Certainly if you re a World Cup follower, and of German descent, you might say it s been a fantastic year! Like the World Cup, in this marine industry, no wins come easy. The markets have certainly presented challenges. It seems that the pleasure craft market continues to struggle in recovery with positive signs here and there, but not the steady recovery that we ve all hoped for. On the commercial craft side, we see that things are steady and generally stronger. We anticipate a generally positive result come year s end, but credit will certainly go out to the strong efforts of our sales and service teams. may be tagged as the Year of Service, in reality every year is the year of service for ZF Marine, and it will never stop being that way. Truly, Service Matters. We re also at a time in the year when once again the leaves will soon turn their colour and the days grow shorter. It reminds us that change is the only constant. So also is there change for me. I have been asked by the ZF Group CEO, Dr. Sommer to take a new position within the ZF Group. I will be leaving the ZF Marine organization by the end of this year. I leave my post with positive feelings. I am still confident that we are on the right path forward. We have endured a number of growing pains over the past three years as we ve po sitioned ourselves for the future, but it has made ZF Marine stronger, of that I m sure. I want to take this chance to thank you, our customers and business partners for your dedication and support. I also want to thank our entire ZF Marine team, they ve gone above and beyond over and over to bring us to where we are today. Please look for a hello from my successor in this space in the spring 2015 ZF report. I hope that as many of you will have the chance to meet him at various events and meetings in the coming months, you will show our new coach the great support and commitment to ZF Marine that you ve shown me. 3 News from the Regions News from the Regions EUROPE European Partner Conference On July 22nd and 23rd, ZF Marine held its first ever European Partner Conference. The event was held at ZF Marine s new training facility in Arco, Italy. In attendance were 20 ZF Marine service partners from all over Europe. At the event, attendees received information about ZF Marine s activities in general, the latest product information for the product families from Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands as well as getting an overview about the latest activities with regards to the After Sales business, and the latest marketing materials. Aside from the schedule of business there were many opportunities for the attendees to network since this was the first time they have all been together. North America Thrusters for the inland waterway ZF Marine recently attended the christening of American Commercial Line s newbuild American Way This is the second of six new vessels for the carrier, and the first new builds in 25 years for the company. Constructed by Steiner Shipyard, all of the vessels will be equipped with ZF AT 5000 WM FP thrusters from ZF Marine. ACL is one of the largest operators in the inland waterway with a fleet of 2,300 barges and 100 tow boats. In attendance from ZF Marine were staff from our St. Rose, LA and Miramar, FL locations, as well as senior management from our factory in Krimpen, Netherlands. SOUTH America Marine industry going strong Activities related to sugar cane export for ethanol production have increased significantly in Brazil, as the country wants to be a key player in this market. As a result, new vessel construction in Sao Paulo state is ongoing. ZF do Brasil completed the sale of twenty eight W1800 transmissions to ship owner DNP for repowering of pushers and barges. Petrobras awarded contracts for 23 new Offshore Support Vessels as part of bid #6 of the Prorefam program with a total investment of 1.7B USD. All vessels must be hired in 2014 and is a strong opportunity for ZF Tunnel Thursters produced by ZF do Brazil. The following shipyards were awarded contracts; PSV 4500: Asgaard Navegação (6), Starnav Serviços Marítimos (6), Bram Offshore (3), Wilson Sons (2), CBO (2). AHTS: CBO (4). Two ferries are being constructed for ship owner Barcas from Rio de Janeiro by Inace shipyard. The 50m long vessels can carry up to 2,000 passengers each. Both will be equipped with ZF 5355 gearboxes along with MTU engines. ASIA PACIFIC ZF Seminar in Wuhan The first Marine seminar in China this year was held on 24 July in Wuhan, a city where many Marine designers and institutions are based. This seminar showcased the full range of ZF Marine products and services in China. With a turnout of almost 50 attendees, our staff took the opportunity to share new product information with existing customers and interact with direct and indirect customers within the district of Wuhan. Attendees range from direct customers, designers and shipyard owners to engine makers and their customers. 4 report Marine Propulsion Systems

