The replacemet of ay part o this product by other tha the maufacturer's authorized replacemet part may adversely affect the performace, durability or safety of this product. USE OF OTHER THAN ORIGINAL SCAG REPLACEMENT PARTS WILL VOID THE WARRANTY. If additioal iformatio or service is eeded that is ot outlied i this maual, please cotact your Scag Power Equipmet dealer. As with ay power equipmet, carelessess or error ca result i serious bodily ijury. Improper maiteace ca also result i ijury. To reduce the potetial for ijury, follow these istructios o safe operatio. How To Use This Edger 1. Be thoroughly familiar with the cotrols ad the proper use of the machie. 2. Kow how to stop the edger ad disegage the cotrols quickly. 3. Use the edger oly o flower beds ad laws. 4. Always stay behid the hadles. Stoes ad other items throw by the blade ca cause serious ijury (See Figure 1, page 2). 5. Do ot modify or alter ay compoet of the edger. Dress Properly CAUTION: 1. Wear safety glasses or goggles. 2. Do ot wear loose clothig or jewelry; they ca be caught i movig parts. Always wear log pats that cover your legs. 1

Never operate the edger uless guards ad other protective devices are i place. 2. Before you use the edger, make sure all uts, bolts, ad screws are istalled ad properly tighteed. 3. Where applicable, check pulley setscrews ad all fasteers for tightess ad lubricate periodically as described i the maiteace sectio o pages 6 ad 7. Stay Alert 1. Watch what you are doig. Use commo sese. 2. Do ot operate the edger whe you are fatigued or uder the ifluece of alcohol or drugs. Operate With Care 1. Keep hads, feet, ad clothig well away from the blade ad movig parts. 2. Do't overreach or stad o ustable groud. Keep good footig ad balace at all times. 3. Start the egie carefully. Stop the egie whe leavig the edger uatteded. 4. Do ot operate the edger with a damaged or excessively wor blade. 5. Never attempt to make adjustmets whe the edger is ruig. 6. Never direct discharge of material toward people. Use care i directig discharge to avoid glass eclosures or automobiles. 7. Never operate the edger without good visibility or light of day. 8. Stay alert for ueve sidewalks, holes i the terrai, or other similar coditios whe usig the edger. Always push slowly over rough groud. 9. Always keep the throttle i the STOP positio whe the edger is ot i use. Projectile Path 10. If the edger strikes a foreig object: (1) stop the egie. (2) discoect the spark plug lead. 6 SAFETY AND OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS (CONT'D) Keep Hads Ad Feet From Blade 3. After operatig the edger, stop the egie ad allow the egie to cool before refuelig. 4. To reduce the risk of fire, replace the gasolie cap securely after addig fuel to the tak. 5. Use a approved gasolie cotaier. The rotatig blade is sharp ad ca severely cut body parts. The blade coasts after the edger is tured off (See Figure 2). 6. Do ot store gasolie i a house. 7. If gasolie is spilled o the groud, move the edger ad the gasolie cotaier from the area ad do ot create a source of igitio. 8. If gasolie is spilled o clothig, remove the staied clothes ad replace them with clea, dry clothes before operatig the edger. Follow Maiteace Istructios Carefully Figure 2, Protect Hads Ad Feet 1. Keep both hads o the hadles whe the blade is rotatig. 2. Keep your feet ad hads away from the cuttig area. PROPERLYPROPERLY 3. Do ot attempt to remove cut material or holdserviceservice material to be cut whe the egie is ruig or ENGINEENGINE the blade is movig. WITHWITHWITHWITHWITH OILOIL 4. Make sure the spark plug wire is discoected whe clearig jammed material from the blade ANDANDANDANDAND or cutter head. FUEL. 5. Disegage the blade ad stop the egie whe the edger is trasported or ot i use. Hadle Gasolie With Care 1. Gasolie is highly flammable. Never add gasolie to a ruig or hot egie. 1. Discoect the spark plug lead before servicig ay part of the edger. 2. To reduce the risk of fire, do ot allow excessive grass, leaves, lubricats or gasolie to accumulate o the edger. 3. Do ot attempt to make repairs other tha those idetified i this maual. Repairs ot detailed i this maual should be performed by a authorized Scag dealer. See that oly idetical replacemet parts are used. 4. Whe cleaig, repairig, or ispectig the edger, make certai the blade ad all movig parts have stopped. Discoect the spark plug wire. 5. Whe liftig or trasportig the edger, firmly grasp a solid part of the frame. Do ot lift the edger by the clutch or height adjustmet assemblies. Blade is sharp! Be careful of the blade whe liftig. 6. Do ot ru the edger idoors; exhaust fumes are dagerous. 2. Refuel outdoors i a ope area oly. Never fill the gasolie tak idoors. 3

