3 General Features of Electromagnetic Flowmeter Advantage No moving parts in the measuring pipe to facilitate maintenance and management, so transducer has long service life; no obstacle parts, so no pressure loss. Conductivity of measured liquid can reach at least 5 μ S/cm with various liner materials, which is applicable to measuring acid & alkali & salt solution, slurry, ore slurry, pulp, etc. High accuracy, generally ±0.5% and ±0.3%. Amend nonlinearity of meter factor to improve measuring accuracy. Select materials of liner and electrode correctly to realize good corrosion resistance and abrasive resistance. Wide measuring range, turndown ratio can reach 50:1. Furthermore, electromagnetic flowmeter is only proportional to average flow velocity of measured fluid and not related with flow state (laminar flow or turbulent flow) under the axisymmetric distribution. Bidirectional measurement system can measure forward flow and reverse flow. LCD backlight display, modify parameter online, simple and convenient operation. General Features of Electromagnetic Flowmeter Limitation Not applicable to measuring gas, steam and liquid containing a large amount of gas. Electromagnetic flowmeter cannot measure liquid medium with very low conductivity at present. The conductivity of measured liquid medium cannot be less than 5 μ S/cm which is equivalent to conductivity of distilled water. Electromagnetic flowmeter cannot be used to measure petroleum products or organic solvent. As insulating liner material of measuring tube is restricted by temperature, industrial electromagnetic flowmeter cannot measure high-temperature fluid at present. Do not measure liquid with temperature much lower than room temperature, because condensate outside of measuring tube can damage insulation. Electromagnetic flowmeter is affected by flow velocity distribution. Flow signal is proportional to average flow velocity under the axisymmetric distribution. So electromagnetic flowmeter must have straight length upstream and downstream. Electromagnetic flowmeter, based on Faraday law of electromagnetic induction, is easily affected by the outside electromagnetic disturbance. 1

4 KTLDE Intelligent Electromagnetic Flowmeter Main Features Electromagnetic flowmeter is to measure volumetric flowrate. Measuring flowrate is not affected by density, viscosity, temperature, pressure and conductivity of fluid. Induced voltage signal of transducer is linear with average flow velocity, measuring accuracy is high. Electromagnetic flowmeter has no mechanical inertia. Reaction is sensitive. Instantaneous pulse flow can be measured, and moreover, linearity is good. Therefore, measuring signal can be linearly converted to standard signal output directly by the converter. Since induced voltage signal forms in the whole space full of magnetic field and is average value in the cross-section of the pipe, transducer needs relatively short straight length, generally 5D upstream and 3D downstream. Only the liner and electrode touch the measured liquid, so as long as electrode and liner material are selected properly, corrosion resistance and abrasive resistance can be realized to ensure long-term use. Advanced MCU and SMT used in converter to make it has reliable performance, high accuracy, low power consumption, stable zero point, easy parameter setting, dot-matrix LCD display for total flow, velocity, flowrate percentage, etc. Large diameter adopts six electrodes structure, accuracy is high. Above DN450 adopts two pairs of measuring electrodes and a pair of grounding electrodes, so grounding ring is not required at any time. In June 2007, State Intellectual Property Office of the People's Republic of China awarded patent certificate of six electrodes electromagnetic flowmeter to Shanghai Kent according to national patent law. Take the lead in adopting grounding electrode structure to form the balanced electrode surface, which could ensure the entire measurement goes on within the balanced electrode surface, eliminate disturbance of electrical noise and provide accurate measuring result. Besides, the biggest advantage of grounding electrode is that grounding can be reliably guaranteed for a long time to ensure measuring accuracy, because general pipe aging and rusting cannot guarantee transducer grounding. Excitation with low frequency rectangular wave, improves measuring stability and reduces power consumption and shows superior characteristics of low flow velocity. Bidirectional measurement system can measure forward flow and reverse flow. Shanghai Kent adopts special manufacturing technique and quality materials to ensure stable performance for a long time. Products are widely applied in water industry (tap water, industrial water and sewage disposal), metallurgy, chemical industry, textile, papermaking, electric power, pharmacy, food industry, etc. 2

