G O L D W I N G R O A D R I D E R S M 2019 Chapter PA Q Web Site Chapter Director: Hi everyone, I was really hoping that Phil, the ground hog would have had winter out of the Warren area by Now. I think he is a little slow. I was able to attend the Lakeland Chapter Assistant Chapter Director: Well winter started slow but I think it's time for it to leave I like to see spring and summer get here. One more week and I am going to Florida to enjoy the sunshine. Would of like to take the bike but planning on it next year we're going to take the bike rally and a ride with Chapter Fl1g. Time is going fast and I will be back by the end of the month. Stay warm and will see you soon. Rita Gillespie CD again.. Just a reminder we are going to the Kelly hotel March 17th meeting there at 3:30 p.m. for the St Patrick dinner. I will be in Florida that weekend. ACD Mike Gillespie GL1500 Madstad Windshield Inside this issue: Chapter Director 1 ACD 1 Chapter Couple MEC 2 Ride Schedule 4 Calendars 12/13 For Sale 4 Newsletter Editors: I haven't seen so much online talk about a windshield since the original Tall Tulsa (long out of production). The new Madstad adjustable windshield is available for a multitude of bikes, and the Goldwing is included. With two separate parts, the lower windshield is fixed to the fairing, while the upper part can be moved up and down, and its angle changed to fit the type of riding being done, and the ambient temperature. Several different sizes are available to fit the height of the rider. Happy Easter Rita joined the FL 1 Chapter at the Puddle Jumper Restaurant in February. The family that rides together, stays together!

MEC Corner: I don t know about you but I am more than ready for Spring. The cold weather is okay. The snow is even okay, but this freezing rain has got to go. It is almost March and a Fu day is being planned for Saturday, March 30 for the Couples of the Year from all chapters. This is going to be different this year. Previous years it was an overnight event and great fun was had but with such busy schedules, we are scaling it back to one day. We plan to put all the into the event and we hope that each couple comes away with information and the excitement that they can t wait to go the next step to District Couple. I would like to encourage the chapter Directors to make sure that your COY has the information and that they plan on attending. I know this is a hard time of the year to promote GWRRA because how do we know who rides a motorcycle with this weather? Start getting prepared to get out there and let fellow riders know what a great group we aare and we are just waiting to welcome new members. If your chapter has new members make sure you introduce yourself and let them know that yesterday they were strangers but today they are members of our family. Start getting that bike ready for the first ride, it won t be long. Till next month, remember Spring is just around the corner. Phil said so. Pat Delo PA District MEC Chapter gathering in February.

PA DISTRICT EDUCATOR: As we prepare to start our trips for the 2019 riding season, another thing we need to prepare ourselves for is towing our Trailer. Make sure you go over the trailer, pack the wheel bearings, check the lights, make sure the trailer ball is tight and check the tire pressure. Next you need to hook up the trailer and go to an area where you can practice maneuvering the trailer around and check the breaking distance before you proceed to go out on the road and especially before you start out on a trip. I feel this article will give those of you who pull trailers something to think about. Honey, I can t get all these crafts in the saddlebag and still carry my clothes!!! Does that phrase ring true? Well there is a cure for this, and it isn t to leave her at home!!! Soon after the Gold Wing hit the streets, alternative loading (that s the buzzword for trailers) became quite popular. I am sure that the Gold Wing crowd was not the first to pull a trailer with a motorcycle, but the majority of the motorcycles I see with a trailer are Gold Wings. Back in the early days the fancy color matched streamlined beauties of today did not exist. You made your own from kits available at various retail stores and put a cargo top from Sears on it for protection of your goodies. These trailers had leaf springs for suspension and were very harsh riding for anything delicate. As entrepreneurs looked into the motorcycle trailer business, sophisticated suspensions started cropping up and today there are some very good trailers on the market. I am not going to go into the ones I think are good, bad or otherwise. I am however going to talk about loads and tongue weight. Tongue weight is very important when pulling a trailer. What is tongue weight? It is the weight of the tongue of the trailer puts on the ball/link of the hitch. How much should it be? All the experts say 7 to 12 percent of the total weight of the trailer. Well, how do I know what my trailer weighs? The manufacturer of the trailer supplies that information with the Bill of Sale. When you load the trailer, weigh each bag or item you place in the trailer and add it to the weight of the empty trailer. If the tongue weight is too light, it can push up on the ball when stopping and de-couple from the hitch. If the tongue weight is too heavy, the trailer will put too much down force, on the hitch, unloading weight from the front wheel of the motorcycle, causing longer stopping distances. As we know, 70% of our stopping power is the front brake. Where you place items in the trailer is also important. The heavy seldom-used items go at the bottom and over the wheels and axles. The items used most often and lighter items go to the front of the trailer and behind the low heavy stuff. Some trailers are outfitted with a cooler in the tongue. When you weigh the tongue, make sure you have the cooler loaded before you weigh the complete package. To measure tongue weight, you can use a bathroom scale or a hinging fish scale. Whatever method you use, make sure the trailer tongue is on the same level as your hitch when the bike is off the center stand. If you use a bathroom scale, cut a piece of PVC pipe to the proper length, to hold the tongue, at the proper height. The hanging fish scale can be held at the required height with the bike on the side stand. If you are going to pull a trailer, you need a hitch of some kind. There are many out there and it you read the different message boards, you can really get confused as to who makes the best one. I will not recommend any of them. As far as I am concerned, each of the reputable vendors has a viable product and they are usually covered for liability. However, when you do install a hitch on your motorcycle, purchase a trailer and start traveling, you will probably never leave home without the trailer again. Now that you have the baby loaded and put the tongue on the ball, and the trailer axis is level with the tike axles, you have to hook up the safety chains. Yes, most states require safety chains on ALL trailers. These chains must be strong enough to hold the weight of anyone stepping on them when connected to the bike and trailer. They should be long enough to allow the trailer to turn without binding and short enough so they do not drag on the ground. They must be crossed under the tongue in the event the trailer becomes uncoupled from the ball. The chains will catch the tongue and keep it from gouging into the pavement as well as keep it connected to the bike. A simple way to shorten a chain that may be too long is to twist it a few turns. Remember most insurance companies include the trailer under the bike s liability coverage. If they become separated, the trailer may no longer be covered and the damage it does while it is coming to rest is your responsibility, not the insurance company. When pulling a trailer, you will find your acceleration and stopping are affected. The more the trailer weighs, the more noticeable it becomes. You will have to learn just how much this affects your riding style. The old do-it-yourself models bounced a lot on bumps. The lighter the trailer, the more it will move around on the ruts from the big trucks. You will have to make wider turns and take a longer distance to pass other slower road users. Without going into the specific dynamics of a trailer, you will have to select slower speeds when negotiating curves. Most trailers do not have brakes, so if the trailer and bike get out of alignment when stopping, the trailer will push the back of the bike even more. We hope everyone has a safe 2019 riding season and remember to become part of GWRRA Rider Education Levels program. Ride Safe and Ride Proud Chuck & Evelyn Stone

I wired the jack so that when you plugged a wire into it, the speaker would shut off, and instead the voice would be sent over the wire. I then juryrigged this wire into the intercom system of the bike. It took some trial and error to get it working well with the Honda system without introducing noise into the system. The end result was the ability to hear the spoken instructions from my GPS over my helmet headset. A few years later, I got my GL1500 and built another magic box to do the same thing. In the past, many people had asked me to replicate my GL1100 GPS sound injector. This was tough to do because of the connectors Honda used in the GL1100. However, for the GL1500 and GL1800 it was much easier, so I designed and built it so that it could be sold. In 2011, I sold my first GPS Input device. It immediately received rave reviews and I quickly sold out my first lot. People loved this thing! I started selling them as fast as I could make them. Several motorcycle stores and online retailers started buying them in bulk as well. Since then I have built and sold thousands of GPS Inputs. There are Goldwings all over the world with my GPS Input device inside them. So many people now have them inside their Goldwings that sales pretty much plateaued early last year - it would seem that most people who wanted one in their Goldwing now had one. And then...i received notice last summer that the manufacturer of one of the most critical components inside the GPS Input would be discontinuing the part. In order to keep making the GPS Input, I would have to scrap the existing design and create a new device, redesigning the circuit board and enclosure, not to mention finding a replacement component. I decided that I would purchase as many of the soon-to-be-discontinued components as I could get, and when those parts ran out, I would call it a day. I'm down to about 300 of those components now, and have assembled units also built and ready to go. So...if you have ever thought of purchasing a GPS Input for your GL1500 or GL1800, don't put it off, because they will not be around for all that much longer. You can read more about them and buy one online here: Goldwing GPS Audio Input Device

FROM YOUR ASSISTANT D DIRECTOR: Hi everyone Mike & Shirley here: (Shirley) As I sit here looking at my Facebook page thinking about all the friends we have throughout the states, keeping in touch with friends and family of GWRRA, we don t get to all the events in the winter but with all the pictures from Christmas Party, New Year Eve, CPR First Aid classes, vacations or even Ice Cream stops, you get to see what the other Chapters are doing during the winter, and the fun never stops just because your motorcycle are in hibernation. 7 FROM PA DISTRICT DIRECTOR: Yes, you heard it right, Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow for the first time in years. I wonder is the groundhog aging and need glasses. What does this mean? In six weeks, it will be spring. Don t procrastinate with those things you were going to do this winter since, spring is around the corner. This is a great time to check your Wing; change the oil and filters, get a new battery, check those tires and my favorite install safety chrome. When spring arrives, we will be ready to get on our Wings and ride. The Pennsylvania District Raffle drawing was in February. Hopefully, you or someone you know is very happy since they had a winning ticket. There will be a drawing at the PA District Rally to distribute the money for the unsold ticket numbers drawn on the Pennsylvania evening Pick 4. Thank you again for selling the tickets and thank you to those that purchased the tickets. Harold and Diane Jackson Your PA District Directors On my 1500 I had rattling everywhere..it is over 30 years old.. On mine and another fellow with a 1800, I opened the trunk lid and carefully inspected the "lip" where they overlap..it was easy to spot every place where the 2 plastic parts were rubbing together..out comes the magic.. A strip of fuzzy Velcro..cut to twice the wear area...fixed to the inside of the lid..nothing hanging out..no more rattle. So I went back over my bike...all the covers that could rattle or squeak..the saddle bags, side covers, wheel covers..etc..lo and behold I found wear spots on all of them...more hidden Velcro.. All I hear now is wind and tire noise.
