9 Introduction The fascia (or dashboard) and the instrument cluster together form the instrument panel. The instrument panel is a complex system of coverings, foams, plastics and metals designed to house various components and act as a safety device for the vehicle occupants. Instrument panels are usually made of injection moulded thermoplastics. The area directly in front of the driver and front-seat passenger is commonly referred to as the cockpit. It is an area that continues to expand. A cockpit is a combination made out of an instrument panel and a number of sub-modules such as wiring and electronic devices, instruments, car audio and information/ communication, heating and climate systems. The number of instruments has increased over the years as vehicles have become more complex and the instruments themselves have become cheaper. Few cars in the 1960s had a tachometer but it is now almost a universal fitting. Similarly, legislation has now made the use of tachographs obligatory in trucks. The big increase, however, has been in event-controlled indications, such as lights which actuate to show warnings for indicators, low oil pressure and high lighting beam. A typical car now would have two large instruments showing speed and engine revolutions plus two smaller instruments showing engine temperature and fuel gauge. All other instruments are either incorporated in the larger instruments (odometer and trip meter) or separated from the main cluster and displayed as event warnings. Although there can be no doubt that drivers of the future will be better informed with a raft of new instrumentation, there is some concern as to whether their instrument panels will be a safe place to deliver the information. 11 PESTER analysis Political Escalating fuel prices has triggered the need to provide the driver with more information. For example, Johnson Controls is supplying Ford with its so-called SmartGauge with EcoGuide reconfigurable instrument cluster for the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan hybrid sedans. The instrument cluster offers four levels of information which can be customised to suit the driver s needs or situation. Johnson Controls states: The vehicle s long-term fuel efficiency can be displayed in two ways either as a traditional chart or using an innovative display that shows growing leaves and vines on the right side of the cluster. The more efficient a driver is, the more lush, green and beautiful the leaves and vines, creating a visual reward for the individual s efforts. Economic As the premium OEMs expand their presence in China, for example, they bring more luxury to that developing market of consumers. The interiors of the cars sold in these developing markets will closely follow the price point of the vehicle. As the status of the middle class develops, more expensive vehicles will be obtainable. The infrastructure needs and other regulatory issues, such as safety, will also be key drivers in how soon the consumers in those countries will be driving a vehicle comparable to that found in the developed markets. China is essentially there; the domestic OEMs are racing to upgrade their interiors in an effort to make them comparable to those offered by the global OEMs building cars in the country. The increasing fitment of sophisticated mobile multimedia systems, as well as safety and security items suggests that this part of the interior is still in its infancy in terms of development. 12 Companies Robert Bosch GmbH Bosch designed the instrument cluster for the BMW ix. It incorporates a dual-processor architecture, with one processing unit dedicated to handling the graphics and the other for the remaining functions. A level of computing power was chosen that additionally allows the electronics of a head-up display to be controlled via the instrument cluster. Data connectivity is provided by two bus systems: CAN (Controller Area Network) and MOST (Media Oriented Systems Transport). The TFT display is covered with an optically bonded pane of mineral glass, similar to that used on smartphones and tablet PCs. In 2012, Bosch China Investment acquired a majority shareholding in the joint venture of Chery and Atech Australia, based in Wuhu, China. The purchase price was not be disclosed. The joint venture develops, manufactures and sells instrument clusters and car infotainment systems. With the acquisition, Bosch s Car Multimedia division has strengthened its position in the Asian market. Bosch holds a XX%, while Chery and Atech holds a XX% and XX% stake, respectively. Bosch is supplying the instrument cluster for the Audi TT. A display-based instrument cluster replaces the previous technology and bundles all of the instrument, navigation, and multimedia information in the driver's field of vision. Audi calls this driver-oriented concept the 'Virtual Cockpit'. The Audi TT comes with two basic display modes. The traditional mode shows large, digitally produced round gages - but there are no mechanical pointers or other moving parts. The second mode trims down the virtual round speedometer and tachometer and shifts them to the lower corners, leaving room for a large navigation display, music selections or telephone connections. The instrument cluster is connected via CAN (controller area network) and MOST (media-oriented systems transport) buses. Page 12