6 KTLDE Intelligent Electromagnetic Flowmeter Precaution of Selection Flow velocity range during measurement When measuring clean medium, economical flow velocity is 1.5~3m/s. When measuring crystalloid solution, should increase flow velocity properly to 3~4m/s, which can self-clean, avoid adhesion and deposition, etc. When measuring abrasive fluid such as ore pulp, should reduce flow velocity properly to 1.0~2m/s in order to reduce abrasion on the liner and electrode. Over 7m/s is very few in practical application, and more than 10m/s is even rare. Application in the medium that conductivity is below 5 μ S/cm should be limited. High temperature type When fluid temperature is 60~180, must select the liner of high temperature type. Rubber liner cannot be used in the fluid which temperature is higher than 60. Converter type For measuring flowrate of large diameter, generally diameter 500mm, the remote type is advised for convenient maintenance. Distance for remote type The following graph is the relations among the largest distance for remote type, copper core cross-section of cable and medium conductivity: 4

7 KTLDE Intelligent Electromagnetic Flowmeter Precaution of Selection In practice, the distance for remote type is as shorter as possible, because long cable affected by distributed capacitance is easy to cause signal disturbance. For example: conductivity of tap water is about 100 μ S/cm, the largest distance for remote type is about 100m (conductivity of acid & alkali &salt solution is comparatively large, so the distance for remote type could surpass 100m, specific numerical value is according to conductivity and copper core cross-section of cable). 8 KTLDE Intelligent Electromagnetic Flowmeter Selection Methods Nominal diameter selection of electromagnetic flow transducer 1. Firstly, should make sure the following process parameters: 1) Component, density and conductivity of measured fluid 2) Maximum flowrate, normal flowrate and minimum flowrate 3) The highest working pressure 4) The highest and lowest temperature 2. The volumetric flowrate of electromagnetic flowmeter is proportional to flow velocity of fluid, so through known flowrate and limited velocity range, nominal diameter of electromagnetic flowmeter will be known. 3 Thereinto: q v - volumetric flowrate of measured fluid (unit: m /h) D - diameter of flow transducer (unit: mm) V - flow velocity of measured fluid (unit: m/s) 3. Also select diameter according to the table of flowrate range. Maximum and minimum flowrate must conform to the following table: Select electromagnetic flowmeter according to the table above. If meter size does not conform to process pipe, converging pipe or diverging pipe should be used. If converging pipe and considering pressure loss due to converging pipe, calculate according to Appendix 5. In terms of product price and accuracy, electromagnetic flowmeter with proper flow velocity and diameter could be chosen. Meanwhile, investment is relatively reduced. 6

The graph of relations among inside diameter, flow velocity and flowrate as below: Selection of electrode material Selection of electrode material should be according to the corrosion of measured fluid. Please refer to the handbook of the corrosion and test for corrosion for special fluid. 7

10 KTLDE Intelligent Electromagnetic Flowmeter Selection Methods Selection of liner material Select liner material according to corrosion, abrasion and temperature of measured medium. Selection of rated pressure The highest practical working pressure must be less than rated working pressure of flowmeter. Selection of working temperature The highest and lowest working temperature must conform to the temperature requirement of flowmeter. Selection of grounding ring As taking the lead in adopting grounding electrode structure, grounding and measuring accuracy can be guaranteed for a long time, so grounding ring is no longer required. If stray current is too large, e.g. leakage current along electrolyte in electrolytic tank affects normal measurement of electromagnetic flowmeter, recommend to select the electromagnetic flowmeter with grounding ring. Selection of protection grade IP 67: prevent submerging in water at a short time. Submerging in 1m of water, after 30min, it is not harmful. IP 68: the type of submerging in water continuously, long-term work in the water. Select protection grade according to actual application condition, IP68 for the transducer installed under the ground submerging in water for long term, IP 67 for the transducer installed on or above the ground. Selection of extra function KTLDE electromagnetic flowmeter has functions of display 4-20mA output, 0-1kHz and alarm signal. Other extra-function can be selected according to actual application condition. Remote type: it is suitable to install the sensor under the ground or other reason. RS-485 Communication: communication function should be selected once communication between meter and other equipments needed. 8

