5 1. GENERAL FEATURES The 22 series belongs to the RMT 20 family of straight way globe style control valves and is characterized by single seat, heavy top guided and quick change design. The 22 series has been developed as a very versatile controlling device to solve a wide range of control valve application problems. You can use to control process liquids, gases and vapors under moderate pressure/temperature service conditions. 22 series has been engineered with a wide range of constructions options (trims, materials, actuation, instrumentation, ) that make it suitable to offer high performances also for mild and severe fluid conditions. 6 EXTREME VERSATILITY FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE EXTREME VERSATILITY This versatile control valve series allows customers to solve a multitude of applications using a common platform. HIGH CAPACITY DESIGN Stream- flow guiding bodies allow high capacity solutions and very flexible flow characterization. HEAVY TOP GUIDING Plug is heavy top guided to ensure valve maximum stability for the best performances under the most severe conditions. Reduced mechanical vibrations and flowing turbulences induced are also one of the key features of enhanced reliability of 22 series. TRIM CONSTRUCTION 22-series has been engineered to offer a compact and cheap solution keeping guarantee of high performance and reliability. All 22 series has top guided unbalanced design, which allow covering a wide range of moderate pressure/temperature applications, even the mildest ones. The only limitation, due to the actuator size, is the port diameter: 22 series is allowable up to DN150 (6 ). Trim is engineered to offer a smooth behavior for superior process control. Unbalanced construction guarantee excellent performances also with dirty, corrosive, sticking and slightly abrasive fluids. Design makes also possible to reach tight shut-off (class VI) where required. 6

7 WIDE RANGE OF PACKING SOLUTIONS In order to satisfy any special requirement in term of low emission different suitable packing solutions are provided. ACTUATION AND ADVANCED DIGITAL POSITIONING CONTROL Pneumatic spring diaphragm or pneumatic piston are typically used in actuation of 22 series valves. In addition, hydraulic or electric actuators are available on request. Actuator stability is coupled with superior valve positioning: in order to allow the best process control, advanced valve diagnostic is available. Smart communication hardware and software provide real-time preventive and predictive diagnostic data. Best brands are available and skilled technicians at complete disposal. WIDE RANGE OF MATERIAL The 22 series control valves have been developed to cover a wide range of applications, also the most mild and severe, with dirty, corrosive but also sticking and slightly abrasive fluids. Material are carefully selected to face up every process condition. Sour service material class are available and exotic materials can be provided. As a brand of GIVA Group, RMT is perfectly integrated with the steel mills, forges and machining shops of the company. RMT has the full support of an own advance metal testing laboratory located next to the factory. TRIM SELECTION The wide variety of trim types let us to develop a suitable design solution to manage the effects of flashing, cavitation and noise practically in every process condition. MATERIAL SELECTION We put a great attention to material selection, especially with reference to the trim ones. We can guide you through the best choice at the best cost even under the most severe conditions of fluid temperature/pressure combination. SEAT TIGHTNESS Depending on customer requests we can guarantee seat leak class IV (standard) but we can also achieve class V and class VI (tight shut off). 8

11 2.1 BODY Bodies of 22 series valves have a large stream - flowguiding design that allows both high capacity solutions and very flexible flow characterization with the right trim characteristic selection. All types of end connections can be provided as per ASME B16.5 design: refer to product specification section. Raised face, ring Joint, butt-welded, socket welded and even threaded types are available. Cast bodies are the standard of construction, but for the smallest size, that means up to 3 (DN 80), solutions by wrought or bar steels can be provided. Forged bodies can be taken into account for angle or special applications. 22 series are available with all sizes up to 6 (DN 150). Ratings from ASME 150 up to ASME 2500 can be provided: refer to product specification tables. Special constructions on request. Face to face dimensions are as per IEC : refer to overall weights and dimensions paragraph. Flow direction: 22 series has a flow to open design as a standard feature. Flow to close application is feasible. Materials of constructions depend on the combination of fluid type, pressure rating and design temperature. A lot of Carbon, Stainless and Cr-Mo Steels allow to cover any customer requirement. Exotic materials are available. For rating tables refer to product spec. section. 12 2.2 BONNET Cast, forged or rolled steels are used for bonnet raw material, depending on the valve body features: as a standard of construction, bonnet material is the same of body. For material choice refer to material selection guide. In standard design, bonnet has a bolted joint connection with body. Other design as pressure seal are available. 