3 Introduction SABIC Innovative Plastics Ultem* sheet products are based on the company s Ultem resin, a tough amorphous polyetherimide (PEI) thermoplastic that is already widely used in most of the major aircraft interiors. A growing number of airline and rail OEMs are selecting SABIC Innovative Plastics Ultem sheet for demanding interior applications due to its flame, smoke and toxicity compliance and the tremendous strength, excellent aesthetics and other high-performance benefits. Two grades in particular are making major inroads into this important industry segment. They include: Ultem 1668A sheet, a material developed for use in interior aircraft components Ultem R16SG29 sheet, a new product designed for interior rail applications. 3 SABIC Innovative Plastics SABIC Innovative Plastics 3

4 Ultem* sheet reliability for the transportation industry Ultem polyetherimide resin (PEI) is an amorphous high performance polymer which is characterized by excellent thermal properties, good chemical resistance, inherent flame retardancy and exceptional dimensional stability. 6 Ultem* sheet for aircraft and passenger train interiors Ultem 1668A sheet As one of SABIC Innovative Plastics main product offerings to the industry, Ultem 1668A sheet is an inherently flame resistant material with low smoke emission. It meets all current commercial aircraft interior requirements, including OSU heat-release rate below 65/65, FAA smoke and flammability testing, and FRA vertical burn criteria and complies with toxicity standards BSS7239 and ABD0031. Ultem 1668A sheet also offers aircraft OEMs exceptional impact and heat resistance, modulus and chemical resistance in combination with lightweight, exceptional strength and good surface aesthetics. The product can be thermoformed, pressure formed, twin sheet formed or used in flat or cold-formed applications. Paintable and/or available from SABIC Innovative Plastics in a range of colors, Ultem 1668A sheet is finding use in an array of interior aircraft applications, such as passenger service units, seating and flight deck components, galleys, stow bins and sidewalls. Ultem R16SG29 sheet Ultem R16SG29 sheet is a growing material of choice in train window masks, cladding, walls and seating and other interior parts due to its design flexibility in three dimensional shapes, outstanding mechanical properties and flame, smoke and toxicity capabilities. Especially important for this sector is this product s excellent cleanabilty and chemical resistance. It meets U.S. FRA 49 CFR Part 238 flammability and smoke emissions standards for train passenger cars and locomotive cabs and complies with toxicity standard Bombardier SMP 800C. It also meets Germany s DIN5510, Part 2 (S4/SR2/ST2 rating) ratings and is compliant with French standards NF P /5 and NF F (M1, F1, rating). Adder cabin divider Parts made from Ultem 1668 sheet have been delivered to Airbus aircraft. Boeing panel Boeing has selected Ultem 1668A sheet for its flame, smoke and toxicity performance to use in its C17 jetliner. Thermofomed by TexStars, Inc., Ultem 1668A sheet forms the plane s entire cockpit. Another major consideration was Ultem 1668A sheet's ability (HDT of 200 C) to withstand excessive heat build-up from sunlight shining on the cockpit walls. Ultem R16SG29 sheet s can offer high-performance characteristics for the interior applications of passenger trains. Here, this SABIC product can be formed to cover the entire interior of a train car from floor to ceiling. The first train with Ultem R16SG29 sheet interior, formed in 3 mm thickness, meets not only Siemens s demand for exceptional cleanability, durability, and vandal-resistance, but also meets the required flame, smoke and toxicity requirements of the rail industry. Siemens train window surround Ultem R16SG29 sheet used to form the entire interior of a new line of passenger train cars produced by Siemens for Houston s new Metro light rail system. 6 SABIC Innovative Plastics

7 Cutting-edge performance, great looks and new products Because most of SABIC Innovative Plastics Ultem* sheet products are inherently flame-retardant, have low smoke emission and comply with toxicity standards, they can be good candidates to replace polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in many interior applications. Products comprising this family of SABIC Innovative Plastics products also address growing eco-label application concerns, helping customers meet such stringent industry requirements as TCO99, Blue Angel, White Swan or EU, while meeting the fire safety criteria of Underwriters Laboratories (UL ), Inc. Ultem sheet gives formed parts lighter weight and consistent throughpart color versus traditional materials such as metal and PVC blends and is making significant gains against other traditional materials such as metal, fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) and sheet-molding compound (SMC) in several application areas. Future developments with Ultem sheet SABIC Innovative Plastics plans to introduce two new products in the relatively near future. The first is a new low-gloss product Ultem 1668L low-gloss sheet spawned by Ultem 1668A sheet and developed by SABIC Innovative Plastics to address growing aircraft industry demand for low-gloss matte finishes on aircraft seating and other interior parts.
