Technical description MSA steel flanged or butt-weld end swing check valves consist of a body, bonnet, disc and arm. Seat is welded into body. Disc fits on seat sealing surface. The disc is placed in an arm swinging on a pin in a special suspension. Connecting flanges are integral part of a body for flanged design, and are made according to ASME B Butt-weld ends are made according to ASME B Face to face dimensions and other dimensions comply with ASME B Installation Swing check valves can be installed eithter horizontally or vertically. If installed vertically, disc must be in upper position and flow direction must be upwards (under disc). 6

Technical description MSA globe valves design is in accordance with API 600. Stem has outside screw and it is either rising rotary or rising non-rotary. Standard stem screw is according to ASME B 1.5, ACME type. Stems and stuffing box are according to API 600. Stem nut can be seated in the following way: fixed seating or on antifriction bearings. Globe valves have cast plug. Connecting flanges are integral part of body for flanged design, are made according to ASME B Face to face dimensions and other dimensions comply with ASME B Installation Globe valve can be installed into pipeline in any position, however position with vertical stem axis is recommended (handwheel up). 10

Technical description MSA gate valve design meets requirements of API 600 a BS Gate valves are yoke type, with flanged or butt-weld ends, full bore and flexible wedge. Bodies, bonnets and yokes are cast. Wedges may be forged or cast. Seats are welded into valve body. Seat overlay is hard metal. Gate valves have rising non-rotary stem and bonnet-body bolted joint. Standard stem screw is according to ASME B 1.5, ACME type. All MSA gate valves are operated by handwheel as standard. If required they can be supplied with bevel gear box or electric actuator. Bigger sizes of gate valves are provided with bearings to enable easy operation. Packing materials die formed graphite rings from expanded graphite and braided graphite rings. MSA steel gate valve packings meet requirements of 1990 Clean Air Act Amendment regulation. 14

18 Design Details Stem nut bearing Per NPS size and pressure class the valves are supplied with stem nut sliding bearing (see Pict.1) or with antifriction bearing (see Pict. 2, 3). 4 5 Packing MSA supplies valves with non-flooded packing as a standard. Flooded packing design (see Pict. 4) must be specified in an order. Special equipment Based on customer's request gate valves can be equipped with drain, venting by-pass (see Pict. 5) relief valve from interspace. 6 7 Actuation Gate valves are supplied with handwheel as a standard. Based on customer's request they can be supplied with electric actuator or manual gearbox, with connection according to ISO 5210 Form A, Form B1 (see Pict. 6, 7). 18
19 Accessories Electric actuators Motorized controls may be applied to valves of almost any size for operation in practically any position or location. All units, whether installed directly on a valve, can be manually operated in case of power failure. Remote control Gear actuators Gearing is generally applied to valves to make operation easier. The gear may be of the spur, bevel, or worm type any of which may be applied to MSA valves. 19

24 6 Slab Gate Valves S Application Gate valves are intended for installation in sections of main pipelines for: oil and oil products working pressures up to 1450 psi (10 MPa) temperature of working media +5 F to +176 F (-15 C to +80 C) in climatic conditions from -76 F to +122 F (-60 C to +50 C). Installation Slab valve must be installed into pipeline in position with vertical stem axis. Technical description MSA complete gate valve consists of a separate gate valve and control unit. Body is welded of cast parts body, bottom and two necks, which are made of wrought material. Body is provided with guiding bars for guidance of a closing element. Closing element is a parallel slab with a port in its upper part. Gate valve is operated by electric actuator with a gear box. Electric actuator itself can be only separate or combined with auxiliary rotary pneumatic actuator. Gearbox used can be of bevel or spur type. By rotating of electric actuator handwheel to the right valve closes. Upon customer s request the valve can be equipped with different kind of actuator. 24

Design Details detail A: Packing consists of a set of rubber collars made of special rubber, with guide rings of bronze alloy, which are provided with sealing rubber "o" rings. These sets are double in each valve. Stuffing box is supplied not drilled as a standard. Based on customer's request stuffing box can be supplied drilled through, with plugs or sealing guns, or the stuffing box can be provided with complete equipment for leakage diagnostics and transfer of information by telemetric system. Other valve parts can be also equipped with this system. detail B: Seat is supplied with welded sealing surface with pressed-in non-metal sealing ring as a standard. Whole seat surface is provided with metal coating. Grade of seat base material, grade of welded sealing surface, sealing ring grade and metal coating grade depend on valve service conditions based on medium transported, working pressures, service and ambient temperatures etc. Seat shape also depends on the above mentioned parameters see Alternatives of Detail B. 26

28 8 Quality Systems Inspection of manufacturing process has critical influence on quality. Whole manufacturing process is thoroughly monitored and includes the following tests and inspections: receiving inspection of all raw materials and sub-supplies, in-process inspection during manufacture of individual parts, assembly tests, pressure tests, functional tests, non-destructive tests, final inspection of finished products. Pressure tests All pressure tests are performed in accordance with API 598, API 600, API 6D and DIN MSA also performs special tests according to API 6D a standard. Acceptance criteria is zero leakage. MSA also performs test by full operating pressure as a standard. This is the only test which can reveal possible leakage in the body-cover joint, stem, accessories, grease fittings etc. Ultrasonic test Cycle test X-Ray test Pressure test 28
29 Research and Development 9 MSA specialists deal with research and development activities and before creation of a new product they verify its properties, such as: fitness of materials used design strength and rigidity (FEM method) design functionality with stress on tightness and controllability hydraulic and aerodynamic properties etc. New product is tested both at MSA testing rooms, as well as in real service conditions. Product properties are regularly monitored during its whole service life and findings are applied for development and manufacture of new products. 29
30 10 Certificates Special tests MSA performs many special tests, by which we verify properties of our valves. All tests are witnessed by independent test institutes. The following tests were performed on MSA valves: Fire test according to API 6FD, API 607 and BS 6755, part 2, for Class 150, 300, 600, 900 and 1500 Tightness tests packing tightness test by methan Cycle test test for 3000 cycles (open-close) with water Hydrodynamics and aerodynamics test verification of hydropneumatic and aerodynamic properties Functional test All valves are functionally tested. Non-destructive tests MSA performs non-destructive tests in its own test rooms and equipment. Non-destructive tests include RT, MT, UT or DP tests. Personnel performing these test is highly qualified and certified according to EN 473 or SNT-TC-1A. Visual inspection Visual inspection is done on all castings used for MSA valves accordance with MSS SP-55 quality regulation for steel castings and corresponding specification in order. Certification MSA quality system is based on strict observance of EN ISO 9001:2000 and API Spec Q1 (Specification 6D number 0239). 30