11 KTLDE Intelligent Electromagnetic Flowmeter Selection Procedure The first step: find out measured fluid and relevant process parameter in detail The following parameter must be known in detail: 1 Fluid name, ingredients, state, density and conductivity Confirm whether electromagnetic flowmeter can be used or not 2 Fluid temperature, pressure Confirm whether within the range of temperature and pressure or not 3 Fluid measuring range Confirm whether upper & lower limit flowrate is within measuring range 4 Corrosivity Confirm material of electrode and liner 5 Installing environment Confirm explosion proof and protection grade 6 Output signal, communication Confirm communication protocol 7 Working power supply Confirm the type of power supply The second step: DN selection of electromagnetic flow transducer Maximum and minimum flowrate must conform to the table of flowrate range (refer to Page 11). The third step: confirm meter type according to the selection table According to the procedure above, take an example as follows: A factory measuring 98% of concentrated sulfuric acid, nominal diameter is DN32, maximum flowrate is m /h, normal flowrate is 3m /h, minimum flowrate is 1m /h, operating temperature is 40, operating pressure is 0.2MPa, output signal is 4~20Ma, power supply is 220VAC. Select proper meter model according to the parameters above: 1) According to the name, ingredient, state of fluid, electromagnetic flowmeter can be used. Besides, electrode type is standard fixed type and its code is 1 in the selection table. 2) As strong corrosiveness of 98% of concentrated sulfuric acid and other chemical property, Ta electrode could be selected, choosing code 3 in the selection table (for 100% and 103% of oleum, Pt electrode is used). According to fluid temperature and property of 98% strong sulfuric acid, PTFE could be selected as liner material, choosing code 5 in the selection table. 3) According to operating pressure of fluid, the highest working pressure of flange without impact and pressure grade of standard DN (standard pressure grade of DN10~DN80 is GB4.0MPa), GB4.0MPa is confirmed as pressure grade, choosing code G5 in the selection table. 4) According to operating temperature of fluid, working temperature is less than 60, choosing code E in the selection table. 5) Grounding ring is no longer required according to the description of selection methods and electrode structure, choosing code 0 in the selection table. 6) According to actual working condition, transducer is not installed under the ground and submerging in water for a long time, so protection grade IP67 is proper, choosing code 0 in the selection table. Meanwhile, combined DN and customers request (if no special requirement, selection according to working condition and nominal diameter), converter of compact type is proper, selecting code 0 in the 9

12 KTLDE Intelligent Electromagnetic Flowmeter Selection Procedure selection table. 7) Select 4~20mA of output signal (code 0 in the selection table) as per customers requirements. 8) According to working condition, requirement of customer (if no special request, select mainly according to the standard material and working condition) and standard material, we could choose carbon steel as housing material and material of body flange, which codes are 0 in the selection table. 9) Generally, if companion flange is not required by customers, we do not select companion flange, so choosing code 0 in the selection table. 10) As power supply is 220VAC, choosing code 0 in the selection table. 11) According to working condition and requirement of customer (if no special request, we judge as per working condition), explosion proof is not required for this medium. If no explosion proof required, selection code can be omitted. 12) Thus confirm the model of electromagnetic flowmeter: KTLDE G5E

15 KTLDE Sanitary Electromagnetic Flowmeter Application and Selection In sanitary industries, such as food, pharmaceutical etc., require timely high temperature steam to sterilize and clean in processes, the remaining medium be not allowed to stay on the place where pipe connection to prevent the bacilli propagate, therefore a quick install meter with hoop produced in sanitary industries, shown as below: Parts: 1. 16 Precaution of Handling & Transportation In order not to be damaged, do not open the package before meter received by customer. Handle with care during the transportation, do not crash, drench, impact and vibrate. Please pay special attention to avoiding scratching the liner during the transportation. Precaution of Storage Flowmeter should be installed in time once it arrives at the using place to avoid reducing insulativity of amplifier and metal parts being corroded etc. Pay special attention to the following things: (1) Try not to open the package to store in any condition; (2) Storage place should be: a. Damp proof and rain-proof b. Little mechanical vibration c. Temperature between -35~60, ideal temperature is about 25 d. Relative humidity between 5~90%, ideal relative humidity is 65% (3) Should clean meter body totally before store used electromagnetic flowmeter. (4) The flowmeter performance will be affected if outdoor storage for a long time. Therefore, please install it immediately once it is carried to the installing site. 14

