4 Creating Connections with TPU To help wire and cable manufacturers create high quality, protective jackets and peripheral clips and connectors, we ve developed a portfolio of halogen-free polyether- and polyesterbased TPUs. Marketed under the IROGRAN brand these materials are suitable for a variety of industrial and consumer wire and cable applications. Features and characteristics Using IROGRAN TPU gives wire and cable manufacturers infinite scope for overcoming design and performance challenges. Manufactured in batches or on a continuous processing line, IROGRAN TPUs can be easily extruded or injection molded to meet requirements. 12 Processing guide Points to consider before extrusion To ensure that our customers get the best results from the IROGRAN TPU that they choose, we ve collated some handy hints to consider when storing, drying, coloring and processing our products. Storage IROGRAN TPUs come in pellet form IROGRAN TPUs are hygroscopic and absorb moisture from the air (especially polyether variants) When stored in open bags, IROGRAN TPUs can absorb up to 1.5% moisture relatively quickly Once open, seal any packaging promptly if there is TPU left inside Keep the feeder closed during extrusion Re-dry the material if it is exposed to open air for a long period of time. Drying We recommend drying using an dehumidified air dryer set to 80 to 100 c or a circulating air dryer at 100 to 110 c Depending on moisture content, drying may take between one to three hours If the use of masterbatches is required we recommend the use of a separate drying machine Maximum moisture content should not exceed 0.05%. Coloring Huntsman s IROGRAN TPUs are opaque or transparent Color can be added via a masterbatch (one to two per cent) The use of a non-tpu base masterbatch may cause surface issues due to incompatibility and because of limited added loading potential. Processing temperatures When IROGRAN TPU is extruded, the temperature of the extruder must be set accurately and maintained at the same level. For IROGRAN TPU grades (shore hardness A 80 to A 95) the temperature at the feeding funnel should be set at approximately 165 c. The temperature should be raised through the individual heating zones up to 195 c at the cylinder exit. At the nozzle, the temperature should be lowered by 5 c. If the temperature is too high, degradation of molecular weight can occur, which can lead to a deterioration of mechanical properties. 13 Extrusion parameters IROGRAN TPUs are usually processed on single screw extruders with a screw length of 24D to D. The feeding zone should be cooled and equipped with a hopper throat to ensure consistent output. The driving power of the extruder should be sufficient for processing the material. The torque of the screw should be as high as possible to enable easy processing at low temperatures. The output of an extruder depends both on the torque and type of material. The output of an extruder with a screw diameter of mm is approximately 15kg/h. For an extruder with a screw diameter of 90mm it is approximately 100kg/h. These are the output quantities when soft granulate is processed. For higher shore hardness grades, output quantities will be smaller. Compression = 1.3/length 24 D D = 65 mm Metering zone 8 D Flight depth 2,5 mm Compression zone 9 D Feed zone 7 D Flight depth 8 mm Screw type: Three zone screw L/D ratio: 24:1 :1 Compression ratio: 2:1 Drying: Around 90 to 100 c for two to three hours Masterbatches: Use masterbatches based on TPU Adapter: Fully heated, as short as possible Sieve packet: mesh, one to two layers Cooling: Always cool on hopper, never cool on the screw. 11
