President s Message By Richard Schauer March has been a memorable month for many reasons. It is a fundamental principle of our club that we take great pride in our community outreach work. The first of three such events took place March 4 at the Palisades Presbyterian Church in Mission Valley, put on by a non-profit organization benefiting Parkinson s patients named Tremble Clefs. Many of you share the pride and warm feelings derived from participating in for such events and this one was a gem. Please see the article that follows. We plan to stay in touch with the Tremble Clefs, for there will be other opportunities to help them. Next we concluded our first weekend getaway of the year at Triada Palm Springs. This is a repeat of a trip there October back by popular demand. At dinner Saturday night at Melvyn s I took the time to survey the table and the many diverse personalities who populate our fine organization. Everyone I studied and soaked in brings so many talents to the table, I consider myself extremely fortunate to be associated with such a group of people and friends. Weekend getaways not only give our Packards some serious road time, but we all draw closer together through such events. October is the next weekend event, and it may be quite a challenge for Packards, climbing up to Lake Arrowhead/Big Bear, but for those who choose to make the trip happen there will be only joy at the end of the road. I hope we get a huge turnout for that one. April is right around the corner and it is a very busy month. The La Jolla Concours is in the offing. The field is locked in. Our jobs are to get our fine cars ready, which is happening even as I write. My own car is at Bowden s for a long overdue clutch repair and some other small but significant repairs. I hope to see many familiar faces there, for La Jolla 2017 offers the finest display of Packard cars ever in San Diego history. April 14 is a Friday, and a private Easter Gala event benefiting Down syndrome (see flier). If you plan to go, please let me know. Janice Martinelli, chairperson for the National City Historical Society, needs a car count so she can make the proper arrangements. There may be a special surprise guest at that event, which I am not at liberty to talk about now; consider this a teaser. April 30 is Motor Cars on Main Coronado, which is always an outstanding event. Packard cars have scored well, taking home top honors the last few years, and anyone can tell you that is a tough, competitive field. Looking forward to May: Mark on your calendar Sunday the 14 th is the next wine tasting tour, beginning at Ron Steffey s house followed by a trip into the Temecula wine country. All wishing to go please notify Ron Steffey or Richard Schauer. As I said April is packed full of fun. Don t miss out! I have one correction from the March president s message. There is an all-packard swap meet planned for Saturday July 15 at Original Mike s Restaurant in Santa Ana (see flier). Do you remember when I asked everyone who is an old movie buff to keep an eye out for Packards in film? Recently I saw The Fly on TCM. Who has not seen that great old horror film with Vincent Price and David Hedison? I am old enough to brag seeing it in the theater! Okay, hold the old age jokes, please. At the end of the movie the scientist s devoted wife crushes him in a press machine. Arrested for murder the police chief instead decides to have her committed. An ambulance comes rushing up the driveway: a 1948 Packard Henney. I nearly dropped my popcorn. I have never actually seen a Packard ambulance. What movie trivia stories do you have to share? This is a fun game. I love sharing Packard stories. A former co-worker of mine named Tim originates from Indiana. As a boy he used to go with his family up to rural Michigan to his grandfather s farm. Tim s grandfather owned a 1932 Packard Standard Eight that lived in the barn. Tim never recalls seeing the Packard actually drive, for his days visiting grandfather s farm date back to the late 50 s and early 60 s. But the engine ran like a top. The car was up on blocks. One rear wheel was replaced by a pulley. Grandfather attached a long belt to the pulley that reached outside the barn which operated a variety of farm equipment. Even in its old age the grand old Packard was still of service to the family. My instructions to everyone is to go out to the garage, fire up your Packard, and take it for a drive. Spring is here. The days are soft and pleasant, perfect for dusting off our Packards and giving them some much needed exercise. Packards International San Diego Region Page 4

