Harvest times of 0.4 to 0.6 ha/hr have been used here to estimate the potential harvest time for each estuary. 72

3 Rationalization The Mill and Southwest River estuaries are the most desirable locations for harvest based on the results of the matrix. Annual anoxia is well documented in each estuary. Harvest of these two estuaries will be used to determine what degree of effort is required to eliminate anoxia (a single or multiple events). o o It is suggested that the Southwest River be the site chosen for the single harvest trial. The Southwest River is large overall. More time will be required to sail the harvester back and forth to the shoreline access site for off loading the harvester creating inefficiencies in harvest time within a limited budget.. There may also be more sea lettuce in other parts of the river that are in deeper water and more difficult to harvest. Harvest of the upper reaches of the Southwest should have an influence on anoxic events in the same area of the river. Anoxic events downstream may be independent of this despite the strong influence that the upper estuary water quality would play. Mill River is somewhat similar to the Southwest River in that there are other locations where sea lettuce grows in inaccessible areas. The upper estuary may be prevented from becoming anoxic by harvest in the same area, although once again downstream areas may act more independently. Because of the close proximity of the shoreline access to the harvest area this area is suggested for multiple harvest cycles (efficiency of machine time). The Trout/Stanley and Founds/Granville estuaries also have well documented annual anoxic events. Unlike the Southwest and Mill River however anoxia in these areas is thought to be strongly linked. As a result harvest of one or the other of these areas could still leave the entire area completely anoxic as oxygen depleted water is circulated throughout the area. This area was therefore not selected as a harvest area. Of the remaining areas Covehead Bay has the most suitability for harvest under this project. Although it is not know to exhibit anoxia on an annual basis it has had many reported anoxic events over the last number of years. The sea lettuce and anoxia are confined to more or less the upper reaches of the estuary and these are not influenced buy anoxia in downstream areas. There is good shoreline access for offloading and the area can be efficiently harvested. As resources permit in this project sea lettuce will be harvested from the upper Covehead Bay in 1-2 harvest cycles. 73
