1 SECTION VOLT ENCLOSED CONTROLLERS PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 0 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. This Section includes ac, enclosed controllers rated 600 V and less, of the following types: 1. Across-the-line, manual and magnetic controllers. 2. Reduced-voltage controllers. 3. Multispeed controllers. B. Related Sections include the following: 1. Division 26 Section 600 Volt Motor Control Centers for group mounted motor control. 2. Division 26 Section "Electrical Power Monitoring and Control" for interfacing communication and metering requirements. 3. Division 26 Section "600 Volt Variable-Frequency Motor Controllers" for generalpurpose, ac, adjustable-frequency, pulse-width-modulated controllers for use on constant torque loads in ranges up to 200 hp. 1.3 SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: For each type of enclosed controller. Include dimensions and manufacturer's technical data on features, performance, electrical characteristics, ratings, and finishes. B. Shop Drawings: For each enclosed controller. 1. Include dimensioned plans, elevations, sections, and details, including required clearances and service space around equipment. Show tabulations of installed devices, equipment features, and ratings. Include the following: a. Each installed unit's type and details. b. Nameplate legends. c. Short-circuit current rating of integrated unit. d. Features, characteristics, ratings, and factory settings of individual overcurrent protective devices in combination controllers. 600 VOLT ENCLOSED CONTROLLERS
2 2. Wiring Diagrams: Power, signal, and control wiring. C. Field quality-control test reports. D. Operation and Maintenance Data: For enclosed controllers to include in emergency, operation, and maintenance manuals. In addition provide: 1. Installation instructions. 2. Routine maintenance requirements for enclosed controllers and all installed components. 3. Manufacturer's written instructions for testing and adjusting overcurrent protective devices. E. Load-Current and List of Settings of Adjustable Overload Relays: Compile after motors have been installed and arrange to demonstrate that dip switch settings for motor running overload protection suit actual motor to be protected. F. Spare Parts: Source and current prices of replacement parts and supplies. 1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Manufacturer Qualifications: A qualified manufacturer. Maintain, within 100 miles (160 km) of Project site, a service center capable of providing training, parts, and emergency maintenance and repairs. B. Source Limitations: Obtain enclosed controllers of a single type through one source from a single manufacturer. C. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70, Article 100, by a testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction, and marked for intended use. D. Comply with NFPA DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Handle motor controllers according to NECA 230, Selecting, Installing and Maintaining Electric Motors and Motor Controllers and manufacturer s written instructions. B. Store enclosed controllers indoors in clean, dry space with uniform temperature to prevent condensation. Protect enclosed controllers from exposure to dirt, fumes, water, corrosive substances, and physical damage. C. If stored in areas subject to weather, cover enclosed controllers to protect them from weather, dirt, dust, corrosive substances, and physical damage. Remove loose packing and flammable materials from inside controllers; install electric heating of sufficient wattage to prevent condensation. 600 VOLT ENCLOSED CONTROLLERS
3 1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Interruption of Existing Electrical Service: Do not interrupt electrical service to facilities occupied by Owner or others unless permitted under the following conditions and then only after arranging to provide temporary electrical service according to requirements indicated: 1. Notify Owner s Representative no fewer than ten days in advance of proposed interruption of electrical service. 2. Indicate method of providing temporary utilities. 3. Do not proceed with interruption of electric service without written permission from Owner s Representative. B. Product Selection for Restricted Space: Drawings indicate maximum dimensions for enclosed controllers, minimum clearances between enclosed controllers, and for adjacent surfaces and other items. Comply with indicated maximum dimensions and clearances. 1.7 COORDINATION A. Coordinate layout and installation of enclosed controllers with other construction including conduit, piping, equipment, and adjacent surfaces. Maintain required workspace clearances and required clearances for equipment access doors and panels. B. Coordinate size and location of concrete bases. Cast anchor-bolt inserts into bases. Concrete, reinforcement, and formwork requirements are specified in Division 03 Section "Cast-in-Place Concrete." C. Coordinate installation of roof curbs, equipment supports, and roof penetrations. These items are specified in Division 07 Section "Roof Accessories." PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide products by one of the following: 1. Eaton Corporation; Cutler-Hammer Products. 2. Rockwell Automation; Allen-Bradley Co.; Industrial Control Group. 3. Square D, Division of Schneider Electric. 600 VOLT ENCLOSED CONTROLLERS