13 Markets Market trends As the information flood spills out of the home and office into the vehicle, there is a danger of overloading the driver. Manufacturers report that, besides the traditional information available, additional safety-related systems such as camera and sensor-based messages are becoming more relevant, recognised and valued by the end consumer. Given that the area in front of the driver is limited, cockpit designers must determine how the information should be broken down between a cluster location, centre stack, head-up display and rear-view mirror. The desire for a spacious interior, something always equated with luxury, is prompting interior designers to use new combinations of electronics and mechanical functions to modify or move pre-existing systems like heating/cooling and audio facilities. In terms of controls, touch screens offer space-saving possibilities, but designers are faced with the problem of distracting the driver s attention too much. Although the touch screen is not new, its application for a centre stack display is one way to improve the human-machine interface. Some midrange models include touch screens, too. For example, the redesigned entry-level VW Golf Mark VII comes equipped with a 'Composition Media' system that includes a X.X-inch colour touch screen, DAB digital radio, CD player, MDI interface (for ipod or MPX player), Bluetooth telephone preparation and audio streaming and eight speakers. Displays are advancing in other ways, too. Jaguar s concept car, C-XF, offers driver and front-seat passengers the opportunity to see an entirely different image on the car s display. The technology, supplied by Alpine, allows passengers to watch a DVD or game whilst the driver can only see the navigation. Some designers are looking to voice recognition devices to enable them to eliminate many controls that have traditionally been manually operated. Page 13

Yazaki and Freescale's instrument cluster development platform Yazaki North America has developed an instrument cluster prototype for reconfigurable display applications. Yazaki developed the instrument cluster platform in technology partnership with Freescale Semiconductor. The platform is powered by Freescale s MPCXXXXe system-on-chip processor which is designed to provide feature-rich user interfaces. The partners point out that the instrument cluster development platform is designed to enable three-dimensional graphics within a single LCD screen. The company states: The integration of an LCD in a typical automotive cluster often results in a flat, 2D monitor appearance. By displaying information like indicators, fuel gauge and speedometer on different levels, and adding tunnels an a tapered bezel over the LCD, Yazaki provides a HMI with multilevel XD-like information that appeals to today s drivers. Outsourced cockpits Since the early 1990s, there has been a gradual increase in the average value of outsourced modules as more complex modules and systems are outsourced. The extent of outsourcing of interior modules and systems varies by product line. Page 15

Delphi develops its MyFi Delphi has been developing its MyFi family of products designed to enable vehicle manufacturers to offer infotainment solutions that address the increasing connectivity requirements of consumers. By offering implementation of features such as Bluetooth, WiFi, cellular connectivity, natural voice recognition, hands-free system operation and audio streaming, Delphi claims that its MyFi integrated infotainment products provide the right level of connectivity for each specific application. Delphi says its MyFi can help duplicate the driver s smart phone's display in your vehicle and even recognise that the vehicle is low on fuel and automatically direct the driver to the nearest and lowest-cost petrol station. Display technologies from Bosch Bosch has developed display technologies allowing instruments to be developed that eliminate mechanical indicators, with the displays presenting driver-relevant information in a variety of ways. For instance, based on graphics or moving images from a video camera. Bosch is also working on developing XD displays and XD HMI (human machine interface) solutions that enhance the driving experience, using spatial effects to present information. Head-up displays allow important information to be projected onto the windshield, so that drivers do not need to take their eyes off the road ahead. Bosch says it is combining head-up displays with its new visualisation methods that are based on augmented reality technology. Bosch reckons that this is a particularly good way of projecting information so that it exactly overlays the image that the eye or a camera captures of the driving situation. Page 16
