Orion Engineered Carbons was founded in 2011, de riving from Degussa and Evonik.

Headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany, we employ more than 1,700 people in 14 production sites and four research and application centers around the globe.

In order to perform a premium customer service we are supplying the markets with their specific expectations through two different business lines: Rubber Blacks and Carbon Black Pigments.

3 1. About Orion Engineered Carbons Orion Engineered Carbons is one of the world s leading suppliers of Carbon Black. The company offers standard and high-performance products for rubber, coatings, printing inks, polymer systems and other applications. Orion Engineered Carbons was founded in 2011, de riving from Degussa and Evonik. While we are a new and innovative organization, we benefit from more than 100 years of experience in the Carbon Black Industry. Headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany, we employ more than 1,700 people in 14 production sites and four research and application centers around the globe. The Rubber Black research centers are located in Kalscheuren (Germany), Belpre (USA) and Bupyong (South Korea). In order to perform a premium customer service we are supplying the markets with their specific expectations through two different business lines: Rubber Blacks and Carbon Black Pigments. While Carbon Black Pigments focus on applications like coloring, UV protection and conductivity, reinforcement is by far the most important effect controlled by Rubber Blacks. Nearly all effects in end applications can be correlated with three Carbon Black parameters: structure, surface area/primary particle size and chemical surface groups. The data provided in this brochure is showing the relevant parameters, which can be measured by analytical methods. With 1.4 million tons production capacity p. a. we offer world-wide services in more than 100 countries. Orion Engineered Carbons generates long-term benefits for stakeholders while remaining committed to responsible business practices with focus on team culture, reliability and sustainability. 2. Technical Service for our Customers Besides a world-wide network of production sites Orion Engineered Carbons maintains research & development centers for rubber reinforcement. The main technical center is located in Kalscheuren (Germany), where physicists, chemists and engineers investigate the mechanism of rubber reinforcement and develop new products to meet future requirements of the rubber industry. A modern and well-equipped laboratory is available for research work, for application studies and for centralized test programs to monitor the in-rubber performance of our products. Orion Engineered Carbons continuously works on improvements of test methods and is actively involved in standardization associations. Technical service engineers offer technical support in all questions related to our product range, quality features and to the most beneficial application of our products. Additional service units are at our customers disposal when it comes to specific questions regarding product safety, product handling, logistics or packaging. Rubber Black Carbon Black has been produced by Orion s predecessors since It plays a crucial role in the rubber industry: When used in car tires it ensures a high resistance to abrasion, good road handling and ageing resistance. Furthermore, Carbon Black is an important ingredient in the production of a multiplicity of rubber goods, like for example sealings, hoses and antivibration systems. Carbon Black consists of carbon. Today the most common method for producing Carbon Black is the furnace black process. A liquid hydrocarbon feedstock is injected into a flame, which is generated by the combustion of a gaseous or liquid fuel in combination with preheated air. Under these conditions the feedstock decomposes and Carbon Black particles are formed. After separation of the process gas / Carbon Black mixture in filter systems the Carbon Black powder is pelletized in order to improve the handling properties. Alternative production processes working according to the same physico-chemical principle are the Lamp Black and the Degussa Gas Black Process. They provide Carbon Blacks with a unique combination of properties. Under the trademark CORAX, Orion Engineered Carbons produces a comprehensive range of standard grades of Furnace Blacks in accordance with the requirements of ASTM D Figure 3: High performance tires Apart from ASTM Carbon Blacks, considerable emphasis is placed on the development of new products, also manufactured by the furnace process. With these products Orion Engineered Carbons responds to the fast growing demand for specialities for high- and ultrahigh-performance car tires and fuel-efficient truck tires. ECORAX blacks used in tire treads and bodies provide a significant reduction in rolling resistance and consequently in fuel consumption. Clean Carbon Black grades (PUREX ) are of particular value in the manufacturing of mechanical rubber goods like extruded profiles and seals. PUREX grades show a good processibility and contribute to a smooth surface of the final product. Carbon Black produced by the Lamp Black process, DUREX 0, is a special type of Carbon Black, which is used in the production of technical rubber goods, where it guarantees excellent extrusion properties in terms of dimensional stability, a very smooth surface finish and some unique in-rubber properties. Because of its low reinforcement degree this grade allows particularly high loadings and has excellent processing properties. Special conductive Carbon Blacks are offered under the PRINTEX brand. 5
