Her diverse sounds is nature's symphony, sprinkle delight, with comfort of ocean breeze which needs no attest.. The unique every moment of soul's revival and its sun to shine... ~ Oksana Rus Outdoor activities, vacations, heat domes and 100 degree days it must be summertime in Oklahoma. Our Section s annual summer picnic was enjoyed not only by our Members but guests from the Eastern Oklahoma Section as well as National MBCA president, Terry Kiwala. A beautiful array of Mercedes-Benz circled the pavilion at Hafer Park where we enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs, cold drinks and ice cream. The event marked the Terry s fifth visit to our Section and we will be honored with his return for our upcoming car show. Speaking of the car show, please mark your calendars for Saturday, September 30, for this year s show. The show is returning to the Boathouse District again sponsoring Sunbeam Family Services. Please use the Registration Form on page 6. The Boathouse District is a beautiful venue so please plan to include your Mercedes-Benz in the show whether for judging, display only or for Silver Star Preservation certification. Jim Priest, CEO of Sunbeam, will be our speaker at our August meeting. Jim will update us on Sunbeam s efforts in fulfilling their mission of assisting children, families and seniors in our community. Watch for news for the date and time of our September tour of the Sunbeam headquarters and residential service facility. I encourage each Member to consider including Sunbeam as part of your annual personal charitable giving. Beginning with the August meeting, information will be available on contribution opportunities for you to consider. 3 Newsletter Editor Wanted Mercedes-Benz Club of Central Oklahoma is looking for a volunteer to take over the editorial responsibilities of the Section Newsletter the Sooner Star News. As the terms of current Section Officers and half of the Board Members are coming to an end in 2018, the Section leadership is actively looking for dedicated Members/Associate Members to fill in these positions including that of the Newsletter Editor. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat is essential. Please contact Masood Khan at central.ok.mbca@gmail.com July Dinner Meeting at Stella By Bill Nash Our July dinner meeting was a hit in a new venue in OKC Midtown, Stella Modern Italian Cuisine. The restaurant even provided a custom menu, which included the Club name and Mercedes-Benz logo. We had 36 members and guests in attendance. Our featured speaker was Ward 6 City Councilwoman Meg Salyer. Meg is an annual guest and she keeps us apprised of Oklahoma City news. The main topic this year is the approval of the new convention center and Scissortail Park. In September citizens will be asked to approve a new one cent tax which will be used to fund improvement of city streets and fund new police and fire positions. Interestingly, Meg is also a car enthusiast and will soon be driving her Aston Martin down the west coast from Seattle to Monterrey to attend the Pebble Beach Concours. President Woods reviewed plans for our upcoming car show and noted that President Kiwala plans to attend. He also discussed the Mercedes Ladies Bunco outing on Tuesday, 7/25, and the possible road trip to Bentonville, Arkansas in November to visit the Crystal Bridge Museum and other local attractions. President s Message continued Also, save the date of November 11, for our fall driving event to Crystal Bridges in Bentonville, AR. This will be an overnight event with other points of interest available to see during this trip. Many Members have indicated their interest in participating autumn in the Ozarks weekend. More to come on details of this driving event. Don t forget, we re on Facebook Oklahoma-Section/
4 June 2017 Picnic at Hafer Park By Bill Nash Our Saturday, June 17 th get-together was also made special by the fourteen members of the Eastern Oklahoma Section who joined the twenty-one members of our Section. Our President, Charles Woods, and Eastern Oklahoma Section Vice President, John Kushnerick, each said a few words of welcome to the attendees. We certainly appreciated the Eastern Section members that caravanned from Tulsa and made the effort to find Hafer Park in Edmond. In spite of the warm summer weather, the pavilion in Hafer Park is shady with a light, constant breeze. The venue also is perfect for checking out each other s fine automobiles, parked in a circle around the pavilion. The guest of honor for our June picnic meeting was National President Terry Kiwala. Terry provided brief remarks and advised that he would join us for our annual car show Classics on the River in September. All we had to do was reacquaint ourselves with fellow Mercedes lovers and make a few new friends. It didn t hurt to have a nice catered spread of hamburgers, hot dogs and smoked sausages, and potato salad, followed by ice cream cups. The goal of what has become a summer tradition is a relaxed opportunity to share our love of Mercedes automobiles and make new friends. We want to thank Kenny Hoffman and Mike Dippel for these great photos. 4