Keep a safe distace betwee two or more operators whe workig with a cuttig crew at the same site. SETUP & OPERATION Assembly 1. Istall the upper hadle assembly with hardware as show i Figure 3 usig (4) 5/16-18 x 1" bolts, ad (4) 5/16-18 elastic stop uts. Figure 3, Hadle Setup 2. Attach the height adjustmet idex to the upper hadle assembly usig (2) 5/16-18 x 1-1/2" hex head bolts, (2) 5/16 flat washers ad (2) 5/16-18 elastic stop uts. 3. Istall the tube-type cotrol rod o right had side betwee the frot wheel height lever ad the idex quadrat usig (4) hair pi cotters to secure the cotrol rod. 4. Istall the operator presece safety cotrol rod with the log rod at the top ad the short rod at the idler pulley arm usig (4) hair pi cotters. Adjust the legth of the rod for ormal belt tesio (See Figure 4). 5. Fill the egie with oil as described i the egie operator's maual. Lubricate all grease fittigs with lithium-based grease. 6. Fill the egie fuel tak with fresh uleaded gasolie that has a miimum octae ratig of 87. Figure 4, Operator Presece Cotrols 4

8 SETUP & OPPERATION (CONT'D) Startig The Egie Operatig Istructios Figure 5 is a geeral view of the edger. Note: The right or left side of the edger refers to the view from the ormal operatig positio, behid the hadles. Before Operatio 1. Check the egie oil level as detailed i the egie operator's maual. 2. Before startig the egie, be sure the blade has a free arc of travel ad the blade is fully raised. Damage to the blade ca result if the blade is ot i the highest positio (See Figures 5 ad 6). Be sure o oe is stadig ear the blade. Keep body parts away from the blade. Before startig, clear operatig area of foreig objects, sticks, stoes, etc. Refer to the egie operator's maual for startig istructios. Operatio CAUTION: 1. Move the edger to the workig area. 2. Pull the operator presece safety levers up to egage the blade (See Figure 7) ad carefully raise the frot wheel util the blade is at the desired cuttig depth. Whe the height adjustmet lever is all the way forward, the blade is 1/2 ich from the groud. The blade is lowered approximately 1/4 ich for each otch i the height adjustmet idex. 9 SETUP & OPPERATION (CONT'D) 3. Push the edger forward slowly, adjust your pace to the egie's capacity. 4. Remove the oil drai plug ad drai the oil ito a appropriate cotaier. 5. After the oil is draied, replace the drai plug ad refill the crakcase to the level specified i the egie ower's maual. 6. Replace the oil cap. 7. Dispose of the used oil properly. Chagig The Belt 1. Remove the flat bar belt guide at the frot of the spidle boom assembly (See Figure 8). 2. Remove the old belt. 3. Istall the ew belt. Do ot attempt to pry or force the belt ito the pulley grooves as this may damage the belt. Figure 7, Egagig The Blade 4. Replace the frot belt guide. MAINTENANCE CAUTION: To prevet ijury from rotatig parts tur the egie stop switch to OFF ad discoect the spark plug wire from the egie before attemptig ay maiteace. Chagig Egie Oil Oil should be chaged after the first 20 hours of use ad the after every 50 hours of use. 1. Start the egie ad allow it to warm up. 2. Tur the egie switch to OFF. Make sure the blade has stopped turig. Discoect the spark plug wire. 3. Carefully clea all debris from aroud the oil filler cap. Remove the cap. 6 Figure 8, Belt Replacemet

