2 EVENTS CRONOLOGY On Monday 6 April 2009, h. 3:32 32 a.m. a big earth tremor with magnitude 5.8 of Richter Scale was recorded close to L Aquila. The earthquake caused 297 victims, more than 1,000 injured and about 60,000 evacuated Strada dei Parchi SpA checked: Misalignment of pulvinos supports for 40 bay of 9 viaducts with leakage and damage of the supports Discontinuation of the expansion joint with gaps of cm The reopening activities started immediately and the motorway was opened again on Friday 10 April at 5.50 p.m. From the very beginning the motorway was practicable by rescue vehicles 2

4 Activities for quick reopening of the infrastructures u A24 Section Tornimparte - L Aquila Ovest 18 hours after the earthquake Fornaca Viaduct( km ): side-slip of the embankment in correspondence of the abutments both in the left way (west carriageway, Teramo Rome) and in the right way (east carriageway, Rome Teramo). At 7.00 a.m. the motorway gradient was restored. This allowed removing the gaps/subsidences and reopening the motorway without weight and speed limits Raio and Aterno Viaducts (km ): side-slip of the embankment in correspondence of the abutments t both in the left, and in the right. At the same time, it was ordered a first temporary intervention in order to making in safe the support apparatus with proper shoring The section was opened again at p.m. of 6 April, without speed and weight limits fixed by Strada dei Parchi. However the limits are still in force for vehicles with maximum load at 7.5 t in accordance with Civil Defence orders 4

6 Activities for quick reopening of the infrastructures A24 Section L Aquila Ovest L Aquila Est Pettino Viaduct (km ), Fosso Vetoio Viaduct (km ): roadway showed light damages to the joints, so that these didn t demand reparation. An easy repositioning of the support apparatus was made and the viaducts were opened without other interventions ti Saint Sisto Viaduct ( ): in the right way, the damages have involved the joints, the support apparatus and the aseismic i checks. Some bay were heavily damagedd on the left. The piers and the foundations didn t show clear signs of instability. It was immediately decided to reopen firstly the right way The section was opened again at p.m. of 10 April, using the Saint Sisto viaduct carriageway with two-way traffic without weight limit but with speed limit fixed at 60 km/h. 8 Activities for quick reopening of the infrastructures A24 Section L Aquila Est Assergi Le Campane Viaduct (km ): the damages have involved the joints, the support apparatus and the aseismic checks. It was decided to reopen the viaduct after the repositioning of the support apparatus Palude Viaduct (km ): similar damages to the Saint Sisto viaduct. It was necessary a lifting of the support apparatus in the right way to reopen the viaduct Vigne Basse Viaduct ( ): similar damages and intervention to the Saint Sisto viaduct The section was opened again at p.m. of 10 April, using the carriageway diversion with two-way traffic and speed limit fixed at 60 km/h 3 days and 15 hours after the earthquake 8

12 Activities for quick reopening of the infrastructures A25 Section Pratola Peligna Bussi Popoli Viaductus ( ): the right way (direction Torano Pescara) was strongly damaged and complex recover interventions were needed (the section were reopened only on 05/06/09). The left way didn t show steps between bays and it was reopened only for cars in direction Pescara Rome at 4.15 AM of day 6 April. It was reopened to vehicles having weight inferior to 3.5 t at 1.00 PM of the same day. On the afternoon of Thursday 9 April the recover intervention was concluded and all weight limitations were removed. 3 days and half after the earthquake 12
