1 2018 NH Automotive Service Technology (AST) High Module School Contest Stations ON-VEHICLE or ON-VEHICLE SIMULATION WORKSTATIONS Items PROVIDED S1 Vehicle Safety Inspection Students will perform a NH Motor Vehicle Safety inspection per NH SAF-C-3200 guidelines. Students will be asked to answer questions and perform visual and operation checks to determine compliance of current standards. Inspection manual and appropriate tools. S2 Vehicle Engine Performance Diagnosis & Testing Toyota Students will diagnose and repair faults related to the engine control and emissions system. This includes drivability, MIL-ON DTC and Engine Control Module related issues. A repair order will be provided to identify the customer complaint. Students will be expected to use basic diagnostic strategies to identify root cause, read schematics/wiring diagrams, correctly connect and use test equipment. Snap-On Verus Edge Diagnostic tool will be used. 2 S3 Steering and Suspension GM Students will need to be familiar with and answer questions about steering and suspension components, tire information and wear patterns, wheel alignment procedures, printouts and diagnosis. Exhibit the ability to properly use printed reference materials and work orders/printouts. S4 Body Electrical Diagnosis and Testing GM Diagnose electrical circuits on car related to battery, starting, charging, lighting, or accessory systems. Students will be expected to read schematics, locate information in service information, correctly connect and use test equipment, and use diagnostic strategies to identify root cause. Station is bugged. Use of repair order. Snap-On Verus Edge Diagnostic tool will be used. 3 S5 Job Interview S6 Electrical / Electronic Systems White Mountains Community College Students demonstrate they can clearly and completely fill out a job application, communicate clearly and effectively and have appropriate professional behaviors during the job interview. Printed copy of resume required. Students will demonstrate proper circuit diagnosis to locate faults placed in various electrical circuits. All contestants must bring a printed copy of their resume to registration. Inductive amp probe and/or shunt may be used. Fluke 87/88 series & Snap-On EEDM604E Meters will be provided. S7 Electronic Service Information S8 Drum Brake Service & Diagnosis Toyota Students will locate specifications and other repair information using electronic service information as a resource. Students will demonstrate their ability to inspect, service, and determine necessary action related to drum brake systems. Part and component identification, inspection, measurement, diagnosis of base brake faults, disassembly and assembly may be required. ShopKey Pro (Mitchell) and/or ALLDATA Pro Service Information will be used. (Both will be available. The contestant can choose which they want to use based on their own preference) S9 STEM Challenge MEGATECH Corp. Students will demonstrate competency in basic concepts associated with hybrid vehicle technology including electric motors, capacitors, LEDs, etc. Page 3 of 7
4 S10 Engine Mechanical Service S11 Fastener/Tool Identification S12 Written Test ASE Contestants will demonstrate their knowledge of the internal combustion gasoline engine by identification of various engine components and answering questions about engine mechanical operation. Contestants will use precision measuring tools and OEM Service Information to inspect and service engine timing components. Contestants will be asked to identify various standard and metric fasteners by type, grade, major diameter, thread pitch and length. Additionally, contestants will be asked to identify common tools associated with maintenance and light repair. This 100 question written test will test the student s technical knowledge of automobile diagnosis and repair in the vehicle system specialty areas of: Engine Repair Automatic Transmission/Transaxle Manual Drive Train and Axles Suspension and Steering Brakes Electrical/Electronic Systems Heating and Air Conditioning Engine Performance Test booklet answer sheet, pencil. Notes: Students will be given 15 minutes to read information and complete each work station. 5 minutes will be added into the rotation time to reset stations and rotate student groups. A slightly longer rotation time will occur every 4th rotation to transition student groups from shop area to the written testing area. All tools and equipment will be provided. We will make the best effort to use industry standard tools except when specified above. If you wish to bring your own scan tool, rather than use what we are providing, you may do so. However, any delay caused by tool retrieval, hook up, start up, software, or hardware issues will not be considered as justification for time extension. Additionally, the storage and security of the tool while it is on our premises is your responsibility. We will provide a location for storage, but we will not be responsible for keeping track of it. If you choose this option please make certain that both the tool and its storage case is clearly marked with your school information. To be clear, Instructors will not be allowed to enter the contest area once the contest begins. The rotation schedule and number of stations may need to be adjusted depending on the final number of contestants. Page 4 of 7
