2 About the ABB group ABB is a leading power and automation technologies company that employs about people globally. Headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland, the company is listed on the stock exchanges in London/Zurich, Stockholm and New York. ABB's history goes back to 1988, when two electrical engineering companies, Asea from Sweden and BBC Brown Boveri from Switzerland, merged to form one of the largest electrical engineering companies in the world. Both companies, founded in the early 1890s, were leaders in their fields. Introduction to ABB in South Africa ABB was formed in South Africa in 1992 and currently employs more than 2400 people countrywide. Products and services ABB South Africa offers a wide range of power and automation technologies solutions from a comprehensive product and service portfolio. Our power technologies business offers complete solutions to utilities, including electrical power infrastructure for transmission and distribution networks and associated products and systems, such as substations, reactive power compensation, utilities automation (including protection, control and Scada), water EPC contracts and power plant automation. The automation technologies operation supplies products, systems and services to the pulp and paper, mining, metals and minerals, cement, chemicals and petrochemicals as well as manufacturing and consumer industries. Our project capabilities include feasibility studies, project management, design, construction, installation, commissioning and customer training. We offer service for all installed ABB products. 3 Our commitment to sustainability Sustainability is an important part of ABB's business. Our products and systems are designed to make our customers more competitive and more sustainable by helping to increase energy efficiency, industrial productivity and the reliability of processes and systems of all sizes, even very large infrastructure systems such as power grids. Black Economic Empowerment The group recognises the need to continuously support and contribute to Black Economic Empowerment (BEE). Recognising the requirements for BEE, ABB in 2002 facilitated a 20% equity sale of its holding and operational companies in South Africa to Wipcapital (Part of the women-owned and run financial services company, WIPHOLD). This relationship is mutually beneficial as ABB gained access to local expertise in financial services, and Wipcapital is better able to achieve its Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE), which benefits rural women. Procurement is another opportunity for ABB to empower previously disadvantaged communities and priority is given to Black suppliers in this area. Employment Equity ABB is committed to creating and maintaining an environment that provides equal opportunities to all its employees, with special consideration for historically disadvantaged groups. To this end, the company has an Employment Equity (EE) policy, which is supported by EE committees at all our sites. In 2005 the number of employees from the designated EE groups reached 51% of ABB's staff complement. The company employs 30% black women at board level. 4 Corporate Social Investment (CSI) ABB believes in supporting projects that are sustainable and will support communities over the long term. We focus on improving the quality of life of underprivileged people. Our priority is the communities from where we employ people. The company has a CSI policy, which presently focuses on job skills training, adult education and community support. Health and safety The health and safety of our employees, contractors, customers and others affected by our activities is a key priority for ABB. The starting point of our health and safety programme is our health and safety policy: To provide a safe and healthy working environment at all sites and facilities and to take adequate steps to prevent accidents and injury to health arising out of the course of work by minimizing so far as is reasonably practicable, the causes of hazards inherent in the working environment. 5 Environment ABB's products, systems, solutions and services are designed to improve our customers' businesses - centered around improving grid reliability and increasing industrial productivity - while lowering environmental impact. We seek to minimize the environmental impact of our technologies and products, passing on this expertise to customers and suppliers. At the same time we try to ensure that our business is environmentally friendly and energy-efficient. Environmental quality standards are considered equal to price, quality and reliable delivery when we select suppliers. All of ABB's eight operations in South Africa have received certification for ISO 9001 and ISO environmental management systems. ABB has, together with several South African business organisations and industry associations, signed an energy efficiency accord with the Department of Minerals and Energy. This voluntary accord has a strategy that targets a 15% reduction in final energy demand for the industrial sector by 2015, and a 12% improvement in energy-efficiency for the nation as a whole by the same date. Business ethics ABB is committed to the highest standards of ethical behaviour and integrity. We believe that ethical and economic values are interdependent and that the business community must always strive to operate within the accepted norms established by national and international authorities. ABB has a business ethics policy, which is implemented widely in the group. Employees are also trained on our business principles, which support our values.