17 Precaution of Installation & Application (1) The transducer can be installed horizontally, perpendicularly or slantwise. In order to ensure the measuring pipe is full of the measured medium, perpendicular installation would be better, flow direction is from bottom to top. Especially for liquid-solid two-phase flow, perpendicular installation is a must. If only horizontal installation is allowed, should guarantee two electrodes in the same level, axis of electrode must approach to the level, because bottom electrode is easily covered by the deposit and top electrode is easily grazed by the bubble in liquid, then cover electrode surface to make the output signal fluctuate. (2) Straight length should be at least 5D upstream and 3D downstream. In order to convenient installation and disassembly, expansion joint of pipe can be installed behind the flowmeter. (3) Flow direction of fluid should conform to the arrow on the flowmeter. (4) Please pay special attention that negative pressure in the pipe could damage the liner of flowmeter. The pipe of positive pressure should prevent negative pressure, e.g. for the pipe which liquid temperature is higher than that of room temperature, after close the shut-off valve upstream and downstream, cooling shrinkage of fluid could form the negative pressure. So the valve avoiding negative pressure should be installed around the transducer. (5) The flowmeter should be away from pump, valve, etc. to avoid interfering measurement. (6) The flowmeter should be away from the interfering source, such as radio frequency, strong magnetic field, strong vibration, etc. 15

18 Precaution of Installation & Application (7) If vibration occurs in the measuring pipe, the brackets should be fixed on both sides of flowmeter. (8) When measuring mix-phase fluid, choose the place where phase separation doesn t happen; when measuring bi-component liquid, avoid installing at the downstream where liquid mixes unevenly; when measuring the pipe of chemical reaction, should install at the downstream where chemical reaction has finished fully. Meanwhile, the distance between mixing point and flowmeter is at least 30D when measuring mix-phase fluid. (9) To facilitate the future cleaning and maintenance of flowmeter, bypass pipe should be installed, and guarantee straight length with 5D upstream and 3D downstream. (10) When installing electromagnetic flowmeter, the bolt connecting two flanges should be screwed up evenly by torque wrench, otherwise it is easy to crush the liner. (11) Transducer must ground separately. General grounding resistor is under 100 Ω. For installation request of explosion proof and thunder proof, grounding resistor should be less than 10 Ω. In principle, the grounding of remote flowmeter should be on the transducer and converter at the same grounding point. (12) The converter of remote electromagnetic flowmeter is generally installed around transducer or in meter & electricity room. Please notice that when connecting transducer and converter, in order to avoid interfering signal, signal cable must be placed independently in the metal tube of grounding protection, signal cable and power supply cable can not be placed in the same metal tube. 16

19 Installation Requirement of Straight Length Flowmeter has a requirement of straight length upstream and downstream at installation point, or it will affect measuring accuracy. Please refer to the following charts in detail: Generally, straight length at least 5D upstream and 3D downstream Straight length is not required behind the converging pipe After fully open the gate valve, straight length at least 5D upstream and 3D downstream Straight length at least 5D upstream and 3D downstream behind the 90 elbow Straight length at least 10D upstream and 3D downstream behind the valve of different jaw opening Straight length at least 5D upstream and 3D downstream behind the diverging pipe 17

21 KTLDE Intelligent Electromagnetic Flowmeter Installation Type For flowmeter installed horizontally, gas mixing with liquid may separate and gather on the top of pipe. If there is elbow downstream, gas will gather from low place to high place. So flowmeter should be installed at the low place. If liquid contains solid which is easy to precipitate, such as silt, small stone particle and etc, flowmeter should be installed vertically and flow direction should be down to up to reach mixture of liquid and solid. Improper operation results in negative pressure caused by high temperature fluid. When close upstream and downstream valve at the same time, when fluid temperature is relatively high and then shrinks after rapid cooling, there is a danger to form negative pressure which will cause the separation of metal tube and liner and electrode leakage. So the valve avoiding negative pressure should be installed near the flowmeter, if necessary, open the valve to connect atmospheric pressure to avoid negative pressure. Behind the valve is negative pressure area in the pipe where collective gas may enter to affect measurement. Therefore, the valve should be installed in the flowmeter downstream. 19

