6 How To Determine Engine and Pinion Angle Engine, pinion angle and ride height are all relative to the ground. Most engines are set at 3 degrees, when you look at the side of the intake manifold on a carburetor engine you will notice the manifold has a wedge in it. This wedge is to allow the carburetor to sit level. The main purpose of having an engine angle is to allow for more room in the passenger compartment by having a smaller tunnel. That is why the car manufacturers build front engine cars with the engine at an angle. Drag race cars have a 2 to 3 degree negative engine angle, the engine will tip down in front. Having this negative angle allow for better weight transfer to the rear of the chassis. The 3 degrees you keep hearing about is the recommended angle for carburetor cars with intake manifolds set at 3 degrees. With the engine and pinion set at 3 degrees they do not line up directly and requires you to make them parallel. This misalignment allow the u-joints to rotate on a street car. You can set up the engine angle at almost any degree just as long as the transmission is perfectly inline with the pinion yoke. However, when the engine and pinion yoke is in direct line, it does not allow for the rotation of the u-joints. This straight alignment is mostly used on drag race cars. If you look under your car and check the pinion angle you will notice it is the same angle as the engine/transmission (they are parallel). A good example of having negative engine/pinion angle is when you lower a 1 ton crew cab where you lower the front more than the rear and there is quite a rake. In this case you have to put a wedge on the back side of the saddles to tip the pinion angle down. If you are building a chassis you need to first determine ride height. This is the most important thing you need to do. Decide what wheels and tires you want to use before you pick up the welder. If a chassis builder or a salesman does not ask you what tires you are going to use do not buy from him. How can he build your chassis without know the tire diameters? How can he set up the front end and engine angle? What they do is build a chassis based on what they want or think you should have and not what you want. Now determine the ground clearance you want for your oil pan. Set your motor mounts based on this and the angle to best fits your car. Try to set the transmission directly inline with pinion yoke and if that is not possible set the pinion parallel to the engine angle. Before you weld the brackets on the rear end housing be sure that the rear end was set at ride height, where the rear end would be with the car done. If you find a chassis builder or salesman that says you have to have the engine angle at 3 degrees and there is no other angle you can set if at, find another chassis. He apparently does not understand the principles of setting correct engine and pinion angle. Also no chassis builder can build you a chassis with optimum suspension without knowing proper ride height. Tech tip taken from RoadKill Customs. page 6

8 May 1 st, 2018 Mopars Unlimited Executive Meeting Meeting called to 7:06pm Mopar Madness: Ray has a mock-up of the show artwork, approved by executive John has confirmed 4 food vendors: JapaDog, Old Country Perogies, Slavic Rolls and McGuire s Patty Wagon It was suggested that it would be nice to have tables, chairs & tents for people to eat at. We will address that on the day of if we have enough to spare The area at George Preston where we used to park club cars on the grass now has cement barriers so we will need to relocate them. Ray will figure this out Due to the fact that we have new food vendors, we will no longer be providing lunch to people working at the show, however, anyone who works at the show, they will not have to pay for the Christmas Dinner Collector Car Show Ray received the cheques back from the Collector Car Show that was originally awarded at the 2017 show with the date changed Meeting 7:46pm The 32nd Annual Chrysler Performance West Spring Fling Back in April, Rachelle & I had a fantastic time at the Spring Fling car show which is at Woodley Park in Van Nuys California, part of northern L.A. This is the largest Mopar car show in the western U.S.; the next show of this size is in Chicago. This is the second trip for our 1964 Dodge, Addiction to this show. This was a three-day event that started Friday morning with an 80 mile cruise from Van Nuys to Malibu beach in which more than 50 cars participated. Friday evening we headed for the local hang-out, Big Bob s Restaurant, where over a hundred local cars showed up. We were well received; the locals loved to see a Canadian car show up to their local hang-out. Saturday we were back at Woodley Park for a Show & Shine, and a 500 plus vendor swap meet. Saturday night we headed to a different Big Bob s Restaurant for a Mopar car show that had over a hundred cars show up! Sunday we were back to Woodley park; more car show, this time it was a judged event, and of course more swap meet. Sunday is when lots of super cars showed up to be judged. One of the best parts of Sunday is that Addiction won Best in Class! Monday we loaded up and pounded the highway heading for home; all round a great trip! Story: Ray Myles page 8
9 Province of British Columbia Proclaims COLLECTOR CAR APPRECIATION DAY in July 2018 Thanks to the efforts of the Specialty Vehicle Association of British Columbia (SVABC) and the National Association of Automobile Clubs of Canada (NAACC), the province of British Columbia has again issued proclamations designating Collector Car Appreciation Day and International Collector Car Appreciation Day on July 13-14, 2018 in the province. The province also proclaimed the month of July 2018 to be Automotive Heritage Month and Collector Car Appreciation Month. Earlier this year, the SEMA Action Network (SAN) announced dates in July to mark the ninth commemoration in what has become an annual event to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society. The SAN is again working to secure a U.S. Senate resolution to recognize the day s significance. In the previous seven eight years, thousands of enthusiasts in the U.S and Canada have gathered at car cruises, parades and other events to celebrate our nation s automotive heritage. By taking part in these events around the country, these automotive enthusiasts and related businesses have ensured that their passion was honoured and recognized. Make your plans to get involved. Individuals, car clubs and business owners have been registering their gatherings for inclusion on the SAN website. Please pay tribute to our hobby s special day by holding or attending a celebration near you. Encourage others to follow suit. Let s get those cars and trucks out of the garage and onto the road! The SEMA Action Network (SAN) is a nationwide partnership between vehicle clubs, enthusiasts and members of the specialty auto parts industry who want to protect their hobby. Founded in 1997, the SAN was designed to help stamp out legislative threats to the automotive hobby and pass favourable laws. The SAN regularly: - Rallies the support of 3,000-plus car clubs, thousands of individual contacts, and 100-plus publications, with an estimated reach of 36 million enthusiasts nationwide, amplifying SEMA s political voice on issues affecting the specialty equipment auto parts industry. - Sends out action alerts to generate an abundance of responses to state and/or federal legislative actions and regulatory proposals. - Issues timely updates of legislative and regulatory developments. page 9

11 Members Maintaining Their Mopar Vern recently had to replace the faulty lock cylinder and accessory switch on his 1970 Duster 340, 4 speed. While some may see this as a bit of misfortune when they would rather be out cruising in their baby, a true Moparian sees this as an opportunity to spend time getting to know the inner workings of their Mopar. Below is Vern s accounting of his time in the garage. First disconnect the battery, get your self a good light. remove the under steering cover, and the steering column holding plate. Now you have to unplug the accessories wiring plug, remove the horn, steering wheel, and the signal switch. There is lots of wiring so you just let it hang off the column. There is a small hole in the column above the lock cylinder, push in a small pick tool, this releases the lock cylinder. Remove 3 screws on the accessories switch and pull it out the old cylinder. Push the new lock cylinder into position and slide the wiring for the accessories switch back down the column. Reinstall the screws, plug the wiring in and put all the other parts back in the order you took them out. Connect the battery, start the engine, make sure every thing works, and most importantly Take your baby out for a Cruz! page 11