4 2.2 ACROSS-THE-LINE ENCLOSED CONTROLLERS A. Manual Controller: NEMA ICS 2, general purpose, Class A, with "quick-make, quickbreak" toggle or pushbutton action, and marked to show whether unit is "OFF," "ON," or "TRIPPED." 1. Overload Relay: Ambient-compensated type with inverse-time-current characteristics and NEMA ICS 2, Class 10 tripping characteristics. Relays shall have heaters and sensors in each phase, matched to nameplate, full-load current of specific motor to which they connect and shall have appropriate adjustment for duty cycle. B. Magnetic Controller: NEMA ICS 2, Class A, full voltage, reversing or nonreversing, across the line, as indicated. 1. Control Circuit: 120 V; obtained from integral control power transformer with a control power transformer of sufficient capacity to operate connected pilot, indicating and control devices, plus 100 percent spare capacity. 2. In addition to the hold-in contact, provide one normally open contact. 3. Solid State Overload Relay: as indicated. a. Dip switch selectable trip class, 10, 20, 30 tripping characteristic. b. Manual and automatic reset, selectable. c. Phase loss protection. d. Phase imbalance protection. e. Ground-fault and jam protection. f. Visual trip indication. g. Thermal memory circuit to model the heating and cooling effects of motor on and off periods. h. Dedicated door mounted operator-interface: Mounted in controller door and connected to indicate overload trip, overload warning and allows overload reset without opening door. 4. Overload pilot light: Amber LED push-to-test pilot light indicating overload trip. 5. Overload reset located on outside of the unit door. 6. Interposing relay: To operate Size 5 and larger contactors. C. Combination Magnetic Controller: Factory-assembled combination controller and disconnect switch. 1. Circuit-Breaker Disconnecting Means: NEMA AB 1, motor-circuit protector with field-adjustable, short-circuit trip coordinated with motor locked-rotor amperes. 2. Short Circuit Current Rating: Equal to or greater than indicated available symmetrical fault current. 3. Auxiliary Contacts: 1 normally open, internally mounted. 4. Terminal Cover: Removable protective barrier on line terminals. 600 VOLT ENCLOSED CONTROLLERS
5 2.3 REDUCED-VOLTAGE ENCLOSED CONTROLLERS A. Wye-Delta Controller: NEMA ICS 2, closed transition with adjustable time delay. 2.4 MULTISPEED ENCLOSED CONTROLLERS A. Multispeed Enclosed Controller: Match controller to motor type, application, and number of speeds; include the following accessories: 1. Control Circuit: 120 V; obtained from integral control power transformer with a control power transformer of sufficient capacity to operate connected pilot, indicating and control devices, plus 100 percent spare capacity. 2. In addition to the hold-in contact, provide one normally open contact. 3. Solid State Overload Relay: as indicated. a. Dip switch selectable trip class, 10, 20, 30 tripping characteristic. b. Decelerating relay to ensure automatically timed deceleration through each speed. 2.5 ENCLOSURES A. Description: Surface-mounting cabinets as indicated. 1. Indoor, Dry Locations: UL50, NEMA 250, Type Outdoor Locations: UL50, NEMA 250, Type 3R. 3. Wash-Down Areas: UL50, NEMA 250, Type 4X, stainless steel. 4. Other Wet or Damp, Indoor Locations: UL 50, NEMA 250, Type Indoor Locations Subject to Dust, Falling Dirt, and Dripping Noncorrosive Liquids: NEMA 250, Type Hazardous Areas Indicated on Drawings: Class 2, Div 1, UL50, NEMA 250, Type 9; Class 2, Div 2, UL50, NEMA 250, Type VOLT ENCLOSED CONTROLLERS
