3 2017 Soybean Variety Performance Test General Information: The 2017 Soybean Variety Performance Tests were conducted in four different locations: Humboldt, TN, Allensville, KY, Franklin, KY, and Charleston, MO. The Humboldt, TN location was the only full season soybean test and it was planted behind soybeans; all other locations were true double cropped tests planted behind wheat. Cultural practices change throughout regions. The Charleston, MO location had the straw burned off prior to planting. This location was also placed under a pivot. Both KY locations were planted into the remaining residue, as was the TN location. The varieties were separated into three maturity groups: 4.4, , and 4.8. There were a total of 42 varieties in the Humboldt, TN test. At both the Allensville, KY and Franklin, KY locations there were a total of 74 varieties, while, in Missouri, there were 29 varieties. The plots were planted four rows wide by 40 feet long with a brand new Voltra planter, manufactured by Kincaid Mfg. The Franklin, KY and TN test locations had four replications, while MO and Allensville, KY had three. Tests were conducted using 15 inch row spacing. The Kentucky double crop locations were planted at a population of 180,000 seeds per acre, while the Missouri and Tennessee locations were planted at 140,000 seeds per acre. The pre and post sprays were conducted by Wheat Tech. The KY sites were sprayed using conventional herbicides, while the TN and MO sites included glyphosate. Locations were harvested using a Kincaid 8-XP combine with a HarvestMaster HM800 Classic GrainGage, for data collection. Growing Season: West Tennessee The first half of May was not as wet as it has been in previous years, though there was still enough rain for the ground to hold adequate moisture, without being saturated. This allowed us to plant our plot in a timely matter, matching up with the time that the majority of full season soybeans in this area were planted. At planting, seeds were placed at 1 and furrows were closing well. Conditions were ideal throughout the next couple of months, as average temperatures were roughly 75 degrees. The months of May through September each averaged approximately 4.5 of rain, with the exception being July, bringing 7. The consistent rainfall paired with warm temperatures caused plants to grow extremely tall, resulting in higher lodging scores. This environment also favors disease development. While the location was treated with a foliar fungicide, diseases (particularly Frogeye Leaf Spot Cercospora sojina ) developed much later in the season, presumably after the fungicide began losing efficacy. Target Spot (Corynespora cassiicola) was also noticed throughout the location at low pressure. The plot was harvested on October 14 th. Harvest at this location, along with others, was slowed dramatically due to Green Stem Syndrome (GSS). While there are many theories behind the cause of GSS, there have been no concrete conclusions as to why it occurs. As it doesn t seem to affect yield, it drastically slows harvest. This location, along with the Charleston, MO location, were planted with Dicamba tolerant varieties ONLY in This was a defensive strategy on the part of Wheat Tech R&D, and has no direct reflection on the number of acres of Dicamba tolerant varieties in production in these regions. With so many reports of Dicamba damage to susceptible varieties/crops in these areas the previous year, we felt as if this was our only option to continue to produce data with 100% confidence and reliability. This plot received two applications of Xtendimax, in combination with other products, during the growing season. These applications were conducted with extreme caution, and followed all labeled instructions. Growing Season: Bootheel of Missouri The Charleston, Missouri location was planted on June 20 th. Seeds were planted at a depth of 1. Conditions were true no-till, double cropped behind wheat, with the wheat straw having been burned off prior to planting. This location was planted under a pivot for the fifth year in a row, which played a crucial role during July and August (1.37 and 2.21 of rainfall respectively). Data provided by Wheat Tech Agronomy R&D Division

4 Growing Season: Bootheel of Missouri- Continued The soybeans were able to receive the moisture needed for growth, but most especially, residual herbicides were able to be activated, playing a major role in the suppression of Palmer Pigweeds. This location received significantly less rainfall than the Humboldt, TN location. While disease still appeared later in the season (at very low pressure), the lack of moisture created an environment unsuitable for disease development. While this plot, too, was planted with Dicamba tolerant soybeans ONLY in 2017, no form of Dicamba was applied to the location. Our post-emerge herbicide application took place during the brief ban on the use of Dicamba in the state of Missouri. In an unfortunate event, this year our Charleston location was plagued by Root-knot (Meloidogyne) nematodes. As the soybeans were reaching maturity, irregular senescence, along with plant stunting was noticed and several soil samples, targeting nematodes, were taken. These samples were sent to the SCN Diagnostics lab at the University of Missouri ( The results yielded a staggering 1,110 root-knot nematodes [on average] per 100 cc of soil, with 299 nematodes/100 cc of soil being the economic threshold. The NDVI image below, was taken on October 2 nd while 90% of leaves were still on the plants. The affected areas show up clearly as yellow and red, while a healthy plant should show up as all green. In conclusion, the resulting data from this location is included in the report, but must be viewed with the understanding of the problems that occurred. The location was harvested on October 25 th, and yielded very well with a mean of bushels per acre. Data provided by Wheat Tech Agronomy R&D Division

5 Growing Season: South Central Kentucky Planting conditions were ideal at both of our double cropped locations this year. There was ample moisture in the ground, and straw from previously harvested wheat was minimal. Both of these locations were planted at 1 depth. The Allensville, KY location followed wheat, and was planted on June 12 th. The other double cropped plot, also following wheat, was located in Franklin, KY, and was planted on June 28 th. Both of these locations had adequate moisture at planting which allowed for quick and consistent emergence. The Allensville plot had emerged by June 18 th and grew very well throughout the entire season. This location had 3 replications, due to the nature of the study being conducted and how much acreage it covered is the first year that Wheat Tech R&D has allowed seed companies to participate in a fungicide treated vs untreated test on the entered varieties. This year, 74 varieties were entered by 17 different seed companies. Each variety was replicated 6 times throughout the field (3 treated with 7 fl.oz of Quadris Top SBX at R3, and the other 3 with no fungicide application). While there was very little disease pressure at our Allensville location, several varieties still showed positive yield responses to a fungicide application, while some showed no response, and others responded negatively. This information is invaluable from a grower standpoint, as the question arises every year; to spray a fungicide or not. The Franklin plot got off to a great start and showed no sign of slowing down until mid-july. From July 9 th until August 3 rd, this plot received no rainfall whatsoever. This location yielded 14 bu/ac less than its counterpart in Allensville. Although 16 days difference in planting may not seem like much, this year, 3 of rain fell between June 12 th and June 28 th. This amount of rain at such a crucial time to a soybean was proven in 2017 by these two plots. It s apparent that planting date is more than just a number, it dictates how your crop will perform for the next 4-5 months. Again, here in KY, the same disease pressure mimed that of our double crop plot in Charleston, MO; very light Frogeye Leaf Spot occurring late. Mean yields for the Allensville and Franklin locations were 69.6 and 55.6 bushels per acre, respectively. Harvest of Allensville took place on October 31 st and Franklin on November 11 th. Data Interpretation: The tables on the following pages have been prepared with the entries listed in order of performance, the highest-yielding entry being listed first. All yields presented have been adjusted to 13% moisture. At the bottom of the tables are three different values: LSD (Least Significant Difference), CV (Coefficient of Variation), and Grand Mean. The mean yields of any two varieties being compared must differ by at least the LSD amount shown to be considered different in yielding ability at the 5% level of probability of significance. CV is a measure of the error variability found within each experiment. It is the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean. Grand Mean is the mean of all values in the group.
