Car Gwyllt Special Incoming s From Andrew Waldron Hello Jackie. I was at the Ripon & District Light Railway open day last Saturday the 13th June. A member name unknown bought along his 2ft gauge replica slate quarry incline car and it was demonstrated on a section of the line over about 100ft of track, that being the only hill on the railway at the home of Neil Clayton at Ripon. The Wild car had two, the passive rear brake metal to metal contact friction brake (no wheel) that sat around the rail head and the active, lever operated front brake. 6 Incoming s From Ralph Beaumont Thanks for doing these newsletters Jacqui. I enjoy reading every one of them. We were just at the Alberta Railway Museum, just north of the city of Edmonton in Canada, and a shed was full of all kinds of wonders. The jumble included two vintage wood-wheeled velocipedes, a modern build track pedal bicycle, and a mini-motorised four wheeled vehicle. Looks like maybe a lawnmower engine. Outside there was a typical pump hand car as well. What are the two black plates attached to the bike outrigger? The very best kind of shed to find, an instant Hand Power Rail Rally. The wheels are lovely old curved spoke castings, and the lathe hand wheel for operating the brake is great. The piece of wood lying flat at the front is where I would expect a fold down seat back. (But this could be a wall display board, of what I cannot imagine!) The swept down brackets to the lifting bar may be a foot rest for an inspector, sitting on the deck with his back against the folding seat back. Pump Car in Outeniqua Transport Museum, George, South Africa This machine looks nothing like the 1940 s SAR set of drawings on our website Downloads South African Railways Pump Car. But the original machine could have belonged to the Cape Government Railways, founded 1872, well before the 2 nd Boer War, , during which all the Railways were put under Imperial control and then later became SAR in 1910

9 Incoming s From Ralph Beaumont Hi Jacqui, Ran across this artifact in Barry's Bay, Ontario, Canada, about two hours west of the national capital at Ottawa. It's just sitting on display outside, so I hope they take it in for the winter. The plaque calls it a Quadracycle - don't know if it was homemade or something manufactured. Don't have internet handy, so maybe you or another reader can let us know if you've seen a similar one in person or in a catalogue. The wheels look manufactured, and even though it's chained to the rail, there's enough travel that I can tell it would run really smoothly. It s a Hartley and Teetor It must have been a bit of a rough ride, because each spoke goes through the tire, leaving a little riveted bump. One of the tires is severely wasted, so it wouldn't run again unless fixed. It should have Rubber Tyres around the tread, see below. It has a single centrally-mounted seat - so one rider only. See Newsletters No. 41 Hartley and Teetor Special. The OA&PS referred to in the plaque was the Ottawa, Arnprior & Parry Sound Rly - a cross-country line linking Georgian Bay with Ottawa. It was envisioned as a short cut for shipping western grain, but also tapped the rich forest stands for lumbering in the interior.

10 It was eventually taken over by what became Canadian National Railway, and although mostly abandoned I guess in the 1960s, the line as far as Barry's Bay continued into the 1990s. It hosted steam train excursions for a while, but now all the tracks are gone. The station survives as a tourist information centre, as does this wooden water tower. The pole and circular board extending from the top showed the water level - now empty of course. The large central portion at the base housed a huge wood stove - otherwise in this country the water would freeze solid, just like a giant ice cube. You can see the stove pipe also extending above the roof.

Cast iron flanges chip easily and need gentle treatment. The poles are stored under the car and the highlights on the crank pins can be seen. Those highlights on the polished pins make the identification of a poling car certain. Poling Car by the Great Eastern Company s Works, Stratford, England. There is now a sand bin next to the Poling Car. Some wonderful well kept allotments for vegetable and fruit growing have appeared on the unused trackside land. These were rented to railway staff to help feed their families, they were common, especially during the two World Wars. No Trees were harmed in the making of this enewsletter.

13 Track Weeding From Lary Shaffer in Maine AFTER I am out on my handcar about once a week now and as a bit of pay back, I work pulling up little trees that have grown up very near the rails. The worst of these have been clipped at the tops many times but continued to live. Now they have trunks as big as my wrist and a big root system, but just a little puff ball of branches on top. I am ripping these out by the roots with a 3 ton hand winch chained to the rail. Here is an example of before and after: BEFORE Mechanical methods have been tried on Pump Cars (below), superseded by Flame Weeders and then drenching with Weed Killer, today s not very green, preferred method.
