Engines installed on ships built before January 1st are not covered by emission regulations Marine diesel engines has a very long service life The number of ships is increasing TIER II is only a 15% reduction compared to TIER I for the 2 stroke engines. 10 MAN B&W - Approved Method for pre-2000 engines An Approved Method for an MAN B&W engine consists of a slide valve with a low-nox nozzle, and minor performance adjustments. The application of the MAN B&W Approved Method will result in a range of benefits in additon to fulfillment of TIER I FTL MAN Diesel & Turbo

11 MAN B&W - Approved Method for pre-2000 engines An upgrade to Tier I is applicable if.. engine was installed between January 1st and December 31st cylinder displacement is 90 ltr. engine power >5000kW Approved Method is available FTL MAN Diesel & Turbo

12 Availability of Approved Method Approved Method is available when Engine designer verifies that: engine rating is not reduced by more than 1.0% specific Fuel Oil Consumption is not increased by more than 2.0% engine durability and reliability is not adversely affected cost of the Approved Method is less than 375 SDR per metric ton NOx calculated... FTL MAN Diesel & Turbo

13 Who does what? Approved Method for a range of engines: 1. Engine designer prepares application 2. Flag State approves, possibly supported by Class. 3. Flag State notifies IMO 4. IMO notifies shipping community, class and Flag States. FTL MAN Diesel & Turbo

14 Who does what? Implementation for the individual ship: 1. Owner shall introduce the AM at the IAPP certificate renewal survey 2. Slide valve installation / commissioning / engine adjustment 3.
