The Prez Sez... May 2011 Well, I missed the last (April) meeting. The mighty Spurlock Station required my attendance. Hope everyone had a good time. I was trying to think of a good topic to talk about this time; as I was organizing some of my car magazines, my family accused me of being a hoarder. A hoarder? Now I have a topic! The dictionary states that hoarding is the excessive acquisition of possessions (and failure to use or discard them, even if the items are worthless). Uh oh! Just because I keep all of my old car magazines (in an orderly fashion I may say), collect a few cars, car models, spare parts for emergency situations and visit ebay or craigslist for those needed items, does that make me a hoarder? Just because I keep the babies in their beds during those cold winter or rainy days, is that failure to use? Are the car magazines any different than other sources of knowledge in public libraries? Are librarians and custodians of rare artifacts hoarders? Am I any different from any of the other car guys out there? What do you guys think? Are there any other Club members that may be inclined to do some of these same things? I think I live a healthy, normal life. I can still get my front door open well unless I left my work boots in the way. I m sure you guys can too. I remain dead fast the car hobby is a quest to enjoy automotive diversity. It s appreciating the engineering, artistic beauty and complexity of these fine machines. It s part of our American history. We are preserving and passing on to future generations the automobile. It is an important mission (if you agree to accept it); it s not hoarding. Speak out my fellow comrades! On a different note, we are planning to have Corvairs on the River this year at our condo in Ripley. The possible dates are August 6 th and/or 13 th. We need to lock down what works best at the next meeting. Also, I stumbled across the June edition of Classic Car (I think my family tried to hide it), and there is a nice article about Cotrofeld Automotive. They have been in business for 70 years, and Corvairs are their specialty. Check it out. Looks like they have a lot of neat stuff (hoarders I wonder?). See you at the next meeting... Vairs Rule!!!
Just-A-Minute April 8, 2011 Meeting called to order by Spencer at 8:05 p.m. There were 17 members in attendance. Minutes of the March meeting were approved by Dave Schwettman and seconded by Don Berding. Mike reported a balance of $4, in the Club treasury. OLD BUSINESS Mike and Spencer reported on the Corvair Performance Workshop held last month. They both agreed that it was a very informative and enjoyable time. Spencer took his V-8 Vair to the event. NEW BUSINESS The members in attendance decided to hold the Corvairs on the River event at Prez Joe's home on Saturday, August 6 th, with a rain date of August 13 th. The Mid-Ohio Race days will be held on June Jim Schardt is planning on competing in the vintage race in his Corvair Stinger. The Mad Anthony Corvair Club has invited us to join them for their car show and swap meet in Fort Wayne on June 3 rd and 4 th. Our own Doug Simon reported that he finally was able to get an engine back into his car after having suffered numerous problems with the original engine he had built for it. Motion to adjourn by Don B. and seconded by Dave. Meeting adjourned at 9:17 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Ralph Gubser, Secretary
May 13, 2011 Meeting called to order by 8:05 p.m. There were 18 in attendance. Mike reported a balance of $4, in the Club treasury. OLD BUSINESS: The Mid-Ohio meet will be held in Dublin, OH on July 9 th. The Corvair Olympics will take place in Indianapolis June The Hamilton parade will be held on July 23 rd. We have received inquiries about the parade from members of some other Corvair clubs. It was proposed that our club provide some gifts to be raffled off. Anyone from another Corvair club who brings a Corvair to the parade will be entered in the raffle. Corvairs on the River at Prez Joe's home will be held on August 6 th, with a rain date of August 13 th. NEW BUSINESS: The Club will hold a tech session at Don Berding's home on Saturday, June 11 th. This event will take the place of the normal monthly meeting. We will be installing a new transmission and differential into Don Filkins' Corvair limo. Pizza will be served for lunch. Ladies are cordially invited to attend for lunch and a trip to the nearby Hollywood Casino while the guys perform the transaxle swap. We are also looking into finding a carrelated event somewhat nearby to attend later that evening. You can MapQuest directions to Don's house at 6860 Brooks Road, Harrison, OH His phone # is (513) if you need any other info about the event. A suggestion was made to consider making a donation to the City of Mt. Healthy in appreciation for their generosity in allowing us to use their meeting room every month. We will follow-up on this at a later date. Motion to adjourn by Roger; seconded by Don Berding. Meeting 8:42 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Ralph Gubser, Secretary
