2 One s destination is never a place but a new way of seeing things. ~ Henry Miller That said, our new program book is titled Welcomed By God/ Welcoming All wherein God asks us to welcome people of all abilities, being prepared and equipped to act and advocate on behalf of all people of all abilities. In other words, seeing things in a new way. There are many challenges for our mission God leads, we follow always remembering he has given us the abilities to carry through the task at hand. Ephesians 4:3-7. Being strong in our faith is our foundation. The Spiritual Day Apart, March 14, Bethlehem UMC, will focus on disabilities, in particular those who use service animals. There is much to learn from those in need and of the great service these animals are able to give to their persons, thus giving a renewed sense of hope. I had seen these animals and their persons here and there and, of course, have seen some seeing eye dogs and without much thought. BUT one day I was in the grocery when here came one by me. I had a flash of thought ~ I am not sure how I feel about one being in the grocery. Then just as quickly, God whammed me up the side of my head and said, Why not, there is the need in front of you. And I shed tears of shame. We have a speaker lined up who will explain the special bond and healing process for those in need. And our prayer is we will all be enlightened and may share with others. At the end of the program, we will have a special prayer service. Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much. ~ Helen Keller Judith Tate Spiritual Growth Chairperson Ephesians 4:3-7King James Version (KJV) 3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. 7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. 3 SOCIAL ACTION DID YOU KNOW? The latest Action Alerts have been about Climate Change, Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking. I was shocked by the Alert focusing on Human Trafficking; it says 85% OF CONFIRMED SEX TRAFFICKING VICTIMS IN THE WORLD ARE IN THE UNITED STATES. MOST OF THESE ARE RUNAWAY CHILDREN!! The United States Department of Justice estimates that there are 200,000 American Children at risk for trafficking into the sex industry alone. A study conducted in New York by Covenant House and Fordham University found that nearly 50% of those who participated in commercial sexual activity said they did so because they have no place to stay, they are homeless. Also, it has been reported that Tennessee is one of 3 states where most Human Trafficking takes place. Sex Traffickers are skilled at manipulating child victims and maintaining control over them by a combination of violence, deception, lies, threats and feigned affection. I am giving you this information because the first step to correcting a problem is knowing a problem exists. How frightening it is to learn that most of the victims are children. Please pass this information along to your family and friends Hugs to My UMW sisters. Kay Page District Social Action Coordinator ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery, and is the second largest criminal industry in the world after drug trade. Traffickers force vulnerable persons into contract slavery, forced labor and sexual trafficking.