10 MAINTENANCE (CONT'D) Belt Tesio Always adjust the belt tesio after chagig the belt. New belts may stretch. Excess tesio o the belt will make holdig the clutch difficult ad cause the belts to wear. To adjust belt tesio (See Figure 9): 1. Remove the cotter pi from the lower cotrol rod ad discoect the lower cotrol rod from the idler pulley assembly. 2. To icrease the belt tesio, loose the hex ut ad tur the lower cotrol rod to shorte the rod. Retighte the ut after the rod is reistalled. Chagig the Blade The blade is sharp! Wear gloves whe chagig the blade. Do ot operate the edger with a damaged or excessively wor blade. Note: Blades must be balaced before istallatio to prevet vibratio ad wear to the edger. 1. While holdig the hex bolt head by the spidle pulley, remove the ut ad washer ad carefully remove the blade from the assembly (See Figure 10). 2. Istall the ew blade. CAUTION: 3. Replace the ut ad washer. 4. Tighte the ut securely. Keep the spidle shaft from rotatig with a wrech o the hex ut located o the pulley. Figure 10, Blade Replacemet Figure 9, Belt Tesio 7

11 MAINTENANCE (CONT'D) Rubber Debris Deflector Replace the rubber deflector whe wor or damaged to prevet operator ijury. Lubricatio Grease the edger periodically at the poits show o Figure 11. Use lithium-based grease. Note: The spidle bearigs are sealed ad permaetly lubricated. They should require o maiteace. Figure 11, Lubricatio 8

15 LIMITED WARRANTY- COMMERCIAL ACCESSOR CCESSORY Ay part of the Scag commercial accessory maufactured by Scag ad foud, i the reasoable judgmet of Scag, to be defective i material or workmaship, will be repaired or replaced by a Authorized Scag Service Dealer without charge for parts ad labor. The Scag accessory, icludig ay defective part, must be retured to a Authorized Scag Service Dealer withi the warraty period. The expese of deliverig the accessory to the dealer for warraty work ad the expese of returig it back to the ower after repair or replacemet will be paid for by the ower. Scag s resposibility i respect to claims is limited to makig the required repairs or replacemets, ad o claim of breach of warraty shall be cause for cacellatio or rescissio of the cotract of sale of ay Scag machie. Proof of purchase will be required by the dealer to substatiate ay warraty claim. All warraty work must be performed by a Authorized Scag Service Dealer. This warraty is limited to 90 days from the date of origial retail purchase for ay Scag accessory that is used for commercial purposes, or ay other icome-producig purpose icludig retal use. This warraty does ot cover ay accessory that has bee subject to misuse, eglect, egligece, or accidet, or that has bee operated i ay way cotrary to the operatig istructios as specified i the Operator's Maual. The warraty does ot apply to ay damage to the accessory that is the result of improper maiteace, or to ay accessory or parts that have ot bee assembled or istalled as specified i the Operator's Maual. The warraty does ot cover ay accessory that has bee altered or modified. I additio, the warraty does ot exted to repairs made ecessary by ormal wear, or by the use of parts or accessories which, i the reasoable judgmet of Scag, are either icompatible with the Scag mower or adversely affect its operatio, performace or durability. This warraty does ot cover egies ad electric starters, which are warrated separately by their maufacturer. Scag Power Equipmet reserves the right to chage or improve the desig of ay accessory without assumig ay obligatio to modify ay accessory previously maufactured. All other implied warraties are limited i duratio to the 90 day warraty period. Accordigly, ay such implied warraties icludig merchatability, fitess for a particular purpose, or otherwise, are disclaimed i their etirety after the expiratio of the appropriate iety day warraty period.
