4 BASIC DESCRIPTION APPLICATION Passenger lifts are lifts installed permanently, which serves given stopping levels, for the vertical transport of people and goods. They are available in various load capacity configurations and are intended for multistory buildings in the Coercial, Industrial and Residential sectors. The Altivate range offers the latest in Machine Room Less technology. Our lifts use counterweights which equal the weight of the lift plus 40% of its maximum rated load. This counter-weight reduces the weight the motor must lift and ensures that the lift cannot fall out of control while the cable is intact. Our traction drum machines has cable running from the lift car, up and once around a drive drum attached to the hoist motor, then back to the counterweight. The lift car and the counterweight each run in their own sets of guide rails. A second governor cable runs from the car up to a governor pulley, then down to a tension pulley at the bottom of the lift shaft, and up to the car again. This cable rotates the governor pulley at a speed directly proportional to the speed of the car. In the event of excessive car speed, the governor uses another cable to activate the emergency brake jaws which grip the guide rails and slow the car to a stop. A set of electronic laser light switchews located owards the side of the lift car activates the lift VVVF drive unit to slow and stop the car at the proper floor. As the car approaches the desired floor a floor plate activates the VVVF slow-down switch, which signals the hoist motor to reduce speed. When the car is aligned with the outer door opening, the plate activates a speed switch to stop the car. If the door zone switches also sense that the car is in the proper location, the electric door opening motor is activated to open both the inner car door and the outer floor door. Modern coercial buildings coonly have multiple lifts with a unified control system. The object of the control system is to minimise the average time any passenger spends from the time the lift call button is pushed to the arrival of the first available lift. Different systems use different levels of sophistication. The simplest systems use a single up and down button on each floor regardless of the number of lifts. When a passenger calls for a lift, the controller sends the nearest lift that is traveling in the desired direction. The approach of a lift car is signaled by an illuminated arrow or indicator panel above the lift s doors pointing up or down. Sep-17 V0 Altivate Coercial Passenger Lifts - Technical Manual P a g e 4

9 DETAILED DESCRIPTION Governor An automatic device that in the event of the speed exceeding a predetermined limit brings a lift car or counterweight to rest by operating the safety gear. Machine The power unit that applies the energy necessary to raise and lower a lift car. Guide Rails Lift Car The load-carrying unit including car frame, car platform, car enclosure, and car doors. Safety Gear A mechanical device, attached to the car frame, or to the counterweight frame, to stop the car or counterweight under an emergency condition. Lift Shaft A shaft for the travel of a lift. Control Equipment Those components control direction of travel, speed, and stopping. Landing door The opening in a lift well enclosure affording ordinary access between the landing and the lift car and which is opened and closed by a door. Cabin Entrance The opening in the lift car through which normal access is available to the landings. Counterweight A moving weight employed to balance portion of the moving load of a lift. Pit The space in the lift shaft below the level of the bottom-landing sill. Car Buffer Counterweight Buffer Sep-17 V0 Altivate Coercial Passenger Lifts - Technical Manual P a g e 9

10 LIFT SHAFT CONDITIONS The shaft should be completely enclosed (with walls, floor and roof). Accesses to the shaft should be equipped with a solid core metal door. The door should have mechanical locking and electrical locking control. Only machinery, equipment, electrical wiring, raceways, and cables directly in connection with the lift, including wiring for signals, for counication with the lift car, for lighting, heating, air conditioning, and ventilating the lift car, for fire detecting systems, for pit sump pumps, and for heating and lighting the hoistway and/or the machinery space machine room, control space, or control room are be permitted to be installed inside the lift shaft, machinery space, machine room, control space, or control room. GUIDING SYSTEM A set of steel beams above the car, called the crosshead, span the lift shaft from side to side and hold the pulley for the hoist cable. A steel structure, called the sling, extends down the sides of the car from the crosshead and cradles the floor, or platform. Steel guide rollers or guide shoes are attached to the top and bottom of the sling structure on each side to run along the guide rails. The guide rails are also steel and are attached to the interior walls of the lift shaft which runs from the top of the building to the bottom. Good quality rails and precise splicing are required to ensure the correct operation of the lift. GUIDE STRUCTURE FASTENING SYSTEM Anchors are used to fix the guide assembly to the shaft walls by means of inter-adjustable brackets. These parts will be fixed to the guides with rail clips. The walls where the guides are fixed should be of structural masonary/concrete or consist of a metal structure with horizontal shapes on a level with the fastenings. In the case of hollow brick walls, recessed metal shapes should be provided to weld the guide fixing parts or else use groets with backing plates if the wall is accessible from the rear side. 13 Special lift cars can be provided to suit irregular shaped lift shafts. For the four standard lift car configurations the doors can be arranged as; Centre opening Two powered door panels that part simultaneously Side opening Two power operated panels are geared together. One door moves twice as fast as the other door so that both doors will meet concurrently in the open position. Sep-17 V0 Altivate Coercial Passenger Lifts - Technical Manual P a g e 13

