3 2018 Soybean Variety Performance Test General Information: The 2018 Soybean Variety Performance Tests were conducted in four different locations: Trenton, TN, Guthrie, KY, Adairville, KY, and Charleston, MO. The Trenton, TN location was the only full season soybean test and it was planted behind soybeans; all other locations were true double cropped tests planted behind wheat. The Charleston, MO location had the straw burned off prior to planting, and was also placed under a pivot. Both KY locations were planted into the remaining residue, as was the TN location (all three were non-irrigated). The varieties were separated into three maturity groups: 4.4, , and 4.8. There were a total of 54 varieties in the Trenton, TN test. At both the Guthrie, KY and Adairville, KY locations there were a total of 71 varieties, while, in Missouri, there were 50 varieties. The plots were planted four rows wide by 40 feet long with a Voltra planter, manufactured by Kincaid Mfg. In previous years, certain locations were planted with only 3 replications in order to conserve space. In 2018, the decision was made to move all plots to 4 replications. This allows us to eliminate variability in our plots and preserve the highest quality of data possible. Tests were conducted using 15 inch row spacing. The Kentucky double crop locations were planted at a population of 180,000 seeds per acre, while the Missouri and Tennessee locations were planted at 140,000 seeds per acre. The pre and post sprays were conducted by Wheat Tech. The KY and MO sites were sprayed using conventional herbicides, while the TN site included glyphosate and Dicamba. Locations were harvested using a Kincaid 8-XP combine with a HarvestMaster HM800 Classic GrainGage for data collection. Growing Season: West Tennessee From May 1 to June 1, this location received 9.5 of rain which delayed the planting of the plot until June 5. More rains soon after planting presented some issues at this location; the majority of the soil being poorly drained Routon silt loam (Rt). The months of July and August were extremely hot and dry. Average temperatures were in the low 80 s (highs over 90) and rainfall totaled 3.05 and 2 respectively. This environment led to extremely low disease pressure. While some disease still developed (particularly Frogeye Leaf Spot Cercospora sojina ) the highest pressure was no greater than <5% of total plot area. Target Spot (Corynespora cassiicola) was also noticed throughout the location at very low pressure. The plot was harvested on October 24 th. Harvest at this location, along with all others, went relatively quickly as very little lodging was present. This is attributed to the warm, dry weather at crucial periods in the growing season when the plants would be putting on most of the vegetative growth. The average plant height at this location was 5 shorter than the 3 year average of 43. This location was planted with Dicamba tolerant varieties ONLY for the second year in a row. This was a defensive strategy on the part of Wheat Tech R&D, and has no direct reflection on the number of acres of Dicamba tolerant varieties in production in these regions. With so many reports of Dicamba damage to susceptible varieties/crops in these areas the previous year, we felt as if this was our only option to continue to produce data with 100% confidence and reliability. This plot received two applications of a Dicamba product, in combination with other products, during the growing season. These applications were conducted with extreme caution, and followed all labeled instructions. Data provided by Wheat Tech Agronomy R&D Division

4 Growing Season: Bootheel of Missouri Wheat Tech Agronomy The Charleston, Missouri location was planted on June 19 th. Seeds were planted at a depth of 1. Conditions were true no-till, double cropped behind wheat, with the wheat straw having been burned off prior to planting. This location was planted under a pivot for the sixth year in a row, which played a crucial role during July and August (1.7 and 2.7 of rainfall respectively). The soybeans were able to receive the moisture needed for growth, but most especially, residual herbicides were able to be activated, playing a major role in the suppression of Palmer Amaranth. This location, also, had very little disease pressure and low lodging scores; plant heights averaged 37 (2 shorter than the 3 year average). This was our highest yielding location at 72.4 bu/ac on average. Planting Dicamba tolerant soybeans ONLY in 2017, all herbicide tolerances were allowed in The plot was sprayed with conventional herbicides, and achieved excellent weed control. Harvest occurred on the 29 th of October. Growing Season: South Central Kentucky Planting conditions were ideal at both of our double cropped locations this year. There was ample moisture in the ground. Both of these locations were planted at 1 depth. The Adairville, KY location followed wheat, and was planted on June 14 th. The other double cropped plot, also following wheat, was located in Guthrie, KY, and was planted on July 2nd. Both of these locations had adequate moisture at planting which allowed for quick emergence. For the first time, both of our KY locations were planted into standing straw behind a stripper header. The Adairville plot had emerged by June 20 th and grew very well throughout the entire season is the second year that Wheat Tech R&D has allowed seed companies to participate in a fungicide treated vs untreated test on the entered varieties. This year, 71 varieties were entered by 15 different seed companies. Each variety was replicated 8 times throughout the field (4 treated with fungicide at R3, and the other 4 with no fungicide application). While there was very little disease pressure at our Adairville location, several varieties still showed positive yield responses to a fungicide application, while some showed no response, and others responded negatively. This information is invaluable from a grower standpoint, as the question arises every year; to spray a fungicide or not. The Guthrie plot got off to somewhat of a slow start, receiving less than 2 of rain in the 36 days following planting. That being said, the plot recovered very quickly in August and September with close to 10 of rain falling and average daily temperatures in the mid 70 s. Again, here in KY, the same disease pressure mirrored that of our double crop plot in MO and full season plot in TN; very light Frogeye Leaf Spot. Mean yields for the Adairville and Guthrie locations were 55.5 and 58.2 bushels per acre, respectively. Soybean harvest 2018 was put to a halt soon after it began. From October 31 to November 18, 5.37 of rain kept many growers in this area out of the fields completely. With test weights at risk of heavy decline, large fields, as well as small plots, were harvested wetter than normal, some being harvested at around 16% moisture. Luckily, no real damage occurred. Harvest of Guthrie took place on November 18 th and Adairville on November 21 st. Data Interpretation: The tables on the following pages have been prepared with the entries listed in order of performance, the highest-yielding entry being listed first. All yields presented have been adjusted to 13% moisture. At the bottom of the tables are three different values: LSD (Least Significant Difference), CV (Coefficient of Variation), and Grand Mean. The mean yields of any two varieties being compared must differ by at least the LSD amount shown to be considered different in yielding ability at the 5% level of probability of significance. CV is a measure of the error variability found within each experiment. It is the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean. Grand Mean is the mean of all values in the group.
