15 III. EMI/RFI EMI/RFI WARNINGS Laboratory tests performed by the Food ad Drug Admiistratio (FDA) have show that radio waves ca cause uiteded motio of electric mobility vehicles. Radio waves are a form of electromagetic eergy (EM). Whe electromagetic eergy adversely affects the operatio of a electrical device, that adverse effect is called Electromagetic Iterferece (EMI) or Radio Frequecy Iterferece (RFI). EMI/RFI FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS) The followig FAQs summarize what you should kow about EMI/RFI. Use this iformatio to miimize the risk that EMI/RFI will adversely affect your mobility vehicle. Where do radio waves come from? Radio waves are emitted from the ateas of cellular phoes, mobile two-way radios (such as walkie-talkies ad CBs), radio statios, TV statios, amateur radio (HAM) trasmitters, wireless computer liks, microwave sources, ad pagig trasmitters. Radio waves are a form of electromagetic eergy (EM). EM is more itese closer to trasmittig ateas, which are sources of emissio. The greater the trasmissio stregth, the greater the cocer to electric mobility vehicle users. If EMI/RFI affects my mobility vehicle, what kid of motio should I expect? This is difficult to predict. The aswer would deped o a umber of factors: The stregth of the radio waves. The costructio of your particular mobility vehicle. The locatio of your mobility vehicle (whether it is o the level groud or o a iclie). Whether or ot your mobility vehicle is i motio. The motio of ay electric mobility vehicle affected by EMI/RFI ca be erratic. The mobility vehicle may come to a sudde stop or move i a ucotrolled maer. Also, it is possible for EMI/RFI to release the brakes of a electric mobility vehicle. Some itese EMI/RFI ca eve damage the cotrol system compoets of a electric mobility vehicle. Is there ay way to kow for certai whether or ot radio waves are the cause of ay uiteded mobility vehicle motio? Ufortuately, EMI/RFI may be difficult to recogize, because the sigals from radio sources are ivisible ad may be itermittet. However, the FDA recommeds that you report all icidets of uiteded motio or uiteded brake release of your mobility vehicle to its maufacturer ad, if possible, determie whether or ot there was a radio wave source earby at the time of the icidet. Oe precautio you ca take agaist uiteded motio of your mobility vehicle is to make certai that you or someoe else is ot the cause of the uiteded motio. Tur off your mobility vehicle by removig the key from the key switch whe you are gettig oto or off of your mobility vehicle. Never leave the key i the key switch of a uatteded mobility vehicle. By followig these steps, you greatly reduce the risk of you or ayoe else iadvertetly bumpig the throttle cotrol levers ad causig the mobility vehicle to move uitetioally. Has ayoe bee ijured by the erratic, uiteded motio of a electric mobility vehicle? The FDA has reports of ijuries that resulted from ucotrolled motio of electric mobility vehicles, but it is ot clear just how may of those ijuries were actually caused by EMI/RFI. Victory XL/RevD/Jue

16 III. EMI/RFI Are all electric mobility vehicles susceptible to EMI/RFI? Each make ad model of electric mobility vehicle differs i its ability to resist EMI/RFI. Every mobility vehicle has a particular level of resistace to EMI/RFI. This resistace is measured i volts per meter (V/m). A higher resistace level offers greater protectio agaist EMI/RFI. I other words, a electric mobility vehicle with a high resistace level is less likely to be affected by a strog radio source tha is a electric mobility vehicle with a low resistace level. What is the FDA doig about the problem? The FDA has writte to electric mobility vehicle maufacturers ad requested that those maufacturers test their ew mobility vehicle models to be certai that they provide a reasoable degree of resistace agaist EMI/RFI. The FDA has stated that all ewly maufactured electric mobility vehicle models should have a resistace level of at least 20 V/m. This level of resistace provides a reasoable degree of protectio agaist the commo sources of EMI/RFI. The FDA has also requested or recommeded that: Electric mobility vehicle maufacturers clearly label ew products with their resistace level or state that the resistace level is ot kow. The labelig or iformatioal material supplied with ew electric mobility vehicles must explai what the resistace level meas ad war users about the possibility of EMI/RFI ad how to avoid it. Electric mobility vehicle maufacturers udertake a educatioal program to iform electric mobility vehicle users ad their caregivers about the problems associated with EMI/RFI ad about the actios they ca take to miimize the risk of EMI/RFI. While there is o exact way to tell if your mobility vehicle is totally safe, a immuity level of 20 V/m is geerally achievable ad useful. This product has bee tested ad passed at a immuity level of 20 V/m. What ca I do to fid out if my mobility vehicle is likely to be affected by EMI/RFI? If you have had your mobility vehicle for some time ad have ot experieced ay uiteded motio, it is ot likely that you will have a problem i the future. However, it is always possible that EMI/RFI problems could arise if you are close to a source of radio waves. Therefore, it is very importat for you to be alert to this possibility. The mobility vehicle meets or exceeds a resistace level of at least 20 V/m. What ca I do to reduce the risk of my mobility vehicle beig affected by EMI/RFI? Here are some precautios you ca take: Do ot tur o or use had-held persoal commuicatios devices, such as citizes bad (CB) radios ad cellular phoes, while your mobility vehicle is tured o. Be aware of earby radio wave trasmitters, such as radio or TV statios ad had-held or mobile two-way radios. Try ot to operate your mobility vehicle too close to those trasmitters. For example, if you are o a electric mobility vehicle with a resistace level of at least 20 V/m, you should remai at least three feet from a had-held two-way radio ad at least te feet from a mobile two-way radio. Be aware that addig accessories ad/or compoets, or modifyig your mobility vehicle i ay way, may chage its EMI/RFI resistace level ad may make it more susceptible to iterferece from radio wave sources. What should I do if my mobility vehicle moves uexpectedly? If uiteded motio or uiteded brake release occurs, tur off your mobility vehicle (by removig the key) as soo as it is safe to do so. If my mobility vehicle moves uitetioally, where should I report the icidet? Call Pride Customer Care at to report the icidet Victory XL/RevD/Jue03
