7 Introduction A door module is an assembly of components that operates the door s electronic and mechanical functionalities. It consists of a metal or plastic carrier substrate to which a variety of sub-assemblies can be mounted such as latches, window regulators, motors, speakers, wiring harnesses and switches which will then be assembled into the front and rear doors for vehicles. Car doors are becoming slimmer to provide more cabin space. This trend has caused a substantial increase in demand for smaller and lighter power window motors. In fact, space limitations inside the door make narrow drive units imperative. As new cars are increasingly fitted with remote control, automatic operation and other value-added power window functions, more cars require anti-pinch protection systems. This means that there is a growing trend for smart motors with built-in circuit controls. 8 For the purposes of these forecasts, a door module typically consists of a rubber-sealed carrier plate made from plastic or metal. A variety of door components - such as the window lift mechanism, locks, electric motor to operate the wing mirror, wiring harness, various switches, loud speaker and a cable that connects the latch to the inner release handle - are then fitted onto the carrier, forming a cassette. The carrier plate is then tested and sealed to the outer door. Page 8

9 PESTER analysis Political While the trend for doors is strongly towards modular and lightweight designs, we see a number of other trends emerging in the automotive door market today. Firstly, plastic door module products will certainly become more prevalent in the drive for weight saving. There is also a growing requirement to address global markets with modular solutions even at the product level. The different functional requirements of world regions can make this a challenge for suppliers without the necessary system or global supply experience. Finally, vehicle crash management is also leading to changes in the door structure with one leading European platform recently raising the load specification of the door waist beam by XX percent. This increased reinforcement dramatically reduces the packaging space available for door components at a time when the growing functionality is driving product size up. Economic While more and more electronics are packed inside car doors, automakers are increasingly outsourcing their requirements for door modules. In outsourcing a door module, an automaker could typically gain in the region of X - XX percent weight savings, 1X percent for parts and XX - XX percent in cost savings. Of course, the actual cost saving depends on the vehicle programme and materials used in the module, i.e. a steel door module carrier is typically cheaper than a plastic one. There are two different architectures for an electric door system: centralised and decentralised. A centralised system normally has one centre module that controls and drives every load in all doors. 10 Companies Aisin Seiki Co., Ltd. Aisin Seiki has a wholly-owned subsidiary in Brazil to oversee the operation of its local factory. The company has invested some JPYX.Xbn in the subsidiary, Aisin Automobile Ltda, which is located in Sao Paulo state. The factory is producing automotive parts such as door frames and seats. The company supplies to a wide range of OEM customers, but historically Toyota Group has been its major customer. Brose Fahrzeugteile GmbH & Co.KG Brose s mechatronic components and systems for vehicles include: Brose's door business develops and manufactures door systems, window regulators, closure systems, drives and electronic control units. Its door products range from the door system with metal carrier through integrated plastic carrier systems to almost the complete door, including frame, seal and glass. Manual and power seat systems; Cooling fan and ventilation motors; Drives/actuators for heating and air conditioning, automated manual transmission, ABS, electric steering, window regulators and air suspension units; Closing systems for side doors, liftgates and sliding doors; Drives for sunroofs, electric parking brakes and seatbelt retractors; Drives for seatbelt carriers and sunblinds; Door systems with functional carrier made of steel, aluminium or plastic; Door control units and window regulator electronics. Brose employs over XX,XXX people in the following locations. Brose's plant in Coventry, UK supplies Jaguar Land Rover with seat systems and window regulators. Bose s plants in Ostrava and Wuppertal also produce closure systems for Jaguar Land Rover; Tondela supplies drives for liftgates and trunk lids, and Würzburg produces cooling fan modules. Page 10

11 Market shares Global Brose s dominance of the door module market is reflected in the global market where it controlled a XX% share in 2014, followed by Inteva Products and Magna. Despite a relatively short history as Inteva Products LLC, the company has roots in the automotive supply industry reaching back many decades and the company has continued to expand both organically and through the major acquisition of the then ArvinMeritor s body systems business in January 2011.This acquisition of ArvinMeritor s body systems business enabled Inteva to strengthen its position as a global supplier of door systems and latching systems while expanding its product expertise to include roof systems, motors and electronics. The company claims to have an advantage by having more product lines and more products than competitors, enabling it to provide more options for customers and more packaged solutions. In March 2015, Inteva Products acquired majority ownership in Korean Door Systems (KDS), its joint venture with SL Corp. Aisin do Brasil aims to boost its sales to YENXbn by fiscal 2015 by increasing the number of the Aisin do Brasil employees from the current XX to XXX (projected for fiscal 2015). Page 11

12 Technologies The Brose door system divides the vehicle door into a wet and dry area. The dry side of the door houses the electric and electronic components, while the mechanical components are installed in the wet side, thus eliminating the need for all further steps to seal the inner door panel. The design principle developed by Brose is now recognised as a technical standard worldwide. Brose currently offers a number of modular side doors and litigates, including: Door system with frame this combines the main components of the vehicle door on one carrier module: window regulator, glass, latch, cable harness, electronic control unit, loudspeaker and seals; Steel functional carriers door system with functional carriers made of steel can be used in different car models. They play a major role in enhancing the strength of the door and subsequently, crash safety. By reducing the thickness of the panel, Brose estimates weight savings of almost XX% can be achieved; Plastic functional carrier a door system with a fibreglass-reinforced plastic functional carrier integrates window regulator rails, loudspeaker frame, inner handle, fixing elements for cables and other components onto the module carrier. Brose points out that, compared to steel carrier modules, weight savings of Xkg can be achieved. Despite its lightweight design, Brose says this door system meets the safety requirements stipulated in the side door crash test; Modular liftgate this includes the frame, glass and functional components. It can be optionally supplied with inner trim and painted body shell. In 1963, Brose began mass-production of electric window regulators for the European market. The BMW XXXX CS coupé was the first vehicle to be equipped with this product. Since then, a number of innovations have been added to power windows including anti-pinch and one-touch operation. 14 Door module cassettes Automakers are increasingly outsourcing their requirements for larger complex modules and systems, including doors. A door module typically consists of a rubber-sealed carrier plate made from plastic or metal. A variety of door components - such as the window lift mechanism, locks, electric motor to operate the wing mirror, wiring harness, various switches, loud speaker and a cable that connects the latch to the inner release handle - are then fitted onto the carrier, forming a cassette. Brose's plastic door system Brose has developed a plastic door system made out of long glass fibre reinforced polypropylene. This module achieves weight savings of up to X kilograms compared with traditional variants. Brose points out that its new material allows the integration of window regulator rails, inner handles, loudspeaker frames, fixing elements for cables and other components in the module carrier. In July 2010, Brose received an innovation award from the Chinese journal, Automobile & Parts, for this system. Ford's door edge protector Ford has introduced a new feature designed to prevent dents and scratches, which have become a costly fact of life in Europe, home to some of the world's narrowest streets and tightest parking spaces. Its so-called Door Edge Protector debuted in January 2012 on the Ford Focus. The system - designed by Ford engineers in Cologne, Germany - works automatically when the door is opened. A protective flap concealed in the door moves into position in a fraction of a second as the door opens providing a buffer that prevents damage to paint and body work. Ford's Door Edge Protector offers a defence against damage for these car owners by fully extending into its protective position at a door opening gap of less than XXXmm. The feature defends against more than XX% of variously positioned obstructions to the front doors and XX% at the rear doors. The Door Edge Protector retracts in a split second to allow for doors being slammed shut and includes a clutch mechanism that prevents damage if the flap is obstructed when returning. Page 15
