3 Users manual for DX Coolers VKS, VKK or VK Special designs Standard direct expansion (dx) coolers are supplied in the design as given in this catalogue. The coolers VKS, VKK and VK are normally used in closed water systems, so that no corrosion problems are to be expected. If the cooler is operating in an open water system there is the danger of corrosion attack mainly to the steel parts of the cooler. Corrosion of the baffle plates may quickly lead to duty reduction by shortcircuiting of the waterflow. It is therefore essential to ensure a good water treatment to prevent corrosion. It is also possible to use special materials for agressive water conditions. It is essential to consider the design water flow strictly. Exceeding the maximum allowable water velocity may lead to erosion and erosion-corrosion attack to the internal surfaces. Strong fouling at the water side may also lead locally to higher water velocities. The presence of solid particles in the circulating waterflow, like silt or sand may damage the cooler internally and should be avoided. The cooler should be mounted free from vibrations. Apart from mechanical damage, vibrations may add to erosion-corrosion phenomena. The cover gasket of the standard cooler is made of neoprene rubber, specially selected on freon resistancy and elasticity under low temperature. The good sealing properties of this material is best maintained if the cooler remains under pressure after commissioning. Closing down an installation filled with refrigerant during a long period may cause the gasket to shrink and reduce its elasticity. This may cause leakages when restarting the plant. In order to achieve the required super heat of the refrigerant the water inlet connection shall be choosen at the refrigerant suction connection side. Corrosion resistance design waterside Shell and connection stubs can be executed in stainless steel or Cu-Ni alloys. For the baffle plate assembly stainless steel supporting rods and baffle plates of stainless steel, Cu-Ni or brass are available. The special tubes with spiral innerfin are also available in CuNi10 Fe1 Mn acc. to DIN and steel St35.8 acc. to DIN Tubes in stainless steel, Alu-brass or other Cu-Ni alloys are possible too, but without the spiralized inner surface. Special design on request. Low temperature application For design temperatures below -10 C the construction and/or material choice has to be adapted depending from the rules of the inspection authorities. For temperatures between -20 C and -40 C special Novapress gasket material is used. Multi-circuiting (Duplexing) The direct expansion coolers can be supplied with two independant refrigerant circuits (duplexing). More than two circuits on request only. The maximum allowable pressure difference between the circuits is 10 bar. Multiple circuiting on the waterside is not possible. Duty range 25 up to 2000 kw with a cooling surface 2 up to 100 m 2. The most important application is cooling of water and water-glycol mixtures. Standard design is for application in closed water systems. For special waterconditions or special liquids like water-glycol a suitable quotation can be given on request. Intensive research and testing supported by a computer model has produced a series of 72 basic models with 12 shell diameters and 6 standard lengths. Varying the number of refrigerant passes in combination with two different baffle spacings gives the possibility to select most efficient type VKS for a given application. The liquid cooler is suitable for all halocarbon refrigerants. The duty range covers 25 up to 2000 kw with a cooling surface 2 up to 100 m 2. System Direct expansion of the refrigerant provides a liquid-gas mixture in the cooler. This refrigerant passes through the tubes. The tubes are of a special type having an internal spiralfinning giving an optimum between heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop. For every application the most efficient distribution of the refrigerant per tube and per pass has been calculated. The water-glycol flow is guided through the shell by means of baffle plates. 5 VKS Design Shell Seamless steel tube : St 35.8 according to DIN For type VKS 18, 20, 22 and 24 : plate material P265GH to EN Shell side is equipped with a drain and purge connection. Tube plate / Tube Tubeplate: P265 GH to EN Tubes: SF-Copper to DIN The holes in the tube plate are double grooved to give a better resistance against thermal tension. The tubes have a spiralized internal finning. The tubes are rolled into the tube plate. Covers/Gaskets Covers: P265 GH acc. to EN Bolts: 8.8 acording to DIN 267 Gaskets: Neoprene-composite material to Helpman specification. The covers are machined from solid steel plate material and are grooved to have a confined gasket. Baffle plate assembly Baffle plates ST 37-2 to DIN Support rods: St 37-2 to DIN Spacers: Sst 2 to DIN Depending on type of cooler there are 2 baffle spacings available (S and T in the type number). Baffle plate set is fixed by supporting rods. Refrigerant connections Connection St 37.0 according to DIN 2448/1629/3 executed as welding/soldering stub blanked off with a welded disc. Water connections Stubs 35.8 to DIN with flange R.St 37.2 to DIN , sized to DIN Each connection is provided with a 1/2" BSP female pocket. Counter flanges available on request. Finish The refrigerant side is dehydrated and filled with a nitrogen protection charge. The shell is internally shot blasted and protected by a phosphate treatment. 