Triada Palm Springs Weekend Tour March 24-26, 2017 Richard Schauer The first weekend tour for our region is now in the history books. The people at Triada remembered us and provided a nice welcome by waived the $25 per night parking fee. Accommodations at Palm Springs were a bit tight this go-round because of the AACA car show scheduled for Saturday Convertible owned by William Orley Karen and I made the trip with Ron Steffey, doing our part to support the California carpooling initiative. Besides, it was great to have company and begin the weekend early. By the time we arrived just before 4:00, Karl and Peggy Ramsing were just checking in. With them were friends Gene and Bobbie Schultz. Not long after that the caravan arrived, bringing Jim and Catherine Woolsey in their 1935 limo, Steve and Carol Ross driving Buttercup, and Tim Pestotnik giving his 1965 Pontiac GTO some much needed open road exercise. As you can imagine the GTO HATED the mountain roads (NOT). The only mechanical malfunction was an exhaust hanger that rattled off Tim s muscle car, which MacGyver Tim fixed straight away. Last to arrive was Michael Cooper, president of the San Diego Region Mercedes-Benz Club, who came over the mountain sick (his wife was unable to attend due to illness). Karen and I went to work setting up our room as the hospitality suite and everyone came to say hello and relax with nice snacks and drink. One of the many blessings of our club is how well everyone gets along. Conversation and laughter just flow seemingly automatically. Later in the evening we walked over to Palm Canyon Blvd to find a place to eat. As you could imagine restaurants were overflowing on this busy weekend, with typical waits up to 2 hours, but after considerable hiking, we at last found a simple diner, which got the job done. Back for a nightcap and then down for the night to get some good rest in advance of the Saturday car show. Breakfast Saturday behind us it was time to find our way to Sunrise Park, where approximately 112 cars were gathered for the AACA Palm Springs meet. We naturally gravitated to Packard entries, and there were three very nice examples on the grass. I met Bill Orley from the Washington State region of P.I., who brought his very beautiful 1949 Packard Ultramatic. Finished in a luxurious red color interior is a soft beige fabric. A show quality car, Bill takes pride in driving his Packard all over Washington and to nearby Idaho and Oregon. A beautiful 1956 Patrician finished in dark Packard blue. Bill Torrence's dark maroon 1942 model 180 sedan quietly parked in the long row of fine collectible cars. The rear entrance 1900 Thomas T Packards International San Diego Region Page 5

The first persons we saw were Gary and Amy Marchetti, who brought their perfect 1931 Nash sedan. This same car will soon be seen at La Jolla. Gary tied for first place with Aaron Weiss s Chrysler, which may be seen to the left of Gary's Nash! Their Nash is a serious contender and has already won some impressive trophies. The field was loaded with impressive cars. The mystery car for me was a 1936 Auburn four door convertible that was listed as in the Preservation class. The car had clearly been restored. I cannot figure that one. I especially love the 1900 Thomas, the earliest car at the show and impeccably restored. The four Amigos? J. Woolsey, R. Steffey, T. Pestotnik, and R. Schauer. Yellow Dusenburg Model A may be viewed on their left. It was time to move along at last. Ladies went shopping while the guys headed back to Triada for libation. There were lots to discuss regarding the fine show we had just seen and before we knew it everyone needed to get gussied up for the 6:00 dinner reservation at Melvyn s. Peggy Ramsing, Tim Pestotnik, Ron Steffey, Karen and Richard Schauer Jim and Catherine Woolsey and Karl Ramsing are ready for some fine dining. For those who do not know Melvyn s is a premier dining and entertainment spot in Palm Springs. Originally built by the owner of the Pierce Arrow manufacturing company in the 1920 s the establishment it is now a five star restaurant, conference center, and hosts weddings on the grounds. Service and cuisine are quite simply the best. Tim Pestotnik brought one bottle each of Bordeaux and Burgundy he hand carried from France just for the occasion, and Ron Steffey added a fine quality bottle of cabernet of his own. Food and company were quite simply the best, and nearly 3 hours flew by. Good times happen when Packard people get together. Streve Ross, Jim and Catherine Woolsey, Karl Ramsing, Peggy Ramsing, Tim Pestotnik, Ron Steffey and Karen Schauer all looking happy as the fine wine has been served. Packards International San Diego Region Page 6

