1 EUROPE URBAN BUS MARKET OUTLOOK REPORT Current status, outlook and opportunities The Paris Agreement 2017 is a key element for the modernisation of the European industry and implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Given that the European Union (EU) is committed to transition towards a low carbon economy, public transport operators and industry are engaged in various projects to improve bus fleet and service quality. Today diesel and biodiesel buses have the majority share in bus fleet and almost 50 per cent of buses across the EU are still Euro III and older. Less than 10 per cent of the bus fleet is renewed every year. There are many new propulsion technologies (battery electric, fuel cell, etc.) but concerns about cost and service reliability have limited their deployment. Launched in 2016, the Clean Bus Deployment Initiative is the first of its kind to influence manufacturers, public transport operators, leasing companies, multilateral development banks and other funding agencies. It aims to increase the share of alternatively-fuelled buses in the bus fleet from per cent currently to 30 per cent in EU s plan to deploy at least 2,000 zero-emission buses by the end of 2019, with growing rates thereafter, represents an investment opportunity of over EUR 1 billion. Global Mass Transit has just released the first edition of the Europe Urban Bus Market Outlook Report which provides a comprehensive overview of the existing urban bus market and outline opportunities in investment based on public and private initiatives. The report also provides an analysis of the plans announced by the cities to renew and expand the existing bus fleet, bus projects and initiatives, contracts awarded, tender opportunities, financing strategies, technology innovation, growth drivers and challenges of the bus market, and recent developments.