Editor s Corner Club website: In the April Negative Camber, the story Why 1969 CORVAIRS? was run. Inadvertently, I published the article without proper credit to the writer, Mark Ellis. It is part of his Fingertip Facts publication. Please accept my apologies for the error. Doug Simon HAPPY BIRTHDAY & HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to all those who celebrated and/or will be celebrating during the months of May and June! The below information was provided by the Columbus Club regarding the 2011 Mid- Ohio Meet. Please visit for more information, registration, etc. FYI: There is a show-within-a-show class layout; looks like Corvairs will be located in Area 27. The Mid-Ohio Vair Force is hosting the Mid-Ohio Meet as part of the Classic Auto Show on July 9 th at the Dublin Metro Center near Exit 17A from I-270, northwest of Columbus, 555 Metro Place North, Dublin, OH You can pre-register on-line at arthritisautoshow.com or by mail using a form that can be downloaded from that site, or you can register on-site on Saturday, July 9 th from 7:30 until 11:30 a.m. Volunteers will direct you to the registration area or, if you ve pre-registered, directly to the Corvair area. Registration is $30 per car (which includes the people in it) or $10 per person for general admission. We re told that 87 cents of every dollar will go to the Arthritis Foundation, the show's traditional beneficiary. The Mid-Ohio Vair Force will not charge a registration, but we will accept small donations from those who'd like to help us defray some expenses. At this point we re planning a cash drawing but no door prizes. You won't need to contribute anything in the way of food, door prizes, etc., because we're keeping things simple. We figure the big car show will occupy most folks, there'll be time to chat among ourselves as usual, and there'll be food and beverage service from vendors set up not far from the Corvair location. We will offer free bottled water and packaged snacks. You should bring lawn chairs and coolers with your own refreshments and food, if you wish, but there ll be no cookout and no pot luck contributions. We will set up a tent or canopy as a headquarters in the Corvair area. You ll go there after entering the complex, or after on-site registration if you need to. Corvairs will park together, and we re told that non-corvairs will park not far away. There will be car judging as part of the main Classic Auto Show. As part of that, there ll be five Corvair trophies (two each for Early and Late, and one for Forward Control), and there ll be one trophy for Peoples Choice, which you and other Meet attendees will vote on, as in past years. If you need further information, please contact Tom Berg, Mid-Ohio Vair Force, Thanks for your help!
The Canadian Corvair V8 Project Submitted by Joe VonDerHaar As many of you know, our Club member (and current VP), Spencer Duffey, always has something up his Corvair sleeve. He is very active and, like the rest of us, has more projects than he has time to complete. Now retired, he is putting the hammer down on some of his cool ideas. Last year you may have seen his 66 Faux Stinger. It has fuel injection and is set up to go auto crossing. He took it to the national CORSA convention, and it was a big hit. If you made it to the picnic last year at the Lemmerman s, you probably saw it, it was there. That is just one of Spencer s latest creations. There are several more and very diverse (Spencer has the automotive diversity disease). Spencer is full of ideas. The only one I m going share with you now is his V8 project. I m not authorized (and neither is Wilma) to discuss or divulge the others; you will have to ask Spencer yourself. Spencer saw a gold late model, Canadian, coupe at a Corvair Performance Workshop a few years back. It was a very solid car with a fresh gold paint job and no engine. I noticed him admiring it, but he said nothing (I think the wheels were turning). Fast forward to 2010; at one of our monthly meetings, Spencer owns up to buying the car. He had been negotiating behind the scenes for some time. He goes on to explain the V8 idea. He had contracted LeVair Performance to do the deed. The car is not complete but it is breathing. Micheal LeVeque had it at the Performance Workshop this year, and it was the first time I saw it. It is cool and will be a mean machine when complete. Following are several photos enjoy. Thanks, Spencer, for sharing your project.

ATTENTION CLUB MEMBERS, Last night (May 13 th ) at our monthly meeting, we discussed having a tech session at Don Berding's house on Saturday, June 11 th. The plan is to work on Don Filkens limo. We will begin at 11:00 a.m. with pizza and then get to work. Don thought the ladies may want go down to the Argosy boat (n/k/a Hollywood Casino) while the guys work on the car. It is about 15 minutes from his house. There were 11 to 14 folks interested at last night s meeting, so the event is a go. If you are interested, please give Don a call so we can be sure to order enough pizza, (513) Don's address is: 6860 Brooks Road Harrison, Ohio It will be a good time. Joe