Back at Triada the hospitality suite was open one more time for a nightcap, and yet more repartee flowed. It seems there is never enough time at these events to truly catch up, and yet more laughter waiting just around the corner. Reluctantly everyone said goodnight. Next morning was time to pack up and go, which is always the sad part, for duties and responsibilities awaited everyone back at home. I thank Tim for setting up the weekend and to everyone who came. Our next weekend adventure is seven months away, and, speaking for myself, I can hardly wait. Mr. Woolsey and Mr. Schauer discuss the finer points of vintage automotive maintenance. Tremble Clefs Outreach Event Richard Schauer When is a car show not really a car show? Answer: when it is a fund raiser for Parkinson s disease. This was the first annual car show and fund raiser for Parkinson s by the Tremble Clefs organization, and it was a roaring success (literally in some cases). Our thanks go to Phoebe Roeder and her entire team, who went all out to make this event a success. It was held at the Palisades Presbyterian Church off Waring Road in Mission Valley. They were hoping to get 50 cars and 112 showed up, nearly filling up two parking lots! The best of show prize went to Tom O Hara and his 1934 convertible sedan. Congratulations, Tom, on yet another first place win! Tom also earned the Hard Luck Award, for his Standard Eight engine sprung a leak at the left engine cover, necessitating him to have his beautiful Packard hauled home. Undaunted, Tom will get the engine fixed in time for La Jolla! He is indefatigable. Other members attending the show included Brian Wagner, our club scribe and historian, Steve Ross with his newly resuscitated Buttercup, Marjo Miller, who polished up her 48 Station Sedan just for the occasion, and Schauer brought his 34 sedan. Tom O'Hara wins best in show with his 1934 Convertible Sedan Packard people are always willing to pitch in and help. Steve Ross was recruited as judge along with Bob Gunthorp from the Mercedes Club. That job brings a great deal of pressure, and the two of them did a bang up job (no pun intended). Marjo Miller squeezes her 1948 Woody in between Buttercup blue MOPAR machine. Yours truly is protecting the MOPAR. Brian Wagner's 1940 touring Sedan Packards International San Diego Region Page 7

LEFT: Buttercup and Marjo's 48 Station Sedan Richard Schauer's "34" Touring Sedan next to the Carol Ross 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Coupe It is seldom that we see a modified Packard especially one this well done. It is even rarer that we show one in the Predictor. This is a 1948 Packard 2 door Coupe. The body is mounted on a Camero chassis with a Chevrolet engine and transmission with Cadillac seats. The exterior is not radically modified and the interior is all Packard except for the seats. Phoebe and her team conducted a drawing, auction, raffle, gift sale, and a Cake Walk which sold off several delicious cakes made by the fine ladies. For me the most outstanding feature of the entire day was the Tremble Clefs. A musical singing group is comprised of Parkinson s patients, the purpose of their choir being therapy. The byproduct of their group therapy was wonderful, joyous, upbeat, music, which the packed community center enjoyed very much. Their songs today were all car related, my personal favorite being Beep-Beep. Many of us remember that fun song, don t we? While singing two Tremble Clefs members walked gradually across stage, one holding a mockup of the tail fin of a 59 Caddy and the other a little Nash Rambler cardboard mockup which was chasing the Caddy funny. The program ended with Country Roads, with eager audience participation. The concert was wonderful and heartbreaking at the same time, for there, but for the Grace of God, go all of us. 9 Tying One On Brian Wagner They are known by many names: Ty-Rap, Zip tie, cable tie, and tie-wrap and Panduit strap. They come in many colors (especially if you are a devotee of Harbor Freight Tools) and are found in all of our tool boxes. They have simplified and saved many a car project and like many things that we take for granted, they humbly do their job day in and day without fanfare. Civilization owes them a debt of gratitude. Cable ties were patented in 1958 by Thomas & Betts to hold airplane wiring harnesses together. (For Jeopardy contestants: a Boeing 747 has 750,000 feet of wire, or over 140 miles of wiring weighing close to two tons). Maurus C. Logan worked for Thomas & Betts and was the inventor. The ah ah moment came to Logan when he was touring a Boeing plant in Aircraft wiring back then involved thousands of feet of wiring organized on sheets of 50 foot long plywood and held in place with knotted, wax-coated braided nylon cord. Each and every knot had to be pulled tight by wrapping the cord around one s fingers which