2 Course Description: This course on Electrical, Electronics and Fuels covers three main areas: The basic electrical theory and wiring diagrams, test equipment, and diagnosis/repair/replacement of batteries, starters, alternators and basic electrical accessories; The principles, systems, and procedures required for diagnosing and restoring engine performance using electrical/electronic test equipment; The principles of fuel delivery/management, exhaust/emission systems, and electronic engine controls and procedures for diagnosing and restoring engine performance using appropriate test equipment. Students must complete all assignments and lab exercises to keep up throughout all eight terms, and some independent study is recommended. Due to the high subject weight, students are urged to seek extra help if they need it. Course Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have reliably demonstrated an ability to: Diagnose, test, and repair the basic electrical components of a car, performing circuit calculations to verify Ohm s, Watts and Kirchoff s Laws with a selection of meters. Explain the purpose, function and properties of fuels and the combustion of fuels. Use meters, oscilloscopes, NGS, SBTS, and SBDS test equipment, and repair automotive electrical and electronic components and systems. Describe operation of and diagnose/repair ignition and emission control systems using appropriate test equipment and service information. Describe, diagnose, and repair engine fuel delivery/management and emission control systems using appropriate service information and diagnostic equipment. Explain the purpose, construction, principles of operation, inspection and testing for intake and exhaust systems. Explain the factors effecting cranking system operation and perform testing and diagnostic procedures. Explain the construction, principles of operation, inspection and testing of electronic devices. Explain the purpose, construction, principles of operation, inspecting and testing for charging systems and control units. Generic Skills: This course will build on the basic employment skills needed to prepare the students for entering today s work force. They will learn the proper and safe procedures for using tools and equipment related to this area of study. They will receive instruction on personal safety protocols, shop safety, and WHMIS regulations related to this area of study. Prior Learning Assessment And Recognition Process(es): Not applicable.
