3 CHART 1 Gross consumption of natural gas by OECD region Billion cubic meters OECD Asia Oceania OECD Europe OECD Americas 0 Jan 15 May 15 Sep 15 Jan 16 May 16 Sep 16 Jan 17 May 17 Sep 17 Jan 18 Total OECD indigenous production of natural gas increased by 7.4% in January 2018 compared to January The increase was driven by the OECD Americas (+9.3% y o y 1 ), where production in the United States grew by 9.6% y o y. OECD Asia Oceania s growth (+26.5% y o y) was largely driven by Australia s growth of 31.5% y o y. Meanwhile, OECD Europe experienced a 6.5% y o y production decline as Netherlands output fell by 18.1% y o y. Total OECD imports (entries 2 ) of natural gas fell by 6.9% in January 2018 versus January Imports declined in all OECD regions led by OECD Europe ( 9.0% y o y), followed by the OECD Americas ( 2.8% y o y), and OECD Asia Oceania ( 1.5% y o y). The decline in OECD Europe s imports stemmed from reduced entries via Ukraine, down 43.0% y o y. Total OECD exports (exits 2 ) of natural gas fell by 4.0% in January 2018 versus January Exports grew in both the OECD Americas (+6.5% y o y) and OECD Asia Oceania (+27.2% y o y), where Australia was responsible for the latter s growth as large projects like Wheatstone LNG continued to ramp up production. Meanwhile, in OECD Europe exports declined by 11.2% y o y, partially due to reduced exports to Austria ( 40.0% y o y) and Italy ( 23.6% y o y) from neighboring OECD countries. Total OECD gross consumption of natural gas increased by 1.8% in January 2018 compared to January Consumption fell by 15.8% y o y in OECD Europe, notably due to Germany ( 24.3% y o y), Italy ( 20.8% y o y), and France ( 27.2% y o y). Consumption increased in the OECD Americas (+12.9% y o y) and OECD Asia Oceania (+9.3% y o y). The United States experienced the highest rate of growth at 14.4% or 11.8 billion cubic meters y o y as it experienced lower than average temperatures in January Year on year (y o y) change over corresponding month of previous year. 2. Transit volumes are included. Trade amounts include intra regional trade. OECD/IEA, International Energy Agency

5 NOTES Please note that all IEA data are subject to the following Terms and Conditions found on the IEA s website: 1) ESTIMATED DATA Due to the absence of official data, the following data have been estimated: Israel January 2010 to January ) COUNTRY NOTES A General Note Starting with January 2011 data, the Imports and Exports no longer represent ultimate origins and destinations but are replaced by Entries and Exits corresponding the amounts that physically crossed the national boundaries of the country. These series are subject to revisions within the following months. Australia Austria Belgium Canada The breakdown of export destinations is estimated by the IEA on the basis of OECD imports of natural gas from Australia. Most recent data are the best estimates from the Austrian national administration, based on available preliminary data. Data are usually finalised within three months following the first publication. Most recent data on origins of imports and final destinations of exports of LNG are the best estimates from the Belgian Administration based on available preliminary data. Data for Canada are submitted by the Department of Natural Resources (Natural Resources Canada, or NRCan), based on actual and preliminary data from Canada's national statistical agency (Statistics Canada) and various other sources. In cases where data from these sources are unavailable, estimates are conducted by NRCan, based on information available at the time, including alternative sources. Data are usually finalised within three months of the first publication. An important source for any differences between data published by Statistics Canada and data published by the IEA is data estimated by NRCan or the IEA Secretariat. Iceland Ireland There is no natural gas data for Iceland, as there is neither production nor consumption. As of April 2017 there is no gas stored in Ireland. Stock figures for April May 2017 refer to line pack gas. Israel Korea Mexico The statistical data for Israel are supplied by and under the responsibility of the relevant Israeli authorities. The use of such data by the OECD is without prejudice to the status of the Golan Heights, East Jerusalem and Israeli settlements in the West Bank under the terms of international law. Information is based on data published by the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources as well as the Central Bureau of Statistics. Following a change in reporting methodology, starting from January 2015 gross inland deliveries (observed) of natural gas include own use. Observed gross inland deliveries of natural gas from January 2013 onwards are estimated. Revisions are pending. United Kingdom Beginning with January 2016, exits to the Isle of Man are reported under Non Specified/Other. Prior to this date, exits to the Isle of Man were included in exits to Ireland.
