3 Brakes Spragging, parking with the metal ended pole between the spokes, Gap for the pole brake. The Poling Car brake is very basic. A gap in the boards and you put the pole down between the wheels and lean on the pole. Do not drop the Pole. Whitemoor Yards, GER 1930 s, in use as a push car. This has a backing steel plate, the pin has a washer welded on and it is threaded and nutted on the back, an invisible and much safer job, given the loads on the pin.

5 Book Review It s a photo book full of Ahhh s, from a quiet planet running on a much slower clock than ours I could not resist a book with a Great Eastern Railway Poling Car on the cover, particularly one with the most rustic poles I have seen, these are straight out of the hedge. The Great Eastern was a railway of vast contrasts, Liverpool Street and the close headway Jazz commuter trains into London, the enormous Decapod technology demonstrator and wonderful pottering rural lines. This is a rural backwater picture book, big photos, clearly printed. Allotments and enamels, Long dresses and tiny corseted waists, fainting and smelling salts, top hated coachmen waiting for The Master at the station. The Southwold is covered with three good photos, pre 1929 closure. The Mid Suffolk Light Railway has 6 evocative photos. John Jolly attends our Rallies with a Poling Car like the one on the book cover and collects complete Station buildings from this line, A most chilling 1914 poster is in the back cover photo. How many of the men in the photo came back? 6 Captive Poling Car Imperial German 1870 to 1918 (now in Poland) James Went has used his detective skills on this post card, the Station is Schwarz Damerkow. After 1945 it was in Poland and named Czarna Dabrowka. The poling car is on a parking track at right angles to the main line. There is some timber on the layby track to chock the car. The poles appear to be captive at the waist level hand rail and fixed on the crank pins. The British and Danish machines were much more makeshift, without proper brakes. This has had a thorough Health and Safety treatment, you cannot drop a pole on this car.

The Original Post Card, I know Bahnhof is German so I asked around for a German Speaker at my Quaker meeting (they are a well-educated bunch) and was told it did not look like German, so I started seeking a Polish Speaker. However, James Went who spent his youth doing Palaeography (Newsletter 50 on the websitewww.velocipedes.co.uk downloads), offered to decode the handwritten letters used. James realised the letters were unusual but might be German, so he sent the puzzle to Andrew Plant who is a linguist with both German and Russian. From James Went Dear Jacqui, This is the definitive version, which shows I'd got two of the words wrong in my attempt. Andrew, the German linguist, says that this style of German handwriting hasn't been taught since WW2, and he finds Russian easier to decipher! The best examples of this are the very first letter which is a "B", not "L", and the middle of the third line where "it" is apparently a capital "A" with a high cross bar. 8 Build One Australian 2 foot or 2 6 Poling Car Book Review Rails to old Walhalla by Nick Anchen. Published by Sierra Publishing, Ferntree Gully, Victoria, Australia. First edition, ISBN sierra@netspace.net.au The book has a photo of the machine which is drawn opposite. It s a photo book from a Colonial Edwardian town full of corrugated iron Galvo buildings, off the shelf, ordered by mail from catalogues. Just like Sears Roebuck in the USA or Boulton and Paul in Africa. Lysart was the big Australian manufacturer. Walhalla, Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. Once one of Australia s richest towns. Gold was found in 1863, and by 1900, 55 tonnes of gold had been extracted. The town peaked at 4,000 residents with 13 pubs and is now down to 15, residents not pubs! The pole being shoved into the gap made by a short deck board and leant on to act as brake. The pole being used to propel the car The 2 6 Railway arrived in 1910 just in time for the rundown of the mines. The railway slowly retreated and was gone by the 1960 s but is being rebuilt step by step as the Walhalla Goldfields Railway. The town was a symphony of galvo and exquisite colourful hand painted signwriting. The Band Rotunda is a Gem that still exists in Walhala, it is too good to lose. The town is now a tourist site. The wheels could be made from the ones Mark Hambly is selling, with wood spokes, laser cut centres and backing discs & Steel Crank Pins. You would have to cut a slice off the backs of the wheel flanges to get the 2 gauge back to back of 21 ¾.

9 A full up to date listing of the Society s archive material is available on their website, at Book Review This is a facsimile reprint of an original 1915 Robert Hudson catalogue from the Narrow Gauge Railway Society s own archive posted to a UK address (book sales details). There is no obvious method of braking, so it would have given exciting rides? Drawing on following page. The other hand power in the book are 2 pump cars, A281 is a standard gauge Sheffield Inspection Car & A283 is a narrow gauge Buda pump car. 90 fascinating sides. You could weld a laser cut boss to old 12 cast steel Hudson wheels, with 7 curved spokes, (shown in the book) like the ones above,

10 The pole is very like a paddle with a round handle and a flat blade. The paddle has a raised steel plate, with the hole, bolted to each side.

Walking Beam It is not a post war Wickham, the walking beam is wrong But it could be pre-war Wickham post war Sheffield walking beam 1932, fire welded. Fire welded, but early ones had slightly bigger eyes for the handle. Wheels Wickham steel 12 spoke 20, flat centre boss. It s in a Greek museum? From the name. Frames, Seats, Gallows, Skirting and Brake Rigging are unlikely to be original. The parts that last well over the decades are the Walking Beam, Wheels and Gears. The gears are hidden so we only have the other 2 parts to consider. The two contenders for wheel maker are Wickham and Sheffield. I would guess Sheffield, the flat riveted wheel boss on Sheffield s is smaller than on Wickham s, and the tear drops were longer finishing closer to the edge, but as always I could be wrong. Editor. Sheffield steel 12 spoke 20, after 1906 these had the same flat boss as Wickham but smaller and the tear drops were longer. You takes 1894 ribbed centre your choice.

13 From Ralph Beaumont Hi Jacqui. The locale of Three Valley Gap in the mountains of British Columbia has a chateau style hotel and restaurant, as well as a full size frontier village featuring restored buildings and thousands of artefacts from the region. It even has a full size railway roundhouse with many passenger cars, three old velocipedes and even a couple steam locomotives. There's a 2'6" railway that takes kids around the grounds and over the winter their staff built this cute little kid-sized Velocipede (Draisine). Plans are to let kids take it for rides around the loop. Cheers. The next Build One Pump Car project is progressing, a Wickham 4057 of 1946 Steel frame 1 ½ inch angle Gallows drawing Gallows weld tacking jig First two tacked up Connecting rod bottom, top. Batch of 3 Cleaning crank cheeks. Batch of 5 ready for welding. This is a beaut Draisine with disc wheels and is a masterclass in re using bike bits. It is one of the simplest ones I have seen.