4 Cover Story Cover Story VROON GROUP: EXPANDING THE FLEET WITH ZF TECHNOLOGY The privately held company, which with related firms operates 165 deep-sea cargo vessels, has been owned by four generations of the Vroon family since it s founding in The firm has been active in the offshore support services since Their offshore fleet includes four categories of specialized vessels: platform supply vessels (PSV), anchor-handling tugs (AHT), emergency response and rescue vessels (ERRV), and subsea support vessels (SSV). It seems natural that the shipyards that they choose for some of the most sophisticated vessels in their new-build program should have a similar breadth of experience. ERRVs are an integral part of the support and safety program in the North Sea oil fields. In the early years these were converted fishing trawlers but the importance with which the industry views the safety of their workers has led to an evolution to sophisticated vessels purpose-built for their function. Vroon currently has six additional 50-meter vessels of this type recently delivered or in build at Nanjing East Star Shipyard on the Lower Yangtze River. The 2014-delivered VOS Fabulous is equipped with multiple rescue systems capable of recovering personnel in all weather. The vessel is also equipped with firefighting pumps and monitors as well as oil dispersant sprays amongst other emergency support systems. The new SSVs will have the potential for diverse work including wind-farm support, but their primary task will be installing protective mats to shield submarine pipelines from damage. The vessel s big deck crane will lift the protective mats and lower them over the vessel s side. As these boats will be required to work in seas with significant swells, the crane is fitted with a roll-compensating feature. This results in the mat being lowered evenly and safely to the pipeline on the ocean floor. All the while, a technician as well as the crane operator can monitor the sub-sea progress from a camera mounted in a remote roving submarine tethered to the vessel. In recent years the global search for new hydrocarbon resources has extended into deeper and more remote parts of the oceans. At the same time, demands for worker and environmental safety have necessitated the development of technologies unimaginable short decades ago. To meet these demands, Netherlands-based Vroon Group is currently in an extensive build program to add vessels to its current fleet of 90 offshore support vessels. ZF plays an important role in the propulsion systems on ERRV fleet, having provided a complete shaft-line solution for the vessels. In addition to more conventional components, ZF also supplied ZF4011 FP-RT bow thrusters for each vessel. These thrusters can function as a conventional tunnel thruster in their raised position or as a fully rotating, nozzled azimuth thruster when lowered. ZF has an important role in the propulsion systems. The Fujian Southeast Shipyard has specialized in off shore support vessels for the past two decades. Located in the northern part of the coastal province of Fujian, the yard is now dedicated to building advanced offshore support vessels. Two 68-meter Surface Support Vessels currently under construction at Fujian, continues a well-established relationship between Fujian and Vroon Group. To be named VOS Sugar and VOS Star, the vessels will be classed to ABS standards. While the roll-compensating crane adjusts for ocean swell, there remains significant movement from both wind and tidal currents. It is a challenge that Vroon Group faces on their platform supply vessels that have to hold their sterns steady while cargo is being transferred to an oil rig platform in the often-turbulent waters of the North Sea. It is just as much of a challenge when they are working with the precise positioning of objects on the ocean floor. Computerized dynamic positioning systems have made huge advances in recent years. In their most basic configuration they synchronize the work of a vessel s two main engines and a bow thruster to a specific GPS position. The three points of thrust will allow most vessels to hold position in relatively calm waters. In more challenging weather the addition of a transverse stern thruster mounted on the keel just ahead of the main propellers will add a greater level of precision and position keeping accuracy. FUJIAN SHIPBUILDING: MODERN VESSELS WITH MODERN COMPONENTS In 2010 China became the world s largest shipbuilder by tonnage. A decade ago, as production of less sophisticated vessels began to demonstrate a competence and a rapid growth, the Central Government of