3 Sand on the Railway Sand used in low adhesion conditions to improve traction & braking Dispensed from the train, directed into the wheel/rail interface 3

4 Sand on the Railway Original standard: GMRT2461 Issue 1 (August 2001) discharge sand during full service and emergency brake applications when the presence of low adhesion is automatically detected sand shall be delivered by the leading vehicle only. forward of the third axle sand deposition rate such that the rear two axles do not come to rest on sand laid at rate of 7.5 grams/metre or greater A recognised method laying rate not exceeding 2kg/minute 10mph cut-off Current standard: GMRT2461 Issue 2 (June 2016) there are a minimum of six wheelsets between active sanders sand is discharged during service brake demand of 6%g and higher (equivalent to step 2 on typical disc braked multiple units 4

5 T1107 Project Objectives & Inputs The project objective is Determine the benefits of variablerate and distributed sanding, that could be achieved under low adhesion conditions, and Encourage the GB rail industry to move towards variable rate and distributed sanding as a mitigation for low adhesion railhead conditions 5

7 Train Modifications: Sanding Equipment (1) Sanders at axles 3, 7, 11 & 19 = Existing Sander (modified) = New Sander =Unused sander (wrong direction) Direction of travel Existing sandboxes retained and two new sand boxes added at axles 7 & 11 All existing (single rate) sand valves replaced with variable rate sand valves 7

15 Challenges (1) Achieving Consistent Low Adhesion Condition Aim: sander is the only variable in the experiment; isolate others Environmental conditions proved to be the biggest variable Standardised tape conditioning process & developed analysis methodology 15

20 Our Current Position Completed 225 Tests over 25 site days 147 Sanded and 78 Unsanded Stopping Distances range from 342m to >3400m (calculated) Tests include: 2kg/min Fixed rate Sanding 8-Car & 4-car Sanded Axles 3, 3+7, 3+11, 3+19, and Variable Rate Sanding (4kg/min reducing to 0.6kg/min from 20mph) 4-Car Sanded Axles 3, 3+7 and
