3 GHG Emissions The international shipping industry is responsible for the carriage of 90% of world trade and is the life blood of the global economy. CO2 emissions from international shipping amounted to approx. 870 million tonnes or 3% of global CO2 emissions. MEPC 59/24/Add.1ANNEX 14 Second IMO GHG study 2009
4 CO2 emissions from International Shipping MEPC 59/24/Add.1ANNEX 14 Second IMO GHG study 2009 Shipping is the most energy efficient mode of transport. But, According to the growth of world trade, particularly from/to developing countries, the international shipping will have greater impact on global warming.

Operational measures SEEMP (Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan) <new & existing ships> a mandatory management tool for energy efficient ship operation for a ship and/or a shipping company. using the EEOI (Energy Efficiency Operational indicator) as a monitoring tool and benchmark. Market-based Mechanisms providing a fiscal incentive for the maritime industry to invest in more energy efficient manner - under discussion