14 DOOR OPERATION METHOD City Lifts doors are high quality and have a two hour fire rating. The lift doors are opened by a power unit that is located on top of the lift car. When a lift car is level with a floor landing, the power unit moves the car door open or closed. A pick-up arm contacts rollers on the landing door which releases the door latch on the landing door. The power unit opens the car door which in turn opens the lanfding door. Sep-17 V0 Altivate Coercial Passenger Lifts - Technical Manual P a g e 14

15 MACHINE (OVERHEAD TRACTION) City Lifts provide precision made high torque, permanent magnet, synchronous motor gearless traction machines. They are equipped with a Heidenhain digital encoder to ensure a smooth speed curve providing exceptional ride quality. Machines are also fitted with 2:1 roping which reduces the Kilowatt rating of the machine required for carrying a certain amount of load resulting in better efficiency. A gearless machine consumes up to 30% less power compared to a geared machine. These machines are sealed for life and do not require any type of oiling. There is no risk of oil contamination or spill to the ground. Also, the machines provide a smooth ride for the passengers as there is low noise and nearly unlimited floor travel without vibration. Harmonics noise is totally eliminated. Disc brake technology provides a secured stop. Brake adjustment is more convenient and noise free. Frequent stop and start operation will not affect the impact on the motor. Negligible wear and tear and less maintenance is required and provides a longer life span. These Machines are used for low as well as for high speed application. Sep-17 V0 Altivate Coercial Passenger Lifts - Technical Manual P a g e 15

25 SAFETY Altivate lifts are all equipped with two primary safety mechanisms: a governor which activates in case of over speed and the emergency safety gear which consists of jaws that grip the guide rails. We also provide electromechanical door interlocks to prevent the lift from operating if the door is not completely closed and to protect passengers whilst riding in the lift. The same door interlocks also prevent the outer doors on each landing from being opened if the lift is not present. If an emergency does occur there is an alarm siren that can be activated from inside the cabin and there is also a two-way, hands free, telephone that provides passengers with instant counication to our 24/7 customer care centre. Our installation team laser levels the lift car and landings to prevent trip hazards. We also provide a deluge of modern lighting to safeguard entry and exit and this also reduces the risk of unwanted behavior. At the completion of every installation we conduct a thorough handover to all stakeholders, ensuring correct system operating. An optional UPS backed Automatic Rescue Device can be provided in the event of a main power supply failure and the lift is stopped between two floors it is moved to floor level, the automatic doors are opened and passengers are out safely. If the lift is at floor level, then the doors are automatically held open. Sep-17 V0 Altivate Coercial Passenger Lifts - Technical Manual P a g e 25

