2 Motorways and Tomorrow s Urban Mobility With 4 million car trips each day in Ile-de- France, the greater Paris area is an ideal setting for this reflection, to which the motorway sector contributes. The main routes into the capital, which is served by beltways, draw considerable traffi c, such as on the A1, a major motorway north of Paris, with up to 200,000 vehicles/day. This traffi c generates saturation and daily congestion, which are source of nuisance and loss of time for users. Turning the A1 into a multimodal infrastructure approaching Paris The A1 motorway, connecting Paris-Charlesde-Gaulle Airport to the Carrefour Pleyel in Saint-Denis, one of the future Grand Paris Express stations, was chosen as a field of study. This structuring route is conducive to innovation and the integration of new mobility practices, which are non-polluting and accessible to all. The concept is to gradually relieve the A1 of the most polluting vehicles from Paris-CDG Airport to the Pleyel area, beyond which they will no longer be able to travel. Redesigned over twenty-kilometer, the A1 will then become a continuous interface with other means of transportation, via intermodal connection platforms, to gradually reduce car capacity. RETHINKING MOTORWAYS AND THEIR SERVICES TO ACCOMMODATE TOMORROW S URBAN MOBILITY Today: > 1.15 people per vehicle on average > 17 kg CO 2 per 100 km > 90 hours of traffi c jam per year and per driver in the urban area of Paris With the Grand Paris project, this northern sector will soon benefi t from new urban transport lines. It s an opportunity to rethink the interaction between the different transportation modes and imagine a motorway connected to semi-urban and urban areas by Ordinary lanes Reserved lanes Subway line 17 Video available at the following link: YouTube: ASFA Autoroutes This forward thinking was carried out in partnership with two higher education establishments, the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (ENPC) and the École Nationale Supérieure d Architecture, de la Ville et des Territoires (ENSAVT) of Marne-la-Vallée.

3 FOUR INTERMODAL STATIONS TO RELIEVE TRAFFIC PRES 1 Intermodal station 1 Reserved lanes Connected and autonomous vehicles Carpooling Vehicle to infrastructure communication Traffic jam 1 km ahead ; join the convoy of connected vehicles The A1, initially accessible to all vehicles on all its lanes, is gradually changing as intermodal stations are added. Located along the motorway and built on existing service areas, these interconnection platforms are sized and built to allow the vehicles that are offl oaded from the A1 to park and to quickly connect their passengers to other modes of transportation: links to public transport, in particular the future line 17 of the Grand Paris Express, shuttles to access local residential and economic areas, and vehicles authorized to travel in reserved lanes on the motorway. These areas offer numerous services and offer a large parking capacity. The fi rst reserved lanes are set up right out the fi rst intermodal station, completed by others after each subsequent station.

5 4 Last intermodal station Traffic on reserved lanes only Arrival at the Pleyel district Terminal of the A1 To the Pleyel area Past the last intermodal station, all the ordinary lanes are suppressed, and when approaching the Pleyel area, only authorized vehicles can travel on reserved lanes. A final stage before Paris, the Start Hub is a new gateway to the heart of the city, a multiservice, multimodal interface, and a major link in the project.

6 PLEYEL S START HUB Motorways and Tomorrow s Urban Mobility Located in a very urban environment bounded by the Carrefour Pleyel in Saint-Denis, this intermodal urban super-station is adapted to the evolution of mobility practices. It enables passengers to quickly transfer to the transit networks of Paris (bus, tram, commuter rail, subway), to paths reserved for soft mobility leading to the center of Paris, and to the autonomous shuttle that will serve the future Saint- Denis Pleyel station of Grand Paris Express. Far from being just a transit point with mobility services, the Start Hub is also a place to live and work, with shops, local services, co-working and relaxation spaces, and more. 7 SHUTTLES AS A LOCAL TRANSIT LINK Along a 2 km route, a high-frequency autonomous shuttle connects the Start Hub to different locations in the neighborhood of Pleyel : the Campus and its business center, then the emblematic Saint-Denis Pleyel Station, the new rail hub for transport in the region. It circulates on the ground, and can turn into an air route to adapt to topographic constraints of the site. From Pleyel to the center of Paris, the A1 has been redesigned as a green route, reconverted into a space dedicated to soft mobility. PLEYEL STATION CAMPUS START HUB