wreaked havoc on tender digits. For the next two years, Logan experimented with various materials and concepts and finally submitted his patent on June 24, 1958 for Ty-Raps. The first Ty-Raps required a two-step manufacturing process - first molding the tie and then inserting a metallic pawl. That was not ideal, as the pawl could break off and fall into electrical circuits. This was followed by an adjustable two-piece nylon cable tie, but it still required a two-part manufacturing process. Finally, the modern cable tie was patented in 1968 when All-States, an established cable clamp manufacturer, received one of the first patents for the current design and was the first manufacturer in the U.S. of the self-locking onepiece nylon tie that we know today with its wide range of applications and colors. And the uses are numerous. There are self-locking loops based on the construction of the traditional tie-wrap called LigaRie used in surgery to compress tissues together to prevent hemorrhaging and shorten the surgery process. (The same material is used as a surgical suture and can be left in and eventually absorbed by the body). Blue ties are used by the food industry and contain a metal additive that can be detected by industrial metal detectors. Red ties made of Halar are used on the various cables that run in buildings air conditioning and heating pathways (plenum cabling). Stainless steel ties are made for fireproof applications. Coated stainless steel ties are available to prevent galvanic attack from dissimilar metals. Cable ties made of Tefzel are used in radiation-rich environments. And as all TV viewers know, PlastiCuffs are handcuffs based on the cable tie design. Not to worry, you will not be tested on all this later. But one last bit of trivia for the Jeopardy contestants out there: a standard cable tie is usually made of Nylon 6.6. Nylon 6.6 is made of a hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid, giving Nylon 6.6 a 12 carbon atoms, hence the name Nylon 6.6. Or as Mr. McGuire proffered in The Graduate : I want to say one word to you. Just one word. Plastics. There s a great future in plastics. Packards International San Diego Region Page 9

In the winners circle t tythis t This is a 1910 Pickard Model H; not a Packard. Fooled me for a bit. The Pickard family built Motor Cars in Brockton, MA. beginning in models of this car were built and this is the only one known in existence. The interior and exterior are original. From the engine design it is obvious they started out with motorcycles. The engine is 4 cylinder, air-cooled, producing 25 HP and can reach speeds of 50 to 55 mph. The Pickard family owns the car. I know this is a Packard publication but sometimes a car is too pretty to pass on without sharing. This is a 1938 Graham 97 Supercharged Cabriolet with body by Saoutchik. 6-cylinder engine with a 3-speed transmission and overdrive. It was the Paris Salon Car for the Saoutchik display in It was sold to a French Army man in 1939 and he took the car to Algeria. The French General liked the car so well he confiscated it and made the owner his chauffeur! An American Chrysler employee in Algeria bought the car from the French army in 1944 and had it shipped to the States from the port of Oran, Algeria. Jacques Saoutchik (born Iakov Savtchuk in Russian Empire in 1880), Saoutchik was a top-class French coach building company founded in In the 1930s, the company became famous for their high quality and often-extravagant designs. After Jacques died in 1955, the company passed into the hands of his son Pierre. With the great French luxury car manufacturers all going out of business, the market for the ostentatious Saoutchik designs evaporated and the company ceased trading in Saoutchik is known for his extensive use of chrome. 16 1937 V-12 Coupe Roadster. There very few of this year and model still in existence Caribbean This Goddess-of-Speed was on sale for a mere $1,300 plus tax and handling. OMG! it can't be, but it is. I was in the basement parking garage of the Ritz-Carlton looking for an R&M auction guy and stumbled across this very rare, one of a kind piece of machinery. I was really surprised to see this and even more surprised that no one was anywhere near or in sight of the automobile. It was just parked there between two new modern cars. I have only heard of this machine so you can imagine my surprise and shock. I never imagined it would ever leave the museum let alone be in the parking garage of a hotel unattended. Anyone care to venture a guess as to the particulars on this automobile? See your May Predictor for more info. Packards International San Diego Region Page 16

