The future of data coming from energy meters Eress Forum Bart Van der Spiegel Energy Management 13 th June 2018
Framework from metering to billing 0 to many Railway Undertaking operates trains EMS Energy Measurement System requests train-runs grid fee ( ) Data Collecting System Infrastructure Manager DCS commodity ( ) data for validation, estimation and allocation kwh Settlement Energy market Allocate: allocate consumptions to the correct end user distribute to correct actors in energy market Validate/estimate: validate data coming from EMS estimate missing data Exchange: allocate consumption to country where consumption took place distribute to correct settlement system The future of data coming from energy meters 2 kwh
Metering data Defined in EN :2017 Fixed at 5 minutes Multiple channels Position at the end of CEBD The future of data coming from energy meters 3
Case 1: correct energy billing Metering data EMS EVN A EMS EVN B Identified by: B - Train-run data - Customer: based on TAP/TAF messages - Distance (km): based on detections on the infrastructure - Composition: reference to EVN s (TAP/TAF messages) - Temperature: e.g. from weather stations of switch heating - Mass (tonnes): based on TAP/TAF messages Estimation e.g. (33 + 0,63 * D1 + 0,63 * D2) Wh/tonnes-km Combining Match EVN s in train with EVN s of meters Validation Positions match Consumption acceptable Allocation Invoice based on meters to customer from train-run data The future of data coming from energy meters 4
Case 2: huge potential for energy savings Energy consumption accumulated (kwh) Traction unit Oslo to Halden, May 2006 Running time 1h 45min (43-49), Distance 136,6 km Highest kwh Lowest 743 kwh Difference 366 kwh Diff 49 % Trainnr Data of energy meters was used to compare energy consumptions of train-runs in same month and on same line. On-board metering enables eco-driving as invoices are based on the real consumption The future of data coming from energy meters 5
Case 2: huge potential for energy savings Lineas: (Measured) consumption decrease of 8,75% over the last 2 years Wh/tonkm 15,00 14,50 14,00 13,50 Electricity consumption Belgium (Wh/tonkm) 2015: 14,5Wh/tonkm Increased consumption due to works on key axis (Aachen & Visé): elevated amount of restricted signals during detours and on single track lines Golden ECO-driving rules Traction + coasting (avoid cruise control) Use of electrical brake (>10% regeneration) Anticipate conflicts & unnecessary stops 2016: 14Wh/tonkm 13, : 13,25Wh/tonkm 12,50 jan.15 apr.15 jul.15 okt.15 jan.16 apr.16 jul.16 okt.16 jan.17 apr.17 jul.17 okt.17 No use of any technological aid (eg. C- DAS or Traffic Control) The future of data coming from energy meters 6
Other data Defined in EN : minute, 30 seconds, Speed Internal loads The future of data coming from energy meters 7
The future of data coming from energy meters 8
Case 3: monitoring voltages and currents Energy meter can also register voltages and currents. The higher the current, the bigger the voltage drop. In normal circumstances, the voltage on a 3 kv DC network should remain above 2700 V (ENE TSI clause regarding mean useful voltage). In case voltage drops below 2700 V, trains should automatically limit current offtake (LOC&PAS TSI clause regarding maximum current from the overhead contact line) The future of data coming from energy meters 9
Case 4: correlations between data Speed diagram of cargo train (0 to 100 km/h) Correlation between stops / speed variations and specific consumption 14,00 12,00 10,00 y = 0,7253x + 7,3637 GPS-position missing => validation needed a lot of unnecessary stops kwh/km 8,00 6,00 4,00 2,00 a lot of speed variations 0,00 0,00 2,00 4,00 6,00 Speed variations / 100 km Each extra stop increases consumption with 4% The future of data coming from energy meters 10
Voting app Question only for EMS suppliers Will you add ReadingBlock to your EMS? 1. Yes, already available 2. Yes, latest in Yes, if requested 4. No, not planning to do this The future of data coming from energy meters 11
Voting app The data of ReadingBlock is useful to Infrastructure Managers (IM) and Railway Undertakings (RU). Who should have access to this data? 1. Only the RU (that is operating the train) 2. Only the IM (for data related to its network) 3. Both IM and RU 4. All concerned parties (IM, RU, entity in charge of maintenance of traction unit, EMS-responsible, ) The future of data coming from energy meters 12
