3 2015 Soybean Variety Performance Test General Information: The 2015 Soybean Variety Performance Tests were conducted in four different locations: Bradford, TN, Allensville, KY, Franklin, KY, and Charleston, MO. The Bradford, TN location was the only full season soybean test and it was planted behind soybeans; all other locations were true double cropped tests planted behind wheat or barley. Cultural practices changed throughout regions. The Charleston, MO location had the straw burned off prior to planting. This location was also placed under a pivot. All KY locations were no-tilled into the remaining residue, as was the TN location. The varieties were separated into three maturity groups: 4.3, , and 4.8. There were a total of 72 varieties in the Bradford, TN test. At both the Allensville, KY and Adairville, KY locations there were a total of 100 varieties, while, in Missouri, there were 54. The plots were planted four rows wide by 40 feet long with a Hege drill. The Franklin, KY and TN test locations had four replications, while Allensville, KY and MO had three. Tests were conducted using 15 inch row spacing. The Kentucky double crop locations were planted at a population of 180,000 plants per acre, while the Missouri and Tennessee locations were planted at 140,000 plants per acre. The pre and post sprays were conducted by Wheat Tech. All sites were sprayed using conventional herbicides. Locations were harvested using a Kincaid 8-XP combine with a HarvestMaster HM2000 High Capacity GrainGage, for data collection. Growing Season: West Tennessee This year, an unfortunate series of events forced us to abandon our Full Season Soybean Variety Trial, located in Bradford, TN. A very wet spring pushed the planting of this plot to the middle of June, much later than desired for a full season plot in this area. On June 15 th [the day of planting] the soil was moist, but wasn t concerning, as our plot drill was placing the seeds at a consistent depth of 1, and was closing the furrows well. With warm temperatures and abundant moisture, high expectations were had that this plot would thrive. In the days following planting, there were several precipitation events that dropped an excess of 2 of rain on the plot within an hour. Local weather stations reported a total of 3.25 of rain for Bradford, TN from 6/15 to 7/6, but according to first hand reports from our consultants in the area, the plot, and surrounding fields, received significantly more rain than this. As many growers experienced this growing season, that much rain was very detrimental to germinating seedlings and young plants, alike. The resulting effects of the wet weather, present in the plot, included; seeds rotting in the ground before germinating, water run-off traveling across furrows and piling excess dirt and existing soybean stubble on top of emerging plants, and finally, crusting ground caused the hypocotyl to snap, killing the plant entirely. As if the aforementioned hardships that the plot underwent weren t enough, a majority of the plants that endured the weather were eaten by deer. The grower in whose field we planted the plot, was unable to get into the field to plant his own beans until approximately 3 weeks after we planted. Naturally, being some of the only soybeans planted in the immediate area, the deer gravitated towards our plot and took full advantage. On July 6 th, we made the call to discard the plot completely. After observing all of the above, we conducted stand counts in several plots that seemed to be representative of the entire plot, and the results were indicative of a field that, in common practice, would need to be replanted. The population we came up with was approximately 49,000 seeds/ac; a 65% stand reduction from the 140,000 seeds/ac that were planted. Taking all of this into account, it was decided that any data yielded from this location was unsatisfactory. Wheat Tech s R&D division maintains a high standard for producing the most reliable repeatable data possible, and this location fell short of that standard. 1

4 Growing Season: South Central Kentucky Planting conditions were ideal at both of our double cropped locations, this year. A few soaking rains following wheat/barley harvest aided in keeping the soil loose and moist. The Allensville, KY location followed barley, and was planted on June 12 th. The other double cropped location was located in Franklin, KY, and was planted on June 24 th. Initial stand at this location was exceptional, but heavy rainfall in the first half of July [9.53 of 9.9 total inches for the month] kept the immature plants saturated. This proved to be somewhat of a double-edged sword in the months to come. From July 16 th to August 18 th, only 1.13 inches of rain fell, causing drought-like conditions. The early saturation of the soil helped, but the resulting shallow root systems stressed the plants during the dry period. The 0.77 inches of rain on August wasn t much, but, paired with lower average temperatures, it relieved just enough stress to push the beans through R3. Again, the rain stopped, as the Franklin location received only 0.2 from August 20 th to September 26 th. According to a SDSU Extension publication titled Effects of Drought Stress on Soybean Production, drought stress any time from R4 to shortly after R6 will reduce yields more than the same stress in any other period of development. Within this period, from late pod formation to shortly before full seed, is especially critical because flowering ceases and can no longer compensate for lost pods. Due to the stress, several soybean plants aborted pods during this time. More can be said about rainfall throughout the season at the Franklin plot, as this is the location in which our on-site Watch Dog weather station was positioned. Although the Allensville plot received slightly more rain than the Franklin location, the effects of the dry weather took a major toll on both locations. Frogeye Leaf Spot (Cercospora sojina) ratings were collected at both Kentucky double crop location. A small amount of Downy Mildew (Peronospora manshurica) was present at Franklin, however; pressure was not high enough to warrant a rating. Insect pressure was low at both locations throughout the season, but both plots still received a preventative insecticide application. Moderate volunteer wheat/barley pressure was present throughout most of the season at their respective locations. Mean yields for the Allensville and Franklin locations were 53.8 and 48.1 bushels per acre, respectively. Harvest of Allensville took place on November 13 th and Franklin on November 14 th. Very little lodging was observed at either location. Growing Season: Bootheel of Missouri The Charleston, Missouri location was planted on June 16 th. This location was planted under a pivot for the third year in a row, which played a crucial role during the dry periods we experienced this summer. June and July yielded ideal growing conditions, with the rain, specifically. Just over an inch of rain fell on the plot 3 days after planting which really helped any seeds that may not have been planted as deep, or that experienced any adverse planting conditions. According to the Missouri Mesonet, 5 miles south of Charleston, operated by the University of Missouri, this rain continued steadily and consistently throughout July, totaling 8.1 for the month. From August 10 th to September 28 th, there were only 5 rain events, averaging After the 1.26 of rain received on September 28 & 29, there would be no more until October 27 th. While these extremely dry conditions would have been detrimental to the soybeans, the pivot routinely placed 1 of rain on the plot per week, during this dry season. We were lucky to have had virtually zero problems with Palmer Pigweed in the plot this year, and a maintenance spray of an insecticide and fungicide were applied to help control diseases and problems with podworms. The Charleston location yielded very well with a mean of 62.9 bushels per acres. Data Interpretation: The tables on the following pages have been prepared with the entries listed in order of performance, the highest-yielding entry being listed first. All yields presented have been adjusted to 13% moisture. At the bottom of the tables are three different values: LSD (Least Significant Difference), CV (Coefficient of Variation), and Grand Mean. The mean yields of any two varieties being compared must differ by at least the LSD amount shown to be considered different in yielding ability at the 5% level of probability of significance. CV is a measure of the error variability found within each experiment. It is the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean. Grand Mean is the mean of all values in the group. 2
