1 Local bus links in Gateshead Designing a network to meet your needs TYNE AND WEAR INTEGRATED TRANSPRT AUTHRITY Public consultation 15 March - 4 June 2010

2 Local bus links in Gateshead Designing a network to meet your needs Public consultation People in Gateshead make 24 million bus journeys annually - that s an average of more than 127 journeys a year for every resident! Nexus, Gateshead Council and the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority (ITA) want to make sure the network of bus services in the area meets residents needs. To do this, Nexus has worked together with bus companies and local councils to examine how current services operate and to look at what improvements could be made to the subsidised services in the network, which are the ones Nexus pays for. We have called this the Accessible Bus Network Design Project (see below). We want your views on the proposals we are now making to improve bus services in Gateshead, which you can find in this document. We want to hear from you whether you rely on the bus in your daily life, use buses only occasionally or even if you don t but might consider doing so in the future. You ll find details of different ways to respond on the back page of this brochure. This consultation forms part of the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority s Bus Strategy, a three year action plan to improve all aspects of the bus services in Tyne and Wear. Copies of the Bus Strategy can be downloaded from Why have we designed a new network? Research by Nexus identified two main concerns for bus travellers they want buses that get passengers where they want to go, and run at the right times for them. We have tried to design a service so that as many people as possible in Gateshead can reach local centres, major employers and community facilities like shops, doctors surgeries and post offices, in no more than 30 minutes from the moment they leave home. Around 90% of all buses in Tyne and Wear are operated as commercial services, where the routes and frequencies are decided by the bus operators (Arriva, Stagecoach, Go North East and others). The remaining 10% are subsidised by Nexus using money provided by the councils in Tyne and Wear. Nexus can pay for the whole of a route or just part of it. It can also pay for a route at certain times of day (often early mornings, evenings and Sundays) when there are fewer passengers but the route fills an important social need. ur consultation concentrates on all subsidised services and the changes we propose for them. We would like you to tell us whether our proposals meet your needs. We are very keen to get your comments on these proposals we will consider all constructive ideas and make changes to our plans where there is a good case for them. ur aim is to make more effective use of the funding we already have. The maps and text in this leaflet show all bus services and Metro links so you can see all the public transport options available in your area. But please remember we are only seeking to make changes to those bus services which Nexus subsidises, highlighted in colour and described overleaf. As well as guaranteeing to provide buses that are fully accessible on the services proposed here, we also want to give a consistent look to them. We would like your views on the design we propose, which is included in the questionnaire.
