5 Industry Report Industry Report ICT Job Market Outlook April 2011 Once again PIKOM was in collaboration with Jobstreet.com and KPMG Malaysia to publish the ICT Job Market Outlook April 2011 series. On the overall, the job market confidence in Malaysia is good, as reflected in the JECI of Jobstreet.com. Nonetheless, the average salary of ICT professionals moved up on an average by only 6.6%, from RM5,276 to RM5,626. The low movement could be attributed to economic slow-down experienced due to Global Financial Crisis However, this growth is poised to move up by 10.4% in 2011 and the average Monthly salary is expected to touch RM6,210 in the ICT sector. For the first time the study did look at the average salary netted by ICT professionals in the region. The investigation revealed that Hong Kong ICT professional earn almost three times higher and two and half times higher in Singapore; and China is equally competitive with Malaysia. This benchmarking warrants due attention from the ICT industry players both in the ICT producing and user sectors to ensure the local ICT professionals are well paid to prevent loss of talent to neighbouring countries. ICT Strategic Review ICT Strategic Review 2011/12: Transcending into High Value is third in its series. The first two series carried the theme: Innovation the Way Forward and e-commerce for Global Reach respectively. This year s theme is indeed, in line with the Government s aspirations to transform the nation into a high income economy by 2020 when the country is deemed to achieve its developed status. Under normal circumstances it may be a formidable task for the nation to achieve its desired goals especially when the country easily becomes vulnerable to externalities such as the Asia Financial Crisis 1998 and Global Financial Crisis 2009; both crises have retarded Malaysia s steady growth. Aligning with the national inspiration, PIKOM once again mobilised the knowledge and experiences of policy formulators in the mainstream, industry players and academia as well as subject matter specialists to realise this third series. Contributions covered included endogenous growth, harnessing technology power, adopting cloud computing, nurturing outsourcing sector, creating values through analytics, smart living, narrowing urban divides, managing cyber securities and improving quality and process capabilities towards creating high maturity in software developments. Indeed, PIKOM believes that these are some of drivers of potential growth areas directly or indirectly, and they can stimulate high value adding economy. This third series explicitly included an article on moving towards a matured software industry through deployment of Capability Maturity Model Integration Constellations (Development, Acquisitions and Services), People Capability Maturity Model and Six Sigma practices. As ICT businesses become more complex and sophisticated, the risks also increase in parallel, particularly cyber risks involving global businesses. There are many more areas of business concerns. Due to limitations, however, only key topics were incorporated in the publication.