6 VKS Quality control Construction For all standard VKS coolers, strength calculations have been made according to AD-Merkblätter. Strength calculations in accordance with the rules of the inspection authorities mentioned on page 4 can be supplied on request. The standard coolers are pressure tested while submerged under water: Test pressure refrigerant side 22 bar. Test pressure liquid side 13 bar. Pressure tests in accordance with the rules of the inspection authorities as listed, are possible on request. Leaktest The standard coolers are submitted to following leaktest: Tube/tubeplate connection: Pneumatic test on shell side at 13 bar during 24 hours, tested while unit is submerged under water. Cover/gasket/tubeplate: Pneumatic test on tube side at 22 bar while unit is submerged under water. Other test procedures on request. Dehydration The standard liquid cooler is blown through with dry compressed air and dehydrated by evacuation. The vacuum-dryness test is based on a stable pressure of 10 mbar maintained for 30 minutes. Quality assurance Quality assurance is based on ISO Dimensions of the standard coolers are in accordance with the tolerance class of DIN E. Factory certificate and production report are available on request. 10 VKK Model indication Example : VKK VKK : liquid chiller fitted with internal fin tubes, diameter 16 mm 8 : shell diameter code 215 : Effective length in cm (nominal length) 1 : number of separate refrigerant circuits Application The type VKK liquid chillers are compactly built and suitable for direct evaporation of a H(C)FC refrigerant inside the tubes. The series comprises 22 models, which have a nominal capacity ranging from 55 up to 580 kw. The chillers are equipped with a distributor which facilitates optimal distribution of the refrigerant and baffle plates which ensure an intensive liquid flow. An appropriate offer can be made for these and many other liquids on request. 18 VKBN Model indication example : VKBN Pass VKBN : cooler type 16 : nominal diameter of the shell in inches 335 : nominal length 2 : number of passes Application VKBN liquid coolers are used in industrial refrigeration plants and heat pumps and are especially suitable in situations where the liquid side of the heat exchanger needs to be cleanable. The range includes a large number of types with cooling surfaces from 1.6 up to 88 m 2. The refrigerant evaporates on the shell side and the cooling liquid flows through the tubes. The suction separator on top of the shell has a special construction that gives a optimized separation of the remaining liquid from the gasstream. The liquid coolers are suitable for halocarbon refrigerants and ammonia and can be used for water and various types of brine. The liquid chiller is built up of a heat exchange section and an attached separator. The refrigerant evaporates on the shell side and the cooling liquid flows through the tubes. The liquid coolers are suitable for halocarbon refrigerants and ammonia The separator is dimensioned in such a way that drops of liquid are separated from the gas flow. The separator has a special internal construction for this purpose. 24 VKN Regulations The standard construction is designed according to the materials and design given in the documentation. By adapting to the specific testing requirements, the liquid chiller can be approved by the following testing authorities and regulations : Stoomwezen Lloyd s R.o.S. T.Ü.V. Bureau Veritas A.B.o.S. Germanischer Lloyd DNV As per inspection authority certain details may require adaptation, prices are given on request only. Quality control Strength For all standard VKN coolers, strength calculations have been made according to AD-Merkblätter. Strength calculations in accordance with the rules of the other inspection authorities mentioned on this page can be supplied on request. The standard coolers are pressure tested at : refrigerant side 22 bar cooling liquid side 5 bar Leaktest The standard coolers are submitted to the following leaktest : Tube / tubeplate connection : Pneumatic test on shell side at 22 bar during 24 hours, tested while unit is submerged under water Cover/gasket/tubeplate : Pneumatic test on tube side at 5bar. Other test procedures on request. Dehydration The standard liquid cooler is blown through with dry compressed air and dehydrated be evacuation. The vacuum dryness test is based on a stable pressure of 10 mbar maintained for 30 minutes Quality assurance Quality assurance is based on ISO Dimensions of the standard coolers are in accordance with the tolerance class of DIN E.
