Geoffrey Holme Danish Railway Museum, Odense. Geoffrey paid a visit to Denmark recently and has passed on his photos of hand powered machines. This is a Lever operated Geared Crank Car. The Gears New Builders could use the 18 & 6 gears kindly designed by Mark Egerton for the Group.

4 The Green Inspection Car below may have the same mechanism as above but with two upright levers and a joining cross piece for propelling. I believe the inspectors footstep hinges up onto the seat to allow access to the two lifting handles Blue arrows for removing the car from the track The museum has a much-rebuilt Sheffield Pump Car. 6 First Type open ended from 1879 to Second Type closed end. They have a Sheffield Velocipede from the 1890s with the second type closed end axle boxes, introduced in 1894 Click on For the whole Catalogue

9 Intrigue from Gareth Roberts Hi Jacqui, A few days ago I was looking at a well-known (published) photo of a train on the original Welsh Highland Railway (Baldwin coaches + a Pway truck on the rear). Now, we know that Col Stephens was an avid purchaser of ex-ww1 equipment for FR/WHR and other lines (Simplex Mary Ann, Baldwin Tractor Moelwyn, Baldwin 590, US Speeder Busta, some wagons & crane etc). In the attached snip, I wonder if we are seeing the Chassis of an US Army pump car? I'd never heard about one on the WHR/FR before. Cheers, Gareth

10 It is definitely Sheffield and resembles the Pump car from the deck down, see photo below. I have never seen one of the hundreds of Sheffield Push Cars built at the same time as the Hand Pump Cars. Could this be one of the Sheffield Push Cars, using common parts and jigs? 15 From Philip Bedford Hello Jacqui Time for a quick update from Ireland on what we are up to at the Cavan & Leitrim Railway, our first Bergbolagen project the yellow one has proved a great success, it is very popular with visitors to our museum and already hundreds of adults and children have cycled it on our 3ft gauge track, so much so we would like to build a second one. The first tricycle was built up from original parts kindly donated to us by Mr. Andrew Wilson, there were not enough parts to build a second machine, but there was a lower frame, suspension parts and 2 wheels plus the disc and rings for a rear wheel, everything else would have to be made from scratch, a nice little project! We have made good progress, a new outrigger has been welded up and painted, I have all the original parts cleaned down, primed with zinc phosphate primer and top coated in green, I have built up the rear wheel with new spacers, bolts and nuts, this is now assembled and painted, and looks nice, the front wheel was missing a spoke so one had to be made out of steel bar and welded in, this is now ready for painting, the uprights to carry both the saddle and the handlebars are missing, so replacements have been made out of scrap heating pipe, we still need to make new front forks. It pays to keep your eyes open, sometimes important parts cost nothing at all, I found the 12 spacers, bolts and nuts for the rear wheel in a skip, the 12 spacers are the centre shafts from ball races that had failed under load and disintegrated, by chance they are 25mm long which is exactly what was needed, I was lucky to get enough to do the complete wheel and have a few spares, the 80mm bolts are from the same source, the threads are damaged at the midpoint, but ok at the ends where we need them!, the lengths of water pipe for the uprights I was lucky to find in my workplace, left behind by plumbers after a repair job and almost thrown out. at Dromed in Ireland I hope you find the photos useful, I arranged the components for the rear wheel for a photo, as it might be useful to anyone thinking of building a replica. I have purchased a very nice vintage 1950s Wrights W5 saddle from ebay for this project, it will exactly match the one I purchased for the yellow tricycle, once again ebay is very useful for tracking down these items. Just to recap these tricycles were part of a batch purchased by Bord na Mona (The Irish Turf Board) in 1957 from the Bergbolagen Company in Stockholm, Sweden, they were colour coded depending on which bog they worked on, the Yellow one was used on Clonsast Bog in County Kildare, the Green one was used on Boora Bog in County Offaly. I will have to send the photos in 2 batches, I will also send you the photos as jpegs later today, hopefully I will be able to send you a photo of the assembled in the next few weeks if we can keep the project moving.