22 series bonnet can be properly extended type to ensure the best performances also in mildest applications. Standard plain bonnet. For applications where the temperature of the controlled fluid is between -30 C [2O F] and 600 C [644 F]. Although modern graphite packages are suitable for this high temperatures we reserve the possibility to suggest a proper extension on the basis of specific applications and materials used. Extended bonnet for high, low and CRYO temperatures up to -196 C [-321 F]. The bonnet is designed with a long necked section which distances the packing away from the process fluid. The necked section is designed with a minimum wall section to optimize heat transfer. STANDARD PLAIN BONNET Extended bonnet for bellow seal application. It s adopted in leakproof stem seal for cases where no gland leakage is admittable. The design consists of welded flexible steel bellows which are clamped in an extended bonnet. This effectively eliminates any possible leakage path around the plug stem thus preventing dangerous emissions from the valve packing. 13 2.3 TRIM COMPONENTS 22 series has unbalanced top guided design. The proper combination of plug, seat and eventually cage gives the characterization of valve behavior and makes possible to assure suited performances in a wide range of applications, also the mildest and severe ones. 22 series trim has been engineered to effectively face up and solve cavitation and noise matters, even in presence of dirty, corrosive, sticking or slightly abrasive fluids PLUG DESIGN Plug is always heavy top guided through a special metallic bushing fitted in the bonnet, that allows reducing mechanical vibrations thus enhancing trim reliability. Metallic bushing material is a high strength stainless steel with high corrosion resistance and antifriction capabilities. Plug materials of constructions depend on the combination of fluid type, pressure rating and design 100% temperature and shall be carefully selected together with the materials of the other trim components: refer to material section guide for stainless steel selections. Special treatments are available such as stellite overlay Both flow under the plug and flow over the plug head are possible. In 22 series plug has the following two main purposes. The definition of the flow characteristic curve. Plug is properly designed in order to allow the desired progression to flow area passage disclosure. This makes possible to enhance the 22-series versatility through a high rangeability (over 50:1 from 1 and over). 14 Anti-cavitation and noise abatement issues (CCTrim 22 and NCTrim 22) 22 series plug can also be engineered with a special skirt design that allow, through a proper combination of holes size and distribution, to efficiently face up both cavitation and noise problems. In this case plug realizes the first stage of pressure drop (CCTrim 22ss and NCTrim 22ss); a second stage can be realized through the cage where required (CCTrim 22ds and NCTrim 22ds). It is therefore possible to manufacture till a double multistage trim suitable to face fluid cavitation and noise abatement issues. In the following different plug type available are described CONTOURED PLUG Plug is properly contoured designed in order to create a very precise progression to flow area passage disclosure. This makes possible to regulate with great accuracy both high capacity applications and low flow conditions, with the best rangeability (over 50:1 from 1 and over). We are able to control the valve behavior with a suited characteristic curve (linear, mod linear, equal or customized solutions) for best performances with the simplest construction. CONTOURED PLUG (linear characteristic design) FLAT DISC DESIGN Plug ha a flat-disc design that makes possible to realize quick opening behavior. 15 HIGH-LOW FLOW SOLUTIONS Together with the standard design both high flow capacity (HCtrim 22) and low flow capacity solutions (LCTrim 22) are available. HCTrim 22: HICH CAPACITY TRIM LCTrim 22: LOW FLOW PLUG SOFT SEATED PLUG In order to make possible to reach the tight shut off performances, soft seat plug is an option available. This possibility is feasible only for contoured or flat plug. Soft seat make possible to reach up to VI leakage class depending on working conditions, that is fluid type and pressure/temperature combination. 16 NOISE REDUCTION: NOISE CONTROL TRIMS (NCTrims 22) As a regulating device, a control valve is a noise source. In fact pressure waves produced by flow turbulences are responsible of the aerodynamic noise, and it s impossible to control the flow of a fluid without introducing turbulences. Mechanical vibrations are too potential noise sources, but they can be avoided through the heavy top guide that characterizes the design of 22 Series. Aerodynamic noise is generally a problem to be faced with gases and vapors rather than liquids. Liquids noise matters depends on another more critical phenomenon: the cavitation. Besides noise power is related to the stream power of mass fluid, that depends on the square of fluid velocity. And gas/vapors velocities are much more higher than liquids the generated noise. The higher will be noise peak frequencies respect to piping ring frequencies (fr),the higher will be the noise attenuation obtainable by the pipe itself (fp>fr). Multipath approach is performed through a great number of small diameter holes to maximize the flow breaking into multiple jets. A drilled skirt designed plug make possible to obtain this. Drilled skirt is engineered in the most efficient way: holes diameters and disposition are optimized in order to respect flow jets independency, without each other interferences: our experience and our technical resources (R&D and CFD analysis) make possible to offer the best noise abatement solutions with the desired flow curve characteristic. A noise reduction till 15 db is possible with RMT Single Stage Noise Control Trim (NCTrim 22ss) Trims for liquids are therefore engineered to avoid primarily cavitation: this allow also a reduction of generated noise, which can be considered a secondary matter. Refer to CCTrim section for anticavitation trim description. 22 series cages has been engineered to offer two type of solutions to face up efficiently noise matters, on the basis of the physical greatness involved in generated noise. Single stage noise control trim (NCTrim 22ss): a multipath approach to noise problem. Double stage multi path noise control trim (NCTrim 22ds): a multistage and multipath approach to noise problem with the acting role of the cage that makes possible the second pressure drop stage SINGLE STAGE MULTI-PATH NOISE CONTROL PLUG (NCTrim 22ss) Noise attenuation is obtained by breaking the flow into a great number of multiple jets. This is a multipath approach to noise reduction. Physically a multipath trim make possible to decrease the geometrical factor (Fd) of the valve and this permit to shift to higher values the peak frequencies (fp) of SINGLE STAGE NOISE CONTROL Trim (NCTrim 22ss): DRILLED SKIRT PLUG 16