China urged the shipbuilding industry to take on the challenge to increase the complexity and value of the vessels as well. On the rugged coast of Fujian province to the north of Hong Kong, the Fujian Southeast Shipyard followed a long tradition of commercial fish boat construction. However, by the year 2000 the yard was becoming increasingly noted for its strength in building vessels for the offshore oil industry. In the ensuing years, the yard has delivered over 150 units of 59 meter AHTS. A significant number of these are now working in the fleets of global majors such as Vroon. The yard has also delivered dozens of Platform Supply Vessels and they are currently building several Subsea Support Vessels for Vroon. The yard has delivered advanced vessels with diesel electric propulsion, dynamic positioning systems, controllable pitch and azimuthing propellers. Each of these advanced technologies requires the yard to liaise and work cooperatively with suppliers in the purchase, instal- lation and sea trials of such equipment. In various projects and with a variety of technologies from marine gears to azimuthing drives, and tunnel thrusters the yard has worked with ZF. The result has been a strong relationship built on trust and good service. Local contact is maintained with the ZF China office in Shanghai. Technicians are also flown out to the yard from the factory in Germany and the Netherlands as required. As in any business, it is the relationships, built over time, that assure the end user of the quality of product and fabrication. The Fujian Shipbuilding yard, ZF Marine and Vroon Offshore have built that relationship into a series of state-of-the-art offshore support vessels. Henry Zhou, Marine Propulsion systems commercial craft sales manager for ZF China, explained the ongoing nature of this cooperation. We have been doing business with the Fujian Southeast Shipyard for ten years now. On the current project with the subsea support vessels we were involved in consultations with the owners and they yard at the design stage to plan the arrangement of the thrusters and to propose the most suitable models to achieve maximum efficiency. But the ZF role does not end with the sale of a product. Working with Vroon s supervisor at the Fujian Southeast Shipyard, as well as the yard s own engineering staff, they assist the shipyard with installation details and finally testing of the thrusters. Good service requires immediate response to issues, explains Zhou, and follow up with competent engineering and technical support to the shipyard. vessel a DP1 notation from a class society such as ABS. Increasingly companies that charter offshore vessels are insisting on the redundancy in these systems and require a DP2 designation. To achieve DP2 classification, the two 68-meter Sub Surface Support Vessels being built at Fujian Southeast Shipyard have redundant thrusters. Building to ABS certification, the vessel s principal components must meet the exacting standards of that society. When such precision and reliability is required ZF components become a natural choice. The thrusters, two on the bow and two on the stern, will be tied into the system that will also employ the vessels two controllable pitch propellers to allow the vessel to hold position in a precise spot on the ocean surface. In the stern, two ZF TT4001 tunnel thrusters with controllable pitch 1,350 mm diameter propellers and 400 kw electric drives will provide a combined lateral thrust of up to twelve tons. In the bow a ZF TT5001 tunnel thruster with a fixed pitch 1,700 mm diameter propeller and a 600 kw variable speed, electric drive will generate up to nine tons of lateral thrust. This tunnel thruster incorporates a double walled tunnel insulating the vessel s interior for greater crew comfort. A ZF AT4011 FP-RT retractable bow thruster with a 1,350 mm nozzled, fixed-pitch propeller will provide up to nine tons of lateral thrust while retracted. Lowered, the nozzle prop can be rotated 360 degrees. The thruster s powerful water-cooled variable speed drive and water cooled electric motor combination can offer supplemental propulsion capable of moving the whole vessel independent of the main engine power in an emergency. With this complete thruster package the vessel is capable of operating under the Classification ABS DP2, explains Ron Leeuwesteijn, ZF sales manager for Marine Propulsion Technology Commercial Craft Thruster Systems. Speaking about the recently launched VOS Fabulous, from the Nanjing East Star Shipyard, the first ERRV vessel constructed in China, Vroon Offshore s Newbuild Superintendent, Foppe Molenaar praised the role of ZF in the project, We are very pleased with the great support that we received from ZF Marine s service and project departments on VOS Fabulous, he said, Throughout