2 All for Sustainable Transportation Introduction Regulatory Framework - IMO NYK s Objectives and Initiatives TAKASAGO MARU

3 GHG Emissions The international shipping industry is responsible for the carriage of 90% of world trade and is the life blood of the global economy. CO2 emissions from international shipping amounted to approx. 870 million tonnes or 3% of global CO2 emissions. MEPC 59/24/Add.1ANNEX 14 Second IMO GHG study 2009

4 CO2 emissions from International Shipping MEPC 59/24/Add.1ANNEX 14 Second IMO GHG study 2009 Shipping is the most energy efficient mode of transport. But, According to the growth of world trade, particularly from/to developing countries, the international shipping will have greater impact on global warming.

9 IMO Framework for emission reduction Adaption under MARPOL Annex VI Technical measures EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) <new ships> require a minimum energy efficiency level per capacity mile (e.g. tonne mile) for different ship type and size segments. the required level to be tightened incrementally. Operational measures SEEMP (Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan) <new & existing ships> a mandatory management tool for energy efficient ship operation for a ship and/or a shipping company. using the EEOI (Energy Efficiency Operational indicator) as a monitoring tool and benchmark. Market-based Mechanisms providing a fiscal incentive for the maritime industry to invest in more energy efficient manner - under discussion
