2 Battlefield Wings Jan 2004 Chapter Director News Page 2 Jim & Bev Travis As most of you should now know, Dave and Sharron have stepped down as directors of Chapter E and Beverly and I are taking over as Chapter Directors, effective December 13 th. It is definitely an awesome task, to follow in the footsteps of Dave and Sharron. Bev and I can only hope to have the success and continue with the great work that they have started. Chapter E has continued to grow and prosper over the years, due mainly to the hard work and support of its members. With your continued support, Bev and I hope to continue with this progress. On the brighter side, how could we go wrong, with Santa Claus as our boss? About the New CD s Jim has been riding motorcycles, on and off since His first motorcycle, in 1968, was an old 125 Honda with a blown head gasket and a variety of missing parts. In the early 1970s, when the Navy decided that there needed to be more emphasis on motorcycle safety, Jim became one of the first motor cycle safety instructors in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area of Virginia. He attended the first motor cycle safety instructor s course, conducted at the U.S. Naval Air Station, Norfolk, VA. Jim was a charter member of the Motor Cycle Safety Drill Team, called the Golden Eagles, and sponsored by the U.S. Naval Air Station Oceana, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. At about this time Jim bought Beverly her first motorcycle, a CB 125 Honda. When she passed the test for her motorcycle endorsement, she created quite a stir when it was discovered that she didn t have an automobile driver s license to endorse. However they did finally issue her a motorcycle license. Jim and Beverly met some of the Gold Wing riders from Chapter E, Fredericksburg and even though we were riding a Harley Davidson we were welcomed and made to feel like one of the family. We were invited to accompany them to a GWRRA poker run, in Richmond, on the way, a rear tire blew out on our 1989 Harley Davidson, FLHTC. After having it towed to the Harley Davidson dealer in Richmond, where Jim sold the Harley. A week later, in September of 1995, Jim picked up a new 1996 Honda Gold Wing and applied for a membership in the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. We attended our first meeting that month and joined in on the other Chapter E activities. We enjoyed the poker runs, picnics, fundraisers and our first Rally-In-The-Valley. In 1996, Jim s job required him to move to Minneapolis, Minnesota, so he went from Region N, Chapter E to Region E Chapter N. At the time, the move was thought to be only temporary, so Beverly stayed behind in King George. Jim managed to arrange his vacations and travel schedules so that he was able to attend all but one of the Virginia District Rallies. In 1997, Jim accepted the position as Assistant Chapter Director of Chapter N in Minnesota. He served in this position until he moved back to King George, Virginia in Bev and Jim were selected to represent Chapter E as there 2002 Couple of the Year. In 2003 Jim accepted the position as Assistant Chapter Director of Chapter E. Jim has attained Level IV (Master No. 4567) in the Rider Education Program. Beverly is currently at Level III in the Rider Education Program.
3 Page 3 Chapter Educator Gordon Combs PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT: Studies show that the head, arms and legs are most often injured in a crash. Protective clothing and equipment serve a three-fold purpose for motorcyclists: comfort and protection from the elements; some measure of injury protection; and through use of color or reflective material, a means for other motorists to see the motorcyclist. Helmet: This is the most important piece of equipment. Safety helmets save lives by reducing the extent of head injuries in the event of a crash. Many good helmets are available. Make sure it fits comfortably and snugly, and is fastened for the ride. In choosing a helmet, look for the DOT label on the helmet. The DOT label on helmets constitutes the manufacturer's certification that the helmet conforms to the federal standard. In many states, use of a helmet is required by law. Passengers should also wear a helmet. Gloves: Durable gloves are recommended. They should be of the non-slip type to permit a firm grip on the controls. Leather gloves are excellent, as are special fabric gloves with leather palms and grip strips on the fingers. Gauntlet-type gloves keep air out of the rider's sleeves. Appropriate gloves are available for all types of weather. Footwear: Proper footwear affords protection for the feet, ankles, and lower parts of the legs. Leather boots are best. Durable athletic shoes that cover the ankles are a good second choice. Sandals, sneakers, and similar footwear should not be used since they provide little protection from abrasion or a crushing impact. Avoid dangling laces that can get in the way. Note: Upper body clothing should be brightly colored. Some riders wear lightweight reflective orange or yellow vests over their jackets. Retro-reflective material used on clothing, helmet, and the motorcycle helps to make the rider visible to other motorists, especially at night. A high percentage of car-vehicle crashes occur because the driver of the other vehicle "failed to see the rider in time to avoid the crash." This article was copied from the Rider Education Newsletter, Dec. 2001
4 Page Chapter Couple Ray Hitt & Kathy O'Neal It s the beginning of a new year and another year as COY. Already we have been busy going to Christmas parties and just trying to survive all the hustle and bustle of the season. We attended our own Chapter E s Christmas party which was a great success as always. Dave and Sharron officially stepped down and turned the reigns over to Jim and Bev. Thanks to Santa and Mrs. Claus for adding us to their busy schedule of stops during the holidays. It s hard to believe that the year is almost over. So much has happened in the world. Ray and I again plan to attend several activities and functions and represent Chapter E wherever we go. We just want everyone to listen to us, and see how much fun we have as COY. We want everyone to think about accepting the position if asked for next year. The position is what you make it as much or as little as you wish. The main thing is to have fun and just enjoy yourselves. Till next year our endless ride continues into 2004!!!! AROUND GWRRA Region N News WING DING 2004 SCHEDULED FOR GRAPEVINE TEXAS - It has just been announced that Wing Ding 2004, will be held at the "Gaylord Opryland Texas" in Grapevine, TX, just outside of Dallas/Ft. She recently had back surgery (twice) and was unable to attend the Christmas party. Her husband Ron, is happy to report that she is now home recovering. He extends his thanks to all the prayers and well wishes that they received. The Jester is Back Two vultures board an airplane, each carrying two dead raccoons. The stewardess looks at them and says, "I'm sorry, gentlemen, only one carrion allowed per passenger." A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. "But why?" they asked, as they moved off. Because," he said, "I can't stand chess-nuts boasting in an open foyer." A three-legged dog walks into a saloon in the Old West. He slides up to the bar and announces: "I'm looking for the man who shot my paw." And finally, there was the person who sent ten different puns to his friends, with the hope that at least one of the puns would make them laugh. No pun in ten did.
