This declaration is based on the BRE Environmental Profiles 2013 Product Category Rules for Type III environmental product declaration of construction products to EN 15804:2012+A1:2013. Comparability Environmental declarations from different programmes may not be comparable if not compliant with EN 15804:2012+A1:2013. Comparability is further dependent on the product category rules used and the source of the data, e.g. the database. See EN 15804:2012+A1:2013 for further guidance. Construction Product Product Description illbruck PU700 Brick Adhesive is a high quality adhesive based on modified polyurethanes for bonding bricks, blocks, natural stone and similar building materials and can be used in many industrial and construction applications. illbruck PU700 has excellent long-term resistance to weathering, water, sea water, acids and solvents. It is a ready-to-use product applied using a handheld applicator gun and is sold in a range of canister sizes. BF1331ECOP Rev 0.2 Page 3 of 10 BRE Global Ltd 2015
4 Technical Information Property Value Unit Open me (maximum) 8 Minutes Loading me 24 Hours Tensile strength, to DIN N/mm² Fire resistance, to NEN-EN Minutes Temperature resistance (short-term) -40 to +130 C Temperature resistance (long-term) -40 to +90 C Product Contents Material/Chemical Input % Prepolymer of diphenylmethanediisocyanate, polyols, plas cizers, catalyst and addi ves 90 Mixture of propellants dimethyl ether and propane, iso-butane and n-butane 10 Manufacturing Process illbruck PU700 Brick Adhesive is a one-component PU-Foam consisting of polyol blend, isocyanate resin (MDI) and propellant. The polyol blend (polyols, plasticiser and catalyst) is mixed in a 2500 kg mixing vessel. Each raw material is automatically weighed and controlled/checked via a weighing system, recorded and printed. This print is double-checked by the QC department and reported in the LIMS-database connected to a batch number. The water content of each batch of polyol blend is checked by the QC department. The measured value is noted in LIMSdatabase and should be below 1000 ppm. The batch of polyol blend is pumped from the mixing vessel to the day tank. A tin-plated steel canister is filled with the polyol blend from the day tank together with the MDI which is added directly from storage tanks. A valve is then clinched to the canister and the propellants are added. The canisters are shaken via an in-line machine and a cap or ring is put on. A code is printed on the base of each canister of illbruck PU700 and the canisters are put in cartons before being stored on pallets ready for transport. 5 The process flow diagram is shown below: Life Cycle Assessment Calculation Rules Declared / Functional unit The declared unit is a 700 ml canister of illbruck PU700 Brick Adhesive. illbruck PU700 Brick Adhesive is available in 500 ml, 700 ml, 750 ml and 800 ml canisters. This EPD covers the 700 ml canister as this was the predominant size manufactured in the study period (2011). System boundary In accordance with the modular approach as defined in EN 15804:2012, this cradle-to-gate EPD includes the product stage (A1-A3) covering both the adhesive and the canister. 6 Data sources, quality and allocation Specific foreground data derived from the Tremco-illbruck Productie B.V. production process at Arkel is used in the production LCA for modules A1 A3. Generic data is used for all other upstream and downstream processes that are beyond the control of the manufacturer (e.g. raw material production and energy). Modelling of the life cycle of illbruck PU700 was performed using SimaPro 8 LCA software from PRé. Background LCI datasets were taken from ecoinvent database v2.2. Where the creation of additional background datasets was required, these have been created using ecoinvent datasets. In accordance with the requirements of EN 15804, the most current available production data was used. The manufacturerspecific data from Tremco-illbruck Productie B.V. covered a production period of 1 year (01/01/2011 to 31/12/2011). All allocation procedures in the background datasets were according to EN and based on the ISO guidance. Tremco-illbruck Productie B.V. manufactures other finished products at the Arkel site, in addition to those covered by this EPD. Calculations were performed to enable allocation of total site energy use, water use, waste and emissions to the illbruck PU700 Brick Adhesive product. Cut-off criteria All raw materials, packaging materials and consumable item inputs, and associated transport to the plant, process energy and water use, direct production waste and emissions to air and water are included. 9 Interpretation The raw material inputs to the illbruck PU700 Brick Adhesive product are responsible for the majority of the impacts to the environment, followed by the product container materials such as the tin-plated steel canister. These impacts can be attributed to emissions and energy use associated with extraction of abiotic resources, manufacturing of the PU700 PU-foam product and production of the packaging inputs. Figure 1 presents the GWP (kg CO2 eq.) impact per 700 ml canister of illbruck PU700 caused by raw material inputs, canister inputs, other packaging, transport of inputs and the production process to the overall impact and shows that the PU700 raw material inputs contribute around 67% of the total impact. Of the raw material inputs to the illbruck PU700, the isocyanate and polyol blend (the 2 largest material inputs by mass) are the largest sources of impact. Together they contribute between 81% and 99% to the total environmental impact from material inputs across all impact categories. See Figure 2.
