3 2017 Corn Hybrid Performance Test General Information: The 2017 Corn Hybrid Performance Tests were conducted in four different counties in south central Kentucky: Caldwell (Princeton), Christian (Pembroke), Warren (Bowling Green), and Logan (Adairville). A test was also conducted in Weakley County (Greenfield), Tennessee and Mississippi County (Charleston), MO. Wheat Tech will typically have a hybrid performance test in each of the previously stated counties in order to encompass the range of corn growing acres that are consulted on. Hybrids were separated into three maturity categories: early ( 111 days), medium ( days) and late ( 115 days). There were a total of 86 different hybrids tested this year at all the KY locations, with 21 in the early group, 30 in the medium group, and 35 in the late group. There were a total of 57 hybrids tested at the TN location, with 9 in the early group, 22 in the medium group, and 26 in the late group. The MO location had a total of 56 hybrids, with 8 in the early group, 24 in the medium, and 24 in the late. The plots were planted in two rows by 40 feet with a Kincaid Voltra planter. They were also set up in a randomized complete block design, with four replications. Tests were conducted using 30 inch row spacing. KY and TN locations were planted at 30,000 seeds per acre, while MO was planted at 32,000 seeds per acre. All pre and post sprays were conducted by Wheat Tech. Locations were harvested using a Kincaid 8-XP combine with a HarvestMaster Classic GrainGage HM800 running the Mirus software. Growing Season: The 2017 corn growing season began the same as many springs tend to begin, full of rainfall. The R&D department sets a target beginning planting date of on or around April 1 st, and due to wet weather, we did not plant the first corn plot until April 7 th. The Caruthersville very fine sandy loam soil type combined with the field being strip-tilled at the MO location allows for the soil to dry out quicker, despite the early precipitation. The spring would allow for a few other good days of planting weather early in April. Conditions from approximately April 6 th April 11 th would allow for the Caldwell and Christian county locations to be planted next. The Caldwell location was also tilled with a vertical tillage implement which made conditions just right for planting. Warren county would be next, however; it would wait until the 15 th. According to on the 11 th the WKU farm received 0.46 inches of rain, and from the 16 th 23 rd a total of 2.94 inches fell, with some precipitation recorded every day. This, combined with a couple other rainfall events throughout the month of April, would delay planting of the Logan county and Weakley county, TN locations until May 3 rd and 10 th. The trend of rainfall continued throughout most of the growing season. Of course, different locations experienced extended periods of no precipitation, which had a large influence on the yields. The beginning of July brought plenty of rainfall, however; starting approximately July 9 th we experienced several weeks of dry weather. According to Greenfield, TN only had 0.08 inches of rain between July 9 th and August 5 th. The hybrids here were going through the reproductive growth stages during this time, which is the most important time to avoid water stress. Severe water stress during silking tends to desiccate the silks and pollen grains causing poor pollination. Water stress during silking will result in the greatest yield reduction. (Irrigation management for corn. NebGuide G1850. University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension). This was a contributing factor to the reason why the TN location only had a mean yield of bushels per acre, while the KY four location average was and MO was bushels per acre. Disease pressure was geographically specific and not as wide spread as in years past. The Mississippi county, MO, Caldwell county, KY, and Warren county, KY locations experienced very little disease pressure, and most of the disease was Grey Leaf Spot that arrived in the later growth stages. The Christian county, KY plot saw some Southern Rust come in later in the growing season. The TN plot also experienced some Southern Rust, however; with the later planting date, the pressure increased higher than the amount at Christian county. The Logan county location was victim to higher late season disease pressure than any other. Grey Leaf Spot and Northern Corn Leaf Blight were present in high enough concentrations to rate. Corn harvest got off to a slow start. From September 1 st 14 th the high and low temperature were much different than the 15 year averages. According to the 15-year average high for our office location is F and the actual high was only F. The moistures would eventually become dry enough to begin harvest on September 16 th. 1

4 Data Interpretation: The tables on the following pages have been prepared with the entries listed in order of performance, the highest-yielding entry being listed first. All yields presented have been adjusted to 15.5% moisture. At the bottom of the tables are three different values: LSD (Least Significant Difference), CV (Coefficient of Variation), and Grand Mean. The mean yields of any two varieties being compared must differ by at least the LSD amount shown to be considered different in yielding ability at the 5% level of probability of significance. CV is a measure of the error variability found within each experiment. It is the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean. Grand Mean is the mean of all values in the group.