26 PRE-START CHECKLIST City Lifts is coitted to providing on time and on budget projects. We require your assistance to achieve this aim. Before installation of the lift coences at your site it is important that the following pre-start checklist is completed by you. 1. The lift shaft, landings and pit must be complete, clean, dry and adequately protected against incoming water and inclement weather. 2. The lift shaft dimensions are as per the approved layout drawings, including all hall and overhead beam penetrations. 3. All penetrations, lifting points or beams are in place, as shown on the approved drawings. 4. The lift shaft openings are protected as per local industry regulations and/or contract layout drawings. 5. Finished floor levels are indicated on each landing (F.F.L). 6. Electrical power must be available with adequate capacity (both for installation tooling and lift mains) and be correctly located as per the approved drawing. 7. A phone line must be available and be correctly located as per the approved drawing. 8. The unloading area, and transportation route to both the storage area and lift shaft must be clearly defined. 9. Provide battery backed up task lighting in the lift shaft for the installation of the lift. 10. Secure, dry, undercover materials storage location (30m²) is available within a distance of 20 metres of the lift shaft and access to the lift shaft is clear/unobstructed at all times during the installation. 11. Access to the lift shaft and stairways are safe and illuminated. 12. On site sanitation facilities are available. We urge you to make sure that these critical conditions are verified and available. In case of any questions or anticipated problems you should contact your nominated City Lifts representative. 27 LIFT SHAFT DIMENSIONS In order to install the lift(s) the lift shaft must respect dimensional tolerances and plumb-ness as specified on the approved layout drawings. Also the exact floor levels at each landing must be indicated nearby the entrance (e.g. by a 1,000 mark). Dimensional non-conformities in lift shaft are likely to require re-ordering of material or re-work and cause delays. They therefore potentially generate extra cost. We strongly emphasise the need for accurate lift shaft dimensions, tolerances and plumb-ness (+30 /- 0 ) The shaft walls are to be concrete or filled with reinforced block work that is able to properly hold masonry fasteners. Blocks should be filled every 3 to 4 courses. The shaft construction must attenuate vibrations & sound traveling into building below 45dBA. LIFT SHAFT A clean, dry two hour fire rated lift shaft built to the lift code and applicable government regulations, to the dimensions as shown and tolerance of + 30 /- 0 as shown and designed to bear the reactions as shown. A waterproof pit designed to bear the reactions shown. Penetrations/ beams for Machine Beam Installation as shown (Machine beams by City Lifts. Hoist beam by customer). Penetrations for installation platform as shown. Rough opening cut outs for landing doors as shown. Penetrations for all fixtures. 25 diameter hole in the centre of fixture location as shown. 2 Recesses and 1 penetration for the controller panel on the top floor served as shown on the approved drawings. Provide accurate grid and datum lines per landing indicating finished floor levels. Eg a 1,000 mark. Weatherproof lift shaft. Weatherproof top landing served for protection of controller panel. Cutting & closing of walls in lift shaft. Cover plate for machine beam penetrations 2 hour fire rated lift shaft. Cover plate/grouting for Installation platform penetrations 2 hour fire rated lift shaft. Grouting/making good finished front wall to landing finished frame. Ventilation in top of shaft. Area to comply with local building regulations. (located to avoid equipment in shaft). The lift shaft shall be suitably ventilated. In the absence of relevant regulations or standards, it is recoended to provide ventilation openings at the top of the lift shaft, with a minimum 0.10sqm. The ambient temperature in the lift shaft shall be maintained between 0 C & +40 C. Note: Relevant regulations and standards should be checked for the need for fire dampers. Sep-17 V0 Altivate Coercial Passenger Lifts - Technical Manual P a g e 27

28 AVAILABILITY OF POWER Prior to the coencement and during the entire installation of the lift, provide uninterrupted temporary power within 5m of the controller recess on the top floor served. This supply will cater for a maximum demand of 15 amps and be available in three phase 415 VAC and single phase 230 VAC. This supply will be used for erection, lighting, testing and operation of tools and hoisting equipment. Prior to the coencement of installation, provide permanent power, located in the controller recess as shown, with a tail of 5 metres. If multiple lifts are being installed submains per lift are required. Power supplied to be 3 phase, 50 Hertz, 5 wire, 415 volt. Maximum demand: (contract basis). Rating of mains protective device, to be greater than largest lift circuit breaker. All power supplied to City Lifts, whether permanent or temporary and/or rental shall be at the builders cost. SAFETY BARRIERS / LIFT SHAFT PROTECTION Prior to City Lifts mechanics accessing the lift shaft all openings must be protected adequately as per City Lifts drawings, specifications and AS4431 / EN For typical requirements, refer to the picture below. Sep-17 V0 Altivate Coercial Passenger Lifts - Technical Manual P a g e 28

