2 March Creation of the Holland Community Sustainability Committee (SusCom) Provide studies & recommendations to City Council and Holland Board of Public Works regarding all things green, which includes: Energy Conservation, Efficiency & Supply Implement City Facility Energy Audits Air Quality Waste Recycling & Reduction Water Quality & Conservation Transportation City Council subsequently added the development of a Community Energy Plan (CEP)

3 Winter 2010 SusCom engaged community by holding 19 facilitated workshops Topics of Energy Management and Water Management Over 300 participants These workshops paved the way for City Council to charge the SusCom with the development of a CEP SusCom retained an energy consultant and a CEP was developed in 2011 and presented to Council last fall

4 Concurrent to the work of the SusCom was the preparation of the City s first Energy Conservation & Efficiency Plan for City Facilities & Operations Some components of that Plan include:

5 Traffic Signal LED Retrofit Project Conversion of all traffic signals (50+ intersections) in City from incandescent to LED s 80-90% reduction in electric use 25%-30% return on investment Large maintenance savings as LED s last 7-10 years and incandescents last 1-2 years Holland BPW fronted capital cost & City paying back over 3-4 years

6 Downtown LED Lighting Project ARRA (EECBG) funding Conversion of 300 Downtown pedestrian lights from 175 watt metal halides to 70 watt LED s $8-$10,000 annual savings

7 Interior Lighting Upgrades to City Buildings ARRA/Ottawa County EECBG Local Government Efficiency Upgrade Program Provided funding for interior lighting upgrades in six City buildings Included installation of occupancy sensors, daylighting controls and upgrade flourescent lighting to T-8 lights and install LED bulbs

8 City Facility Energy Audits Summer 2009 City retained GMB Architect-Engineers to complete a Phase 1 energy audit of 14 City buildings & facilities These audits have been the basis for much of the City s slow but steady incremental improvements over the past few years, with special attention to lighting projects

9 Bio-diesel Demonstration Project City of Holland, HBPW & Max Transit conducting a demo project to evaluate the use of B5 & B20 fuels in selected trucks/buses Mechanics report no issues Mileage same as mineral diesel Does cost more Categorical pollutants and CO2e are reduced, but there is no way to monetize those reductions From a financial POV, it makes more sense to do other efficiency projects to reduce GHG emissions vs. bio-fuels If we can receive grant monies, we may install B/E pumps if can source locally produced fuels from non-corn sources Working with A2 Clean Cities Coalition

10 EV Charging Stations Installed EV charging stations Funded with a Federal DOE grant Locations include: City Hall Downtown 8 th Street City Flats Hotel Transportation Services Airport Area high schools

11 Vehicle Fleet City purchased its first plug-in hybrid vehicle Chevy Volt. Should be delivered by this April This was not an easy decision for City Council due to cost, but there is a recognition that we need to walk the talk Lithium-ion batteries for the Volt are made in Holland

12 Complete Streets City Council approved a Resolution to use complete street design components on all new and reconstructed streets Narrow traffic lanes On-street bike lanes Sidewalks on both sides Splitter islands for peds and traffic calming Large amount of tree plantings

13 Irrigation System Upgrades Continually upgrading irrigation systems in parks, cemeteries and other public spaces with: Better controls More efficient pumps Goals are to reduce water and electricity usage and to save on costs

14 Other Current Sustainability Projects

15 City Hall Attic Insulation Project $23,000 for natural gas for heating and hot water (2011) $56,000 for electricity (2011) Estimate 20-30% energy savings or $15-20,ooo/year 2-3 year ROI

16 Airport Tunnel Lighting Project >$50,000 electric bill/year Investigating the relamping of tunnel with induction lighting (better quality) 50-60% energy reductions + maintenance cost reductions $140,000 up front capital cost 4-5 year ROI

17 Park lighting upgrades Install better controls to reduce lighting when not needed & retrofit with LED s if grants are available

18 Anti-Idling Policy Currently researching Would only apply to City owned vehicles with exceptions for emergency vehicles Potential savings of $100/year/vehicle

19 Finish Building & Facility Energy Audits Matt Urban Recreation Complex Handful of buildings & facilities still need to be audited including recreational facilities

20 Storm Water System Conducting a complete inventory & analysis Better asset management Prioritize capital improvements Assist with regulatory permitting Include BMP s and LID s such as rain gardens and rain barrels Draft Stormwater Ordinance Identify sustainable funding approaches such as Ann Arbor s Storm Water Utility

21 Recycling of Organics Continuing to research year around recycling of organics in municipal solid waste stream Residents may currently place lawn, garden and kitchen organics in yard bins during Spring Fall Desire year around opportunity Compost waste with potential to bio-digest first for methane recovery and electricity generation

22 City Hall Vegetable Garden! FUN demonstration project! Highly visible Donate produce and flowers to area community kitchen Employees volunteer (hopefully!) during lunch hours
