Integrated Development Plan for Ethiopian Renaissance Addis-Ababa : towards an African sustainable metropolis 26th, 27th and 28th of June Adama A presentation by Etienne Lhomet Independent Consultant
The mobility demand will rise even quicker than population Demographic and mobility trends in Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa ig going to require a super Public Transport Network to try to limit the car invasion! As many car trips as Public Transport journeys
The 4 other axis connect Addis to secundary cities The hitorical and geographical connection to the Rift Valleyc A major South corridor

Don't forget the existing Public Transport sector! Buses for all without losing money! Very important to control the overall cost of operation! Urban renaissance Regional challenges Minibuses Other bus lines Prioritary bus lines LRT and BRT MRT (regional railways or subways) A hierarchized public transport network for the Greater Addis Ababa
Both LRT and BRT will play an important role The total number of minibuses should be contained A realistic and ambitious strategy for Public Transport in Addis
60 buses per hour, it's OK, combining different lines! Nobody on the busway! Bruno Plumey - A BRT system in Bogota : a closed system
No more than 30 LRT per hour, even combining lines! Pedestrians can sometimes cross the LRTway A LRT in Casablanca : an open system
45 metros per hour, it's OK! Nobody on the tracks! A subway in Lyon : a closed system
Reasonable capacities per mode (minimum headways : 1 min for buses and metro, 2 min for LRT) Classical BRT (articulated) 4 lanes biarticulated BRT Classical LRT Twin LRT 150 passengers in articulated buses, 200 in biarticulated buses Minimum headway for combined bus lines : 1 minute 300 passengers in long single LRT, 440 in twin short LRT Minimum headway for combined LRT lines : 2 minutes Subway Passengers/hour/direction 800 people in subway coaches Minimum headway for single subway line : 90 seconds Take care not to go over the actual capacity of the system 40000
3 m wide platforms can easily be overcrowded People will acced to the tracks blocking the proceeding of the LRT Take care not to go above the actual capacity of the system
A saturated LRT in Bordeaux Observed saturation.... and theoretical capacity

Theoretical operation with a 4 minutes headway... Observed operation with a 4 minutes headway... Probable situation with a 3 minutes hedway... It is very difficult to operate with regularity a LRT or BRT system
Take care not to go above the actual capacity of the system Bruno Plumey -
Take care not to go above the actual capacity of the system Bruno Plumey -

A huge effort on public spaces! Great tram design! A car-free city center A typical «French style» LRT project which has changed a lot of things in the city since 2003
Après une croissance modérée dans les années 90 (0,6% par an) on estime que la croissance de l aire urbaine est maintenant deux fois plus rapide A great work on public spaces changes everything
Après une croissance modérée dans les années 90 (0,6% par an) on estime que la croissance de l aire urbaine est maintenant deux fois plus rapide A great work on public spaces Une croissance de la population 2008changes everything 2020 localisée près des axes de TC
A great work on public spaces changes everything
A great work on public spaces changes everything
A great work on public spaces changes everything : this is also true for BRTs!
A great work on public spaces changes everything : this is also true for BRTs!
A stimulating and trendy metropolis, which protects its inheritage and is connected to the world An efficient and friendly metropolis where you can find quality jobs A pleasant metropolis where you do want to live A healthty metropolis which manages natural risks A sober metropolis which does not spoil natural resources Cultural dynamics and Culture bottom up approach Economics Urban shapes Health and safety Nature Unemployment, poorly qualified jobs, new worls economy, local loops and long loops Affordable dwellings, post carbon mobility, green grid Air pollution, healthy food, criminality Climatic change, water management, biodiversity Change mobility to change the city!
Thank you very much for your attention! A realistic and ambitious strategy for Public Transport in Addis