8 Gayle s 350SL By Gayle Welcher I saw it in New York City in I was in town on business and was driving by the Plaza Hotel on a rain slick night when I saw a SL Mercedes parked in front of the hotel. I couldn t help myself it was so beautiful. It was the first thing I truly wanted. I immediately called a friend of mine in Houston and told him I wanted that car. After some research, he called me back and said he found one in Ft. Worth. I immediately called the dealer, bought the car over the phone, flew from New York to Texas and drove it back to Norman, Oklahoma. The banker who transferred the money for the payment told me it was the most expensive car he had ever seen. It was $11, The way it made me smile priceless. I have owned and enjoyed this car ever since. Picnic pictures continued 8
9 Mercedes Ladies Bunco Night, July 25, 2017 By Pat Nash The second Mercedes Ladies Night out was a Bunco night, with a great deal of conversation and laughter. We had one instructor and six eager students ready to re-learn this simple dice game. Our hostess was Farah Masood, and a tasty meal was provided by her husband the Chef. We had so much fun talking and getting to know each other over dinner that we considered not playing Bunco. Reason won out, as we had already planned to enjoy a competitive evening. The play became so heated (ask Farah to tell you how to roll a six ten times in a row!) and loud, it s a good thing they don t have close neighbors. We did not discuss cars, not once, but did toss around ideas for future events. We would certainly welcome more participation from the membership as well as suggestions for more fun times. 9

12 Daimler News Record Sales & Revenue Stuttgart, Germany - Daimler AG continued along its successful growth path in the first half of 2017 and set new records for unit sales and revenue in the second quarter. In the months of April through June, Daimler sold 822,500 cars and commercial vehicles worldwide (+8%), which is another record for unit sales. Contributions to the Group s best-ever unit sales came from all automotive divisions, in particular the records set by Mercedes-Benz Cars (595,200 vehicles, +9%) and Mercedes-Benz Vans (103,400 vehicles, +4%) and the sales growth at Daimler Trucks (116,400 vehicles, +8%). Group revenue reached the best-ever figure of 41.2 billion and was thus 7% higher than in the second quarter of last year. Adjusted for exchange-rate effects, revenue increased by 5%. Mercedes-Benz to dump DTM for Formula E Mercedes-Benz has announced a strategic repositioning of its motorsport activities: the company will conclude its participation in DTM at the end of 2018 and enter Formula E in the 2019/20 seasons. This new approach will see Mercedes-Benz competing at both ends of the motorsport spectrum: in Formula 1, the pinnacle of motorsport combining high technology and the most demanding competitive challenge; and in Formula E, which embodies the transformation that is underway in the automotive industry. 300,000 th G Class Stuttgart / Graz, Austria The 300,000th vehicle of the legendary G-Class has rolled off the production line at Magna Steyr in Graz, 200 km in the south of the Austrian capital Vienna. The record vehicle is a Mercedes-Benz G500 in the color designo Mauritius blue metallic with black leather seats and contrasting white stitching (fuel consumption combined: 12.3 l/100 km; combined CO 2 emissions: 289 g/km). The legendary off-road qualities and adventurer character of the G-Class are enhanced by the Off-Road package including black 16-inch wheels with all-terrain tires and a robust roof rack. This winning combination was selected by fans of the G-Class from all over the world, who voted for their favorite specification via the official Facebook page of the G-Class ( During the next few months the anniversary vehicle will be on display on social media networks. Daimler summoned by German Government on emissions allegations The German government summoned Daimler to appear before a commission on after local media reported that prosecutors were investigating possible cheating on emissions tests. German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported on Wednesday that prosecutors were investigating two engines used in over 1 million cars sold in the U.S. and Europe. The newspaper said that state prosecutors in Stuttgart, Daimler's hometown, were leading the inquiry. The owner of Mercedes-Benz and Smart said it was cooperating fully with authorities, but declined to comment on specific accusations. The automaker added that it saw no risks that regulators might revoke approval for its vehicles. The commission that Daimler will appear before was established in 2015 to investigate Volkswagen's diesel scandal. 12
