3 1. Introduction Metro s commitments to Disabled Passengers are set out in the document Making Rail Accessible. You can obtain a copy from Metro s website ( ) Metro or by phoning This guide aims to give enough information for passengers to make decisions about their journeys on Metro. If however you need further information about an individual station you can contact Metro on or contactus@twmetro.co.uk This number can only give information on access issues, for enquiries about the Metro timetable, bus services or fares and tickets you should contact Traveline on If you need assistance to undertake your journey on Metro you should book this 6hrs in advance by phoning Lifts and Ramps. All Metro stations are accessible by level access, ramps or lifts. Lifts vary in size but all can accommodate a wheelchair as long as it is no larger than 1.4m (4 feet 7inches) long and 0.7m (2 feet 3 inches) wide. Mobility scooters are not permitted on Metro. Some of the older stations that were adapted for use by Metro have ramps that are steeper than current accessibility standards. Some disabled people, in particular manual wheelchair users, may find these ramps difficult to use. The stations concerned are Walkergate, Monkseaton and West Monkseaton. In addition some of the stations with level access do not have ramped access between platforms and the route between platforms requires the use of local roads. Stations in this category include Tynemouth, Cullercoats, Benton, Ilford Road and Jarrow. Greater detail on all of these stations is given in their individual entries. 1.2 Boarding Metro Trains. Station platforms are approximately the same height as train floors. There is however a nominal gap of 121mm (4¾ inches) and a step 63mm (2.5 inches). This may vary from station to station (full details in individual station entries) and if wheelchair users have any concerns over boarding trains they should phone for advice. 1.3 Help Points. All Metro stations have Help points. These are located on platforms and also where appropriate on concourses. They are clearly marked and can be used to alert Metro staff to emergencies. In addition they can be used for enquiries or to request Metro Access Guide: April 2010 Page 3
4 assistance, for example if a lift is out of service. All help points also have a facility to book a taxi to collect you from the station. N.B. If using this facility you will have to check that the vehicle that is booked is suitable for your individual needs. Nexus cannot be held responsible if accessible vehicles are not available. 1.4 Announcements Many Metro stations have automated departure announcements giving the destination of the next due train. Drivers also announce key stations and interchange points on board trains. 1.5 Bus Many bus services in Tyne and Wear are operated with low floor buses. These can provide connections to Metro or alternative routes that may, in some cases, be easier for disabled passengers to use instead of Metro. Traveline ( ) can give details of which services are operated with low floor vehicles. Timetable information on all bus services in Tyne and Wear is also available at Toilets Only Heworth, Gateshead, South Gosforth, Four Lane Ends and Whitley Bay stations have toilet facilities. All include an accessible toilet with a National Key Scheme (RADAR) lock. There are toilet facilities in the vicinity of a number of other Metro stations and these are detailed in individual station entries. 1.7 Other Operators Rail: For Main Line train services contact National Rail Enquiries on If you need assistance when travelling on main line services you can book assistance for the whole of your journey with the operator that you start your journey on.