17 DOUBLE STAGE-MULTI PATH NOISE CONTROL TRIM (NCTrim 22ds) Noise reduction can be achieved also with a different technique: the multi-stage approach. If the whole pressure drop is divided into multiple stages of pressure reduction, it will be possible to change in favor of a noise reduction the acoustic efficiency of the valve. Small pressure drops p1/p2 make possible to control fluid expansions and velocities keeping always the last stage in sub-critical conditions, that is a good practice for the noise abatement. Multistage approach becomes very effective when it s coupled together with the multipath one. This is what happen in 22 Series double stage-multi path noise control trim, where a drilled skirt plug performs the first stage and the second one is performed by the cage. Great attentions is put into engineer every customized solution in order to maximize the number of independent path that is possible to realize thus keeping the geometrical factor Fd the higher possible for enhanced noise reduction. 18 CAVITATION CONTROL TRIM (CCTrim 22) Cavitation is a phenomenon that characterizes liquid flow behavior when pressure value becomes lower than the saturation Pv point. When cavitation occurs, the liquid begins to flash and steam bubbles are generated. This condition is obtained in the so called vena contracta, where the pressure reach the lowest value -and the velocity reach the peak values- before the recovery of pressure that occurs downstream. Pressure recover, quantified by the parameter FL in IEC standards, cause the bubble implosion when the valve outlet pressure becomes again higher than the vapor pressure. Bubbles collapse can seriously damage solid surfaces because of the high amount of energy released with this phenomenon. Cavitation highly affects both performances (vibrations, noise, etc.) and reliability: metal surfaces undergo a inevitable pitting damage if this process is not controlled. In order to face up this problem is necessary to break the pressure drop into a convenient amount of smaller pressure stages. This is shown in the following. 19 The adoption of a multiple stage design allow avoiding the cavitation beginning since the pressure is kept always, in control, higher than the flashpoint limit. Pressure drop controlled though multiple stages allow also governing also velocity fields in favor of fluid stability and noise emission. 20 2.3.2 SEAT AND RETAINER RING DESIGN In 22 series two seat design are available. Threaded seat. This configuration allows minimizing the number of trim components since cage is no more necessary for clamping the seat. For this reason threaded solution is not convenient when there is the need of a NCTrim 22ds or a CCTrim 22ds, that require a cage for the second stage. Quick-change configuration. In this configuration cage has the function to clamp and keep in position the seat. Additionally cage can perform the second stage in cavitation and noise control trims as described in relative section. Seat and cage materials of construction depend on the combination of fluid type, temperature and pressure and are carefully selected together with the materials of the other trim components. For material choice and special treatments (stellite overlay of the seat, cage hardening, etc ) refer to material selection guide. 21 2.4 PACKING 22 series have been developed with different suitable packing solutions that make possible to control fugitive emissions levels. Due to the modulating service of a control valve packing has been designed to allow adjustment over the service-life of the valve. Packing is designed to offer: limitation in the loss of process fluid, thus increasing efficiency; reduction in environment contamination; respect of the criteria of most restrictive legislations, avoiding connected sanctions Fire Safe design is allowable on request STANDARD LOW EMISSION PACKING Low Emission (LEM) packing meets the criteria of ISO : CC3 class. It is made by a series of pre-formed braided rings PTFE or GRAPHOIL based with two anti-extrusion terminal solid rings. PTFE based rings can be adopted from -30 C up to 200 C with a plain bonnet and from -30 C up to 300 C with an extended one; max allowable pressure is 250 Barg. GRAPHOIL based can be adopted from -30 C up to 600 C with a plain bonnet and from -100 C up to 600 C with an extended one; there are no practical limitation in max allowable pressure. Furtherly it s possible to introduce to standard design : leak-off in order to provide the possibility of measuring the emission level; packing follower with a dual O-ring design that allows very high performances with extremely volatile gas LIVE LOADING LOW EMISSION PACKING Live Loading Low Emission packing (LL-LEM) can maintain to optimal levels the leak performance practically during all life service of the valve. This is possible by the use of bellows springs that maintain a constant sealing force within the packing box. The results is constant low leakage performance with minimal field adjustment BELLOW SEAL PACKING Since 22 series are linear valves, they can be equipped with Bellows Seal (BS-LEM) for low emission behavior. The bellows seal concept isolate completely the stem from the exterior environment, metallic bellows are welded to the stem providing zero leak from the valve stem, in compliance with ISO class A.
