2 ABOUT The Stop Community Food Centre s Night Market is a teeming feast for the eyes, belly, and heart. The Stop s Night Market is a captivating mash up of the best of Toronto s street food and art, and offers Torontonians a unique chance to experience a unique space like they ve never seen it before. Inspired by night markets from around the world, The Stop s Night Market transforms an unlikely lot into a tantalizing feast for the senses over two summer nights in June, featuring over 70 chefs and 35 one-of-a-kind food carts created by local designers. Held for the first time in 2012, Toronto Life named The Stop s Night Market as Reason No. 5 in their Reasons to Love Toronto. BlogTO has called the fundraising event quite possibly the nicest, best catered summer soiree in the city. In 2016, the event was a huge success and raised over $215,000 for The Stop Community Food Centre s critical food access and community-building programs. 3 DETAILS Designers who are interested in fabricating food carts are asked to submit a proposal based on the guidelines outlined in this Design Manual and as described in the Design Brief (page 5). Designers are asked to submit the following: Application Form (online here: Design Proposal: A pdf document, no larger than 5MB, which includes: - your group name - team member names - a sketch of your cart, which exemplifies the parameters and dimensions set out in the Design Manual - a brief description (max. 250 words) of the idea, inspiration, and how it relates to The Stop s mission The pdf should be named as follows: nameofgroup_nmdesignproposal_2017.pdf Please upload via the online form. 4 WHY GET INVOLVED To help raise money for The Stop s integral food access and community-building initiatives. To be affiliated with and support an innovative, established, and well-respected not-for-profit organization from Toronto. To gain exposure and publicity at an event with over 3,000 people and the reach of over 10 million media impressions and close to 3 million social media impressions. To gain potential media exposure on blogs, TV, and publications such as The Globe and Mail, DesignLines, Macleans, Blog TO, City TV, Toronto Life, and many more. To to get involved in an innovative event that bridges creatives in food, design, performance, and graphic art. To secure up to 5 complimentary tickets for the members of your group to attend the event. To have your team name and link placed on the dedicated event website and mentioned on our social media channels (over 20,000 followers in total). 4

5 DESIGN BRIEF For two nights, the city s top chefs and designers will draw inspiration from both Toronto s multicultural neighbourhoods and the world to capture the global essence of street foods, design, and lifestyles. Imagine the bustling streets of Mumbai, the blinking lanterns of Hanoi, the explosive aromatic spices of an Iranian market. We ask you to find your core inspiration through The Stop s mission statement and philosophy: The Stop strives to increase access to healthy food in a manner that maintains dignity, builds health and community, and challenges inequality. The theme for your cart design should focus on using food as a tool and how it can help build a community and create change. We always encourage our designers to plan or imagine a second life for their cart. We urge you to read about The Stop and visit thestop.org for inspiration. An emphasis on sustainable and reclaimed materials is essential. 5

7 GENERAL PARAMETERS The design focus should be on sustainability (i.e. reclaimed, recycled material). Carts must be functional, operational, and able to withstand weight on top surface (keep in mind this is an outdoor event and subject to inclement weather such as high winds, rain, high temperatures). Materials should be fire-retardant and water durable. Counter surface cannot conduct heat. No metal tops. No built-up ledges on counter surface. Workable material for counter surface (i.e. no corrugated counter surface). Carts must have some kind of wheel system for easy moving, with brake system. Carts must be moveable by labour of 2-3 people. Please consider how you will be transporting your cart to and from the event. Signage is mandatory and must be in visible area; at top of the canopy, or additional structure that is at least 6ft high. (see Signage Parameters, page 9) Canopy is mandatory and should be detachable for easy moving. Must be solid for total coverage. There will be no access to electrical outlets. Please do not base your design on needing access to power. Sunset occurs during the second half of the evening. Feel free to incorporate a lighting element into your cart! 7

9 SIGNAGE PARAMETERS NAME OF DESIGNER & RESTAURANT MENU Designer & Restaurant signage must be: - Within 6-0 to 7-6 high by max 6-0 wide - Durable material (i.e not paper) - Legible typeface from 4 away - Written as: Designer X presents X restaurant - Must use restaurant logo or typeface - Designer logo or name should not distract from restaurant signage, +/- 12 wide max. Menu Signage must be: - Within 3-2 to Durable Material (i.e. not paper) - Legible typeface from 4 away PLEASE NOTE: Designers must create Menu & Name of restaurant signage that can be used for two vendors on either night (i.e. two separate signs that can be changed, or chalkboard signage, etc ) 9 PLAQUE Plaque Signage must be: - Under Designer name & max. 250 word concept description - Max. 8.5 x 11 - Must be detachable

10 AWARDS & RECOGNITION Each year ALL carts used at The Stop s Night Market are entered into a design competition in recognition of your creativity. Four awards will be presented in the following categories: Big Picture (best representation of The Stop s vision / mission) Most Creative Best In Show People s Choice Award An independent jury will select the award winners. Last year s jury included Alex Bozikovic, architecture critic at The Globe & Mail, David Liss, Curator & Advisor at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Casey Mecija, multidisciplinary artist, musician, and host of The Doc Project on CBC Radio One and renowned artist, Vivek Shraya. The People's Choice Award is selected online via The Stop Community Food Centre Facebook Page. 11 IMPORTANT INFO All design teams are responsible for delivering the cart on the day of the event at the alloted scheduled time, as well as removing the cart at the end of the second night. Any carts not removed at the end of the second night will be removed with hired help and the design team will be charged. (Credit card numbers will be compiled once design teams are selected.) Due to space limitations, The Stop will be not be taking donated carts after the event (due to this, we cannot give design teams tax receipts for building materials). If selected, you will execute your cart, which will be used by chefs and wineries on both nights of the event.
