video of every aspect of the bikes, check out my show review post: 2018 Cleveland Motorcycle Show Report - Pictures! Video! Cleveland International Motorcycle Show 2018: Goldwing!. I was able to spend quite a bit of time examining all three models of the new 2018 Goldwing in detail before the crowds made this impossible. I sat on the bikes, front and back, checked out the storage, tried the controls, worked through all the menus in the dash, examined the new suspension. I took literally hundreds of pictures and several videos, to make sure that I documented everything I could! Once I got home, I sat down and wrote out all of my impressions to go along with the pictures and video, to make sure that I didn't forget anything. After a day of selecting, culling and editing pictures, editing video and a few rewrites and edits of my original notes, I posted the end result. SAVE THESE DATES FOR 2018!!!!! 4 Hello Everyone This is our first newsletter as your new Asst. District Directors, and we thought we would share you a little about ourselves. Shirley & I have been married since 1977 (OMG)!!!!, we have 2 children a son Mike and a daughter Nicole, we have 3 grandsons & 1 great grandson 13 months. I started riding motorcycles when I was 15 on a dirt bike. I got my first street legal motorcycle when I was 16 (It was a poor-man s work transportation. Fast forward 29 years On our 25 th Wedding Anniversary we went to Maui, while walking the beach, we came across a shop renting all kinds of vehicles and saw a Harley soft tail. Jokingly, I said we should rent it and ride the island, of course, she said yes. I was shocked, as she had never road with me before. But I wasn t going to let this opportunity pass by. We rode all day, including to the top of the islands Volcano, Haleakala, with no helmet, and in flipflops. I know, I Know, we know better now and ride ATGATT We both had a blast and new then we were bitten by the Biker Not long after we returned home we bought our first bike a Goldwing, it wasn t long after we had our Black 2002 GL1800, which we re still riding today with more than 126,000 miles on it. Shirley and I both participate in the levels program, she is a Master Level IV and I m a Senior Master Level IV. We have held many positions in GWRRA from Chapter Couple of the Year to Chapter Directors, and many others at the District, Region, and the National level as the Asst. Directors of the Membership Enhancement for the Chapter of the Year Programs. I m a Senior University Trainer, and ITCP certified Instructor, currently the Chapter Treasure, Chapter Web Master, PED coordinator, in addition we re your PA. Asst. Directors, overseeing Chapters A. B. K. V Y. It is February, and as of writing this article, we don t know if the ground hog did or didn t see his shadow. But we know Spring is just around the corner and will be riding soon. So be safe riding and we will see you soon. In closing we want to say Thank You to Harold & Diane Jackson for the opportunity to serve on the District Team, and a heads ups to Chapters A. B. K. V & Y, we will be stopping by to see you soon. Meanwhile if you have a question or need help with anything feel free to give us a call. 5 KEEPING YOUR GOLD WING ON ITS WHEELS One of the biggest adjustments when transitioning to a large motorcycle like a Goldwing is learning how to keep it upright when stopped, starting off, or coming to a stop. I'm sure every Goldwing owner has at one time or another felt that panicking feeling of doom when coming to an uncoordinated stop and realizing that a thousand pounds of motorcyle is intent of laying down to take a nap. When the rider is short of stature, the challenge becomes even greater. Longer legs give you more leverage, as you can position your feet out farther to the side. But long legs are definitely not a requirement. Once our heavy bikes get moving, they feel light and nimble. But coming to a stop, particularly on a slope or off-camber piece of road can be a challenge, and takes practice and smoothness to accomplish reliably and safely. However, there are a few tips of the trade that can get you well along the road towards safe upright stopping. User japajobro purchased his GL1500 a little while back, and despite being six feet tall and in decent physical shape, he's still having a problem keeping the bike upright when at a stop. He posted his frustrations and asked for help. And boy did he get it! This topic received a ton of replies, with suggestions galore - as well as sympathy from riders also experiencing the same problems. Once our heavy bikes get moving, they feel light and nimble. If you're having troubles keeping your bike upright consistently when coming to a stop, check out this very helpful thread: Having I'm always surprised when I see posts from frustrated owners of four-cylinder (GL1000, GL1100, GL1200) Goldwings complaining that their fuel and temperature gauges have stopped working. The problem is almost always a faulty 7 volt regulator - and I would have thought given the thousands of replacement 7 volt regulators that we have sold, along with the countless topics about this problem, that this simple fix would be common knowledge. Apparently not. That said, once in a while I get an from someone that just makes my day, like this one, which I received this weekend: Just thought I'd drop you a line to let you know I installed the 7 volt regulator in my 1982 GL1100 and "hey presto" the fuel and temperature gauges are now working again! I am delighted at this "easy fix" solution, and even happier that I can now monitor my fuel and temperature situation. I d still be running around with dead gauges had I not read your newsletter tip about the faulty regulators. Nothing makes me happier than knowing I've helped someone out like this. If your four-cylinder wing is without fuel and temperature gauges, it's time to make this easy fix: 7 Volt Regulator Newsletter Title Page 5

6 Attention Chapter Directors: "GoldWingers Got Talent" "GoldWingers Got Talent" is the Theme for the talent show at the 2018 PA District Rally this May in Uniontown, PA. It will be part of the Friday night festivities on May 18th. We are excited to be the "Hosts" for this year's show and we are looking forward to helping showcase your special talents. As we learned years ago "Everybody's got a talent"! The act can be one person or multiple people or your whole chapter. The more the merrier!!! As in the past few years this is a non-competitive event which gives everyone the ability to sing, dance, tell jokes, do a skit, play an instrument, or some other special talent. Stupid People Tricks maybe? Rules are simple. Family Oriented, Non-Political, Non-Religious. That is it! A sound system is available if you need music and/or a microphone. There is a small stage that is 8 feet deep by 16 feet long about 24 inches off the floor with one step to get on and off. This is a great opportunity to get your chapter involved in something that is just for fun. Use the rest of this winter to get together and make your chapter a part of the rally. Every chapter that has someone taking part in the show will be entered to win a Dairy Queen gift card to be drawn at the end of the show. The gift card will be awarded to the Chapter. So put on your "thinking caps" and plan what you have to offer to entertain your fellow Gold- Wingers. Let's all work together to make this year's show a true extravaganza. We will be reaching out (bugging you) to hear about your plans to participate. Please us with any questions and also if you are planning on being part of the show. We can be reached at dmhartle@comcast.net or by calling us at Looking forward to a fun filled evening with all of you. Dana and Danise Hartle 2017 PA District Couple of the Year
