2 WHAT WE RE READING SUPPLIERS ON TRACK FOR RECORD ACQUISITIONS The auto industry's rush to develop self-driving vehicles, connected cars, and electric vehicles has goaded suppliers into a feeding frenzy of acquisitions. This year, suppliers are expected to complete a record $57 billion worth of acquisitions, nearly double the value of deals in 2016, according to a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers. The consulting firm added up 203 acquisitions that either closed or are expected to close this year, up from 166 in Deal makers were motivated by self-driving vehicles, connected cars, and fuel economy, said Dietmar Ostermann, leader of PwC's automotive advisory team and co-author of the report. Ostermann added: " are trying to find out what it really means for them and to what degree they need to change. Automotive News THE NEW MOBILITY: AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES AND THE AFTERMARKET The technology development in the autonomous vehicle space has been rapid. OEMs, Tier 1s, start-ups, and universities have all been working feverishly, with many industry tie ups and expensive M&A activities. In fact, many OEMs have publically stated that their autonomous technology will reach a Level 4 stage (full autonomy with no need for a steering wheel) between 2020 and There s no doubt that the automotive aftermarket impact will be significant. Four potential impacts include: (i) more fleet business for repair shops (ii) no more customers at their door (iii) autonomous vehicles rarely crash and (iv) autonomous vehicles are full of software and high-end electronics. Industry disruption is coming, and autonomous vehicles will be a key player in this change. Business operators will need to think about how to adjust their operations in the New Mobility environment. AutoServiceWorld RISING REVENUES AT AUTO PARTS STORES AND DEALERSHIPS While auto sales have been slumping in the U.S. this year, revenues are rising at dealerships and auto-parts stores. Older vehicles grinding out more miles each month require repairs and replacement parts. Car dealers didn t use to handle so much repair work. But when the auto market last contracted in 2008 and 2009, new-car retailers looking for a revenue boost improved their service business to win share from independent shops. They ve managed to keep a lot of that profitable work even as new-vehicle sales recovered. By 2025, Continental sees the global market for automated driving technology to be worth 30 billion ($36 billion). I don t think vehicles of today will disappear from the market, but there is a demand in the market for alternative technology like robo cars, Andree Hohm, head of Continental s self-driving car project, tells media.
