SRA Workshop, 18 Feb, Berlin Discussed Definitions, Objectives, Strategies, Impacts, Roadmaps
Definition: Smart Systems Integration Smart Systems combine cognitive functions with sensing, actuation, data communication and energy management in an integrated way. Enabling principles are: nanoelectronics, micro-electromechanics, magnetism, photonics, chemistry, radiation Energy procurement and storage Sensing Processing Knowledge base Actuation Data communication Integration The knowledge base separates smart systems from systems whichare purely reactive Smart Systems provide safe and reliable autonomous operation under all relevant circumstances. - A necessary (or intrinsic) condition for smartness -
Definition: Smart Systems Integration Smart Systems are integrated with the (natural, built and social) environment, networks for power and data, other smart systems and the human. Smart Systems provide (and use) cognitive support to (and from) their surroundings - A sufficient (or extrinsic) condition for smartness -
Definition: Smart Systems Integration 1 st Level Smart Systems integrate sensing and or actuation as well as signal processing to enable actions Gyro Mouse Gyration 2 nd Level Smart Systems are built on multifunctional perception and are predictive and adaptive 3 rd Level Smart Systems perform human-like perception and action, and generate energy Functionality determines smartness Continuous Glucose Monitoring Medtronic Fully Automated Driving Google
Objectives and Strategies Technologies for Smart Systems: Respond to trends on technology pull (from IoT) and societal needs (for high end performance at low cost) Go for new designs, materials, testing, methods and tools towards reliability, robustness, functional safety and security Safety and Reliability Determine physics of failure for all failure modes Enable fast technology and product qualification Develop methods for prognostic health monitoring Production Processes for Smart Systems Implement automated processes, enable fabrication on demand Focus on 3D printing, advanced packaging (system in package, integrated circuit packaging), alternative materials integration Foster cooperation with SMEs in open innovation platforms (Security of Smart Systems, e.g. encryption of data)
Objectives and Strategies Transportation Support transportation as a whole with tech transfer from auto Enable Smart Mobility (Green, Integrated, Interoperable) by Smart (Heterogeneous) Systems Integration Strengthen synergies with e.g. cognitive science, biomedical, IoT Health and Wellbeing Change the way diseases are diagnosed, treated and followed-up Enable delocalized healthcare provision Enhance the continuum of care with wearable / implanted, multi parameter smart systems Manufacturing Support industrial internet / Industry 4.0 by SSI Provide deterministic and reliable real-time manufacturing Make us of M2M applications and cloud services Support operators with augmented reality and wearables
Objectives and Strategies Internet of Things Position SSI as a key enabler for IoT, and IoT as a key pull for SSI Promote sensing / measurement and actuation /control as key ingredients of SSI in IoT Take advantage of harmonized sets of functionalities /protocols Energy Address the whole chain - power generation, transmission, distribution, storage, to utilization and consumption Target high efficiency and reduced loss of energy e.g. with power semiconductors, PV inverters and assembly /package technologies Natural Resources Enable resource efficiency with a focus on raw materials, water and food along the full value-chain Increase resource productivity and decouple economic growth from resource use
Roadmaps What functionalities can smart system integration provide for reaching the objectives?