Friday June 16, 2017 By Mark Burnside Our annual flagship event, Packard/Pierce-Arrow Cruisin' Grand is right around the corner. Once again, we have secured the Friday closest to the Summer Solstice in order to maximize the amount of daylight we have before heading home while lighting the road with our 6-volt headlights. The date is F r i d a y June 16th. You and your Packard or Pierce-Arrow are invited and encouraged to attend this FREE event. As we do every year, we are extending a cordial invitation to our neighbors to the north, the SoCal Region of PI as well as to the Southern California Region of the Pierce-Arrow Society. Here's the schedule: 6:00 am - Be at TV station KUSI, 4575 Viewridge Avenue, San Diego, with your classic ride for Dave Stall's morning car segment on the Good Morning San Diego Program. Dave will choose and interview several owners about their cars and their history. One never knows who he will pick to talk to. 7:00 am - We all head to the nearby Studio Diner at 4701 Ruffin Road, San Diego for a group breakfast. 3:00 pm - We meet up at Japaleño Grill & Cantina at 503 West Grand Avenue, Escondido for a free beverage and appetizer. The Board of Directors of the Packards International San Diego Region has agreed that our club's treasury will sponsor this event of the day. Expect to spend a leisurely late afternoon swapping stories and talking Packard stuff. Then we'll leave by 4:30 to go form-up for the parade. By 4:45 pm - Have your classic at the corner of East 4th Avenue & South Ivy Street, Escondido to form up for the Parade of Packards & Pierce-Arrows down Grand Avenue 5:00 pm - The Parade of Packards and Pierce-Arrows begins. Parade cars will be single file in y e a r order. Oldest car leads the parade. Of the 26 Cruisin' Grand events held every year, this is the only parade of cars prior to the start of the event. In past years we had a motorcycle police escort courtesy of the Escondido Police Department. We have requested the escort again this year and hope to have confirmation soon. 5:15 pm to 9:00 pm - Your classic buggy is on display on South Broadway for the public to see, appreciate, and admire. Once again, the PI San Diego Region Board of Directors is planning all the niceties that add to the evening: People's Choice Award voting by the public, windshield placards for all preregistered cars, parking in year order, a staffed information booth, and more. The presentation of the People s Choice Award will be made by Steve Waldron, Cruisin Grand Founder and Organizer, at the 8:00 Awards Ceremony. Expect LOTS of questions from the admiring public. (Like: Who made Packards? Is this a hearse? Are you the original owner? When did Mercedes stop making Packards? How do you shift it? etc.) Packards International San Diego Region Page 17

Other fun facts and items of note about this year's event: 1) All Packards and Pierce Arrows are invited to any and all of the day's activities. There is no charge or registration fee. Membership in PI (or any region of PI) is NOT required. Please forward this to ANYONE you know who owns a Packard or Pierce Arrow. Also note that only Packards and Pierce-Arrows can be accommodated at KUSI, in the parade, and at Cruisin' Grand. We do, however, require every Packard and Pierce-Arrow owner to register ahead of time by completing and returning the registration form on the next page. Questions? Call Mark Burnside at ) We will be parked in a special roped-off area of South Broadway. We need to have at least 25 Packards and Pierce-Arrows at the event to maintain this area exclusive to our makes. Fewer than 25 cars means that Cruisin' Grand event organizers can allow non-packards and non- Pierce-Arrow to park in our space. We fervently want to avoid the shame and indignity associated with such an undesirable outcome. 3) You will be on your own for dinner. There are many nice restaurants along Grand Avenue - from $ to $$$$. 4) Cruisin' Grand is a weekly cruise-in sponsored by the City of Escondido - held every Friday night from the first Friday in April to the last Friday in September. On each Friday a classic vehicle organization is invited to display their vehicles in a special roped-off area for the evening. This event is special: It's an incredible outreach opportunity for us to present our classic motorcars to a (very) interested public. Out of the 26 Cruisin' Grand events held each year, Packard/Pierce-Arrow Night ranks a solid #3 in public interest (behind Nitro Night and Fire Truck Night). Attendance for Packard/Pierce-Arrow Night in previous years has been estimated at 5,000+. With this kind of interest and enthusiasm from the public, it only makes sense for us to mobilize every roadworthy Packard and Pierce-Arrow for the event. We sincerely hope that you will join us.