29 SAFE ACCESS & STAIRWAYS Safe access to landings is essential. Access should be possible by means of fixed stairways with fall prevention (e.g. temporary handrails) over the complete transportation / access route. Stairways and access routes should be illuminated. The use of ladders to gain access to either the site, storage facility or the lift shaft is not acceptable. UNLOADING & STORAGE In order to enable efficient material distribution it is important that the material can be unloaded from the delivery truck within a distance of 50 metres of the storage / unit location and have clear, rollable access from unloading area to storage area. Onsite - Provide 30m², secure & weatherproof storage for City Lifts equipment and materials when delivered to site within 20 metres of lift shaft and located on lowest landing served, with clear and level access between unloading/ storage area and lift shaft. In the event that storage on the Site as specified above is not available, the Customer shall be liable for storage costs of $ per unit per month. Customer is responsible for all traffic control at the site during delivery of the equipment to the site. Coencement - Please note: If your site is not ready for delivery on the scheduled date of coencement ( Coencement Date ) and you do not advise City Lifts six (6) weeks prior to the Coencement Date then storage costs of $ per month per unit or pro rata for each part of a month will charged to the contract as a variation. These storage costs will continue until such time as the site is ready for delivery. AVAILABILITY OF PHONE LINE Prior to the coencement of installation, provide a dedicated analogue phone line, terminated at a final distribution point on the inside of the shaft at the top floor served within 3 metres of the controller panel. The availability of the phone-line is a very frequent cause for delays. We recoend taking special care in the timely availability of the telephone line since it is critical for receiving a safe to work certificate. In the event that the phone line is not available when required, the customer shall be liable for re-establishment costs should City Lifts have to leave and return back to site to finalise the project. The installation and on-going rental fees of the phone line shall be at the builders/clients cost. Sep-17 V0 Altivate Coercial Passenger Lifts - Technical Manual P a g e 29

30 DRAWINGS & FINISHES All buildings drawings and specifications are issued to City Lifts at time of tender acceptance (this includes door frame data sheets & architectural finishes). MISCELLANEOUS Prior to making the unit available for either the final users or for temporary use during the construction process of the building it is necessary that: o The unit is completely installed and adjusted. o The lift shaft is completely closed & waterproof. Non lift equipment must not be installed in the lift shaft without prior written permission from City Lifts. Fire detection and protection fitted in the lift shaft must be of a type that will not adversely affect the lift equipment or cause electrical hazards. Provide & install a lift car floor covering, which complies with local code regulations. All painting, including any necessary retouching, masonry and woodwork etc, not included in the contract. Protection of lift doors, architraves and lift fixtures prior to handover is not included in the contract. Provide safe access and well illuminated work areas. 31 RISKS TO BE COVERED Risk to be Covered Breakage of suspension elements Slackening of suspension elements Go past upper stop level Fall into the shaft from a stopping level Persons trapped at a service level Persons trapped in the pit, during maintenance operations Lifting more than maximum load Description In case of breakage of one of the drive chains/cables, there are additional safety cables to support the load (with adequate safety coefficients). There are electrical contacts that detect drive cable breakage and stops operation. Each drive cable has a tensioner and electrical contact detection system which would detect slackening and breakage, stopping movement. An electrical safety limit switch is provided in each upper guide section. It shuts off movement if activated when the lift car goes past the upper stop level. The shaft must be for sole use by the lift car and be fully enclosed by walls, floor and roof. Doors of proper strength have to be fitted at each landing. Also all the doors have to be equipped with mechanical engagement and electrical locking control to prevent a door from being opened when the lift is not at that level. Landing doors are provided at each service level and there is an electrical safety contact that informs of door closed status. If a door leaf opens, the circuit is broken and movement is halted. A mechanical frame locking system is provided, which prevents it from descending below a pit safety height. Access to the locking system is from the floor door and it has an electrical safety contact which prevents movement when activated. In addition, a pit button panel is supplied with a safety stop. This device is supplied, in line with standard practice in lifts, to be activated prior to access to the pit. It also comes with a pit access detection system, which comes into action if the lower level door is opened when the lift is not situated at a defined stopping level. This lock is not overridden when the power supply is shut off and restored. It is only cancelled when the panel Reset button is pressed. Locks are also provided with emergency disengagement from the interior of the shaft. The car overload device prevents the lift doors from closing while a lift is loaded beyond its rated load capacity and simultaneously sounds a warning buzzer as well as providing visual indication.