the project ZF s team always showed a specific understanding to both the owner s and the shipyard s requirements to complete the project and get the first vessel launched. ZF toughgear A NeW BrAND LAUNcheS With A NeW transmission FAmiLY There was a double introduction for ZF Marine at the recent SMM Show in Hamburg. The ToughGear Brand was introduced for W series transmissions. The ToughGear name embodies all the strengths of ZF s transmissions designed for the commercial vessel market. Built for the most demanding duty cycles in the harshest environments, ToughGear transmissions can take it. The latest transmission in the ToughGear family, the W10000, was also revealed at SMM. This state of the art, robust design is built to maximize uptime in the sometimes harsh commercial vessel duty cycles. The W10000 is rated to 2,400 kw (3200 hp) and is perfectly suited to the Tug and Offshore vessel markets. It has the highest power density of its class, available ratios up to 7.9:1 and a powerful PTO rated to 1,000 kw (1,300 hp). Global offshore oil production is expected to increase to 40% in 2015 and to 48% in 2030 (mostly due to the increase of production in deep water offshore fields). At a recent press event in advance of the upcoming IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover, Germany, ZF debuted its Innovation Truck a platform demonstrating the advancement of driveline technology in this segment. The 25 m (82 ft) tractor-trailer towing an additional trailer reversed, with the driver standing outside the truck utilizing nothing more than his finger and an android device. A joint realization of technology by ZF, ZF Lenksysteme (a joint venture of ZF and Bosch) and telematics specialist Openmatics s.r.o. showed what the future of truck driving might look like. The three main components of the Innovation Truck are the new ZF TraXon Hybrid automatic transmission system, ZF Servotwin Steering, and Openmatics telematics. Due to the recently started exploration of pre-salt deposits (located 200 km off the coast of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro States, there are about 50 to 80 billion barrels of oil expected), Brazil might become the 6th largest oil producer in the world by ZF marine on YoUr SmArt PhoNe AND tablet! ZF has changed its approach to service parts fundimentally, by dividing parts supply between production and aftersales. A major part of this activity was the creation of two new dedicated spare parts warehouses in Arco, Italy and Friedrichshafen, Germany, as well as the roll out of a global warehouse concept for commercial thruster components. These new warehouses have a significant physical presence at their respective locations. In our Arco, Italy location, we currently stock 2,900 part numbers with a value of 580,000 Euro, with a goal at the end of the project of 4,350 part numbers with a value of just under one million Euro. The warehouse in Friedrichshafen, Germany which handles most of our larger commercial transmission families maintains 6,000 part numbers with a value of approximately six million Euro. Our goal is to maintain a minimum stock of one vessel set per each part number. Each warehouse facility participates in programs that monitor usage to maintain a sufficient quantity of parts based on demand, but also to ensure that space is being used as efficiently as possible. Minimum quantities required are studied carefully and in the case on obsolete parts, agreements are in place with suppliers to reorder based on the supplier s lead time. In the case of our large commercial thruster products, it is a challenge logistically to have multiple inventories of these very large, heavy parts around the world. Instead, the parts team at our thruster production facility in Krimpen, Netherlands has embarked on a global warehousing concept. The parts inventories at the factory and at our regional facilities in Brazil and Singapore are evaluated bi-weekly to confirm that in case of urgent need, parts can be shipped to the customer s location as soon as possible. Other regions will be brought online in the coming months as well. The target of all this investment? On a standard parts order, parts will be received in seven days, in an urgent situation 3 days, and ultimately, in a boat down situation 24 to 36 hours. This was a really huge project for us says Marc Sommer, head of aftersales for ZF Marine. This effort not only took many hours of planning and effort to execute, it was a fundamental change in the way we supply parts to our customers. The first major steps have been completed, but we continue to grow and implement additional phases of this program. It s our hope that our customers around the world will continue to see improve ments in the availability and delivery times of the parts they need.