22 KTLDE Intelligent Electromagnetic Flowmeter Installation Type Grounding Transducer must be separate grounding (general grounding resistor<100 Ω ; for explosion proof products and lightningproof installation, grounding resistor<10 Ω ). In principle, remote type grounding should be on the side of transducer, converter grounding should be on the same point. If transducer installed in the pipe which has cathodic corrosion protection, apart from grounding together of transducer and grounding ring, the thick copper wire (16mm 2 ) should be used around the transducer to connect two connection flanges on the pipe, which isolates transducer from current of cathodic protection. Sometimes stray current is heavy, e.g., leakage current along electrolyte in electrolytic tank affects normal measurement of electromagnetic flowmeter, so electrical isolation could be used between flow transducer and process pipe. Likewise, when the current of cathodic protection affects measurement, also could adopt the same way. 30 Outline Dimension & Installation Fixed Insertion Type Fixed insertion flowmeter consists of transducer (electrode assembly), inserted rod, inserted mechanism (duct, flange etc) and converter (compact and remote). Note: Above information is just for reference. 28

31 Outline Dimension & Installation Fixed Insertion Type Installation Procedures: 1. Drill a hole: drill a hole above the customer s pipe (only for horizontal pipe) by the torch cutting with diameter referring to connecting short duct, no burrs around the hole to facilitate screwing the short duct. 2. Weld the connection short duct: weld the connecting short duct (supplied as standard) to ensure that the axis of duct must be vertical to the axis of customer s pipe. 3. Insert the meter: insert the inserted type of electromagnetic flowmeter (nuts has screwed) into the pipe. 4. Screw the down nut: wind the sealing strip on the external thread of down nut, then screw the down nut by spanner. 5. Adjust direction: adjust the direction rod on the Flange to conform to flow direction and parallel pipe, then screw the middle and upper nut. 29

Weld the connection short duct: weld the connecting short duct (supplied as standard) to ensure that the axis of duct must be vertical to the axis of customer s pipe. 3. Install the ball valve: wind the sealing strip on the external thread of duct, then screw the ball valve by spanner. 4. Insert the meter: open the ball valve, calculate the inserted depth R, then insert the meter (nuts has screwed) through the valve into the pipe. 5. Screw the down nut: wind the sealing strip on the external thread of down nut, then screw the down nut by spanner. 6. 36 KTLDE Intelligent Electromagnetic Flowmeter Electrode Structure Multi electrodes structure With the development of the theory of electromagnetic flowmeter, a new concept about balanced electrode plane has been raised, i.e. add two grounding electrodes in plane of signal electrodes, shown as below: There are several advantages using this method in design, first no need of grounding ring, second the measuring average velocity is limited in the balanced electrodes plane; third, electricity noise interference is eliminated, so the meter is more accurate and reliable. Electrode Configuration of KTLDE: Meter Size DN15 ~ DN450 > DN450 Electrode Configuration 2 measuring electrodes 2 grounding electrodes 4 measuring electrodes 2 grounding electrodes Blade electrode Because the surface of the electrode will be covered easily by the dirtiness to cause output signal drift and swing or even failure the meter measurement when it used in dirty fluid such as slurry and sewage. Use the mechanical blade made by a sliming steel shaft, and adopting mechanical seal between hollow electrodes to prevent the fluid measured from being leakage, then clean the dirty electrode, see figure below. 37 Appendix 1 Measuring Principle KTLDE intelligent electromagnetic flowmeter is applicable to measuring volumetric flowrate of conductive liquid and slurry in closed pipe, its principle is based on Faraday law of electromagnetic induction. Thereinto: Ei- induced electromotive force Φ - magnetic flux Forward direction of magnetic flux and induced electromotive force conform to Fleming's right hand rule. In the practical experiment, magnetic flux surrounded by the conductor loop changes, there are usually two forms: first, conductor in the magnetic field is to cut magnetic line; the other is that conductor in the magnetic field is not to cut magnetic line, but magnetic flux surrounded by the conductor loop is interchangeable. Our products adopt conductor to cut magnetic line in the magnetic field. As is shown in the figure, both ends of conductor have induced electromotive force when conductor is cutting magnetic line. Magnetic flux of unit area is called magnetic induction intensity. Formula (1-2) shows that induced electromotive force at two ends of conductor is proportional to magnetic induction intensity (B) and length of conductor (D) and velocity (V) when conductor is cutting magnetic line in the magnetic field. For the round measuring pipe, volumetric flowrate is: Incorporate formula (1-3) into formula (1-2): Formula (1-4) shows that induced electromotive force is inversely proportional to the inside diameter of measuring pipe (D), is proportional to magnetic induction intensity (B).