6 2.6 ACCESSORIES A. Devices shall be factory installed in controller enclosure, unless otherwise indicated. B. Push-Button Stations, Pilot Lights, and Selector Switches: NEMA ICS 2, heavy-duty type. C. Control Relays: Auxiliary and adjustable time-delay relays. 2.7 NAMEPLATES A. Engraved, Laminated Acrylic Label: Manufacturer s standard master and unit nameplates. B. Black letters on white background. C. Text as indicated. 2.8 FACTORY FINISHES A. Finish: Manufacturer's standard paint applied to factory-assembled and -tested enclosed controllers before shipping. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Examine areas and surfaces to receive enclosed controllers for compliance with requirements, installation tolerances, and other conditions affecting performance. B. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. 3.2 INSTALLATION A. Install motor controllers according to NECA 230 and manufacturers written instructions. B. For control equipment at walls, bolt units to wall or mount on lightweight structural-steel channels bolted to wall. For controllers not at walls, provide freestanding racks complying with Division 26 Section "Hangers and Supports for Electrical Systems." C. Install freestanding equipment on concrete bases, where indicated on Project Drawings. D. Comply with mounting and anchoring requirements specified in Division 26 Section "Hangers and Supports for Electrical Systems." 600 VOLT ENCLOSED CONTROLLERS
7 E. Enclosed Controller Fuses: Install fuses in each fusible switch. Comply with requirements in Division 26 Section "Fuses." 3.3 CONCRETE BASES A. Coordinate size and location of concrete bases. B. Concrete base is specified in Division 26 Section "Hangers and Supports for Electrical Systems," and concrete materials and installation requirements are specified in Division IDENTIFICATION A. Identify enclosed controller, components, and control wiring according to Division 26 Section "Identification for Electrical Systems." B. Phase identification shall be A-B-C, left to right, front to back, top to bottom as viewed from the front. 3.5 WIRING INSTALLATION A. Install wiring between enclosed controllers according to Division 26 Section "600 Volt Electrical Power Conductors and Cables." B. Bundle, train, and support wiring in enclosures. C. Connect hand-off-automatic switch and other automatic-control devices where applicable. 1. Connect selector switches to bypass only manual- and automatic-control devices that have no safety functions when switch is in hand position. 2. Connect selector switches with enclosed controller circuit in both hand and automatic positions for safety-type control devices such as low- and highpressure cutouts, high-temperature cutouts, and motor overload protectors. 3.6 CONNECTIONS A. Raceway or cable tray installation requirements are specified in other Division 26 Sections. Drawings indicate general arrangement of raceway or cable tray, fittings, and specialties. B. Ground equipment according to Division 26 Section "Grounding and Bonding for Electrical Systems." 600 VOLT ENCLOSED CONTROLLERS
8 3.7 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Prepare for acceptance tests as follows: 1. Test insulation resistance for each enclosed controller element, bus, component, connecting supply, feeder, and control circuit. 2. Test continuity of each circuit. 3. Report results in writing. B. Perform the following field tests and inspections and prepare test reports: 1. Perform each electrical test and visual and mechanical inspection, except optional tests, stated in NETA Acceptance Testing Standard, "Motor Control - Motor Starters." Certify compliance with test parameters. 2. Verify overload and overcurrent protection ratings correct for load. 3. Correct malfunctioning units on-site, where possible, and retest to demonstrate compliance; otherwise, replace with new units and retest. C. Infrared Scanning: After Substantial Completion, but not more than 60 days after Final Acceptance, perform an infrared scan of each enclosed controller. 1. Use an infrared-scanning device designed to measure temperature or detects significant deviations from normal values. Provide documentation of device calibration. 2. Perform 2 follow-up infrared scans of enclosed controller, one at 4 months and the other at 11 months after Substantial Completion. 3. Prepare a certified report identifying enclosed controller checked and describing results of scanning. Include notation of deficiencies detected, remedial action taken, and scanning observations after remedial action. 3.8 ADJUSTING A. Set field-adjustable switches and circuit-breaker trip ranges as indicated or per manufacturer s documentation. B. Set adjustable overload relays to Trip Class 10, manual reset and trip current based on manufacturer recommendations and motor nameplate data. 3.9 LABELING A. On satisfactory completion of tests and related effort, apply a label to tested components indicating test results, date and responsible organization and person. 600 VOLT ENCLOSED CONTROLLERS
9 3.10 CLEANING A. On completion of installation, inspect interior and exterior of motor control center. Remove paint splatters and other spots. Vacuum dirt and debris; do not use compressed air to assist in cleaning. Repair exposed surfaces to match original finish. END OF SECTION VOLT ENCLOSED CONTROLLERS